Choose a Broan hood by matching its mounting style, width, vent route and duct requirements to your kitchen—not by relying on an unverified “top-rated” label. Broan’s published specifications offer useful examples, but they are not independent comparative test results, and a hood’s maximum blower CFM is not necessarily its installed or HVI-rated airflow.

How to choose a Broan range hood

  1. Choose the mounting style. Decide whether the hood belongs under a cabinet or mounts to a wall as a chimney-style unit. The kitchen layout and cabinet arrangement determine which formats will fit.
  2. Match the width. Compare the hood’s actual dimensions with the cooktop and available cabinetry. A product’s nominal width alone does not confirm that its installation will fit.
  3. Decide how it will vent. An outdoor exhaust route calls for a ducted setup. If that is not available, check whether the exact hood supports recirculation and whether a compatible kit is sold separately.
  4. Check duct size and outlet direction. Use the selected model’s product specifications and installation instructions; do not assume existing ductwork is suitable.
  5. Compare airflow and sound at the relevant speed. Confirm how the airflow figure is measured, and check the speed associated with any sone rating. Maximum open-air blower CFM is not interchangeable with installed or HVI-rated performance.
  6. Review the details that affect daily use. Check the exact model’s lighting, controls, filter type and cleaning requirements, energy certification and warranty on its product page.

Broan’s professional-style range hood category shows that the manufacturer’s products span different widths and airflow and sound groupings. Treat it as a way to explore formats, not as a ranking. Model availability and specifications can change, so verify details on the current product page.

Broan models to consider by installation type

These examples illustrate different installation needs and published specifications; they are not an independently tested ranking or a like-for-like comparison.

Wall-mount example: BWPR302CSSE

Broan-NuTone lists the BWPR302CSSE as a 30-inch stainless-steel chimney hood with 300 maximum blower CFM and 1.5 sones. Its product page describes installation with a 6-inch round duct or ductless recirculation using a separately sold WPRRCK kit. It also lists LED lighting, two-speed control and ENERGY STAR certification. These are manufacturer-listed claims, not independent test findings. Check the model’s instructions and confirm the kit’s compatibility and included parts before ordering. See the BWPR302CSSE specifications.

Under-cabinet, ducted-only example: 403001

Broan lists model 403001 as a 30-inch under-cabinet hood with 210 maximum blower CFM and 6.5 sones. The product page specifies ducted-only venting, so it is not the choice for an installation that requires recirculation. Its mounting style and venting configuration differ from the wall-mount example above. See the 403001 specifications.

Under-cabinet example with HVI and ENERGY STAR listings: GLA1303WW

Broan-NuTone presents the 30-inch GLA1303WW as an under-cabinet model with 350 maximum blower CFM, HVI certification and ENERGY STAR certification. The product page also makes claims about quietness and effectiveness; those are manufacturer claims, not independent comparative findings. Check its current product specifications and installation instructions for venting, duct and sound details before deciding whether it fits your project. See the GLA1303WW specifications.

What size range hood do I need?

Start with the width of the cooking surface and the physical space available. The examples above are all listed as 30-inch models, but that does not make them interchangeable: one is a wall-mount chimney hood, while the others are under-cabinet hoods, and their venting options differ. Compare the exact hood dimensions with the cooktop and cabinetry, then confirm installation clearances in the model’s instructions. The available evidence does not establish one width that suits every kitchen.

How many CFM do I need for a gas range?

Broan-NuTone’s Range Hood FAQs recommend at least 1 CFM of ventilation per 100 BTU for high-output gas ranges or cooktops. This is the manufacturer’s general recommendation, not a building code or a complete sizing calculation. Final selection also depends on the appliance configuration, installation, duct route, local rules and the hood’s tested airflow rating. Check local requirements rather than treating the ratio as proof of code compliance or as a determination of make-up-air needs. Read Broan-NuTone’s Range Hood FAQs.

What does sones mean on a range hood?

Broan defines sones as a measure of sound as perceived by an average listener; a lower sone figure indicates quieter sound by that measure. The manufacturer says sound ratings are typically measured at maximum speed, though some newer models also report normal-speed sound. Check which speed a particular figure refers to before comparing it with another model. Broan’s sound comparisons in its FAQ are explanatory comparisons from the manufacturer, not objective decibel equivalents.

For example, Broan lists 1.5 sones for the BWPR302CSSE and 6.5 sones for the 403001. Those specifications do not establish a controlled head-to-head sound comparison: the hoods serve different installation configurations, and the figures need to be read in the context of each product’s rating conditions. Broan says CFM and sone ratings are HVI certified; verify the exact model sheet and rating conditions before using that statement to compare products.

Can a Broan range hood be ductless?

Some Broan hoods support recirculating installation, but ductless capability is model-specific and may require a separately sold kit. The BWPR302CSSE product page describes ductless recirculation with a separate WPRRCK kit; the 403001 is listed as ducted-only. Confirm the exact hood’s compatibility, required accessories and what the kit includes before purchase. Recirculation should not be assumed to be available just because another Broan model offers it.

What size duct does a range hood need?

Follow the selected hood’s installation instructions and do not reduce existing ductwork below the size specified for that model. Broan’s FAQ says the minimum duct size for most hoods is 3¼ by 10 inches (equivalent to 6-inch round); more powerful hoods may require larger duct, up to 10 inches round. These are general manufacturer guidelines, not a substitute for the selected model’s requirements.

  • Broan recommends metal duct and prefers smooth metal over flexible metal where possible, because ridges can create turbulence and reduce airflow.
  • Broan states: “NEVER use 4" dryer duct or any plastic duct on a range hood installation.”
  • The manufacturer also warns: “When remodeling, changing hoods or cooking equipment types do not reduce the ductwork size to less than the size specified for the range hood.”

Both statements are from Broan-NuTone’s Range Hood FAQs. The selected model’s instructions govern the required duct size and outlet direction.

How to compare Broan airflow specifications

CFM means cubic feet per minute of exhausted airflow, but the label on a product figure matters. “Maximum blower CFM” can refer to open-air blower performance; it should not be treated as the installed or HVI-rated performance of a hood. Broan’s kitchen ventilation catalog explains this distinction, but it is an older catalog, not a current complete product lineup. Confirm the relevant rating on the current model sheet before comparing hoods. View Broan’s kitchen ventilation catalog.

For a construction or remodel decision, compare the models on the same practical points: mounting style, width, vented or recirculating use, duct size and direction, airflow rating and measurement basis, sound rating and speed, filters and cleaning, lighting and controls, certification, warranty, and current price and availability. Product pages establish listed features; they do not by themselves establish which hood performs best in a particular kitchen.
