For a tidier-looking room, a lidded woven design may suit; for a tight footprint, consider a collapsible basket; for a large load, a wheeled hamper may help if there is room to maneuver it. No single format is right for every bedroom.
Start with the room and the laundry routine
Measure the spot where the hamper will live, including the clearance needed to open its lid or pull out a liner. Check the path from the bedroom to the washer, too: handles, wheels, and a full load affect whether the hamper is practical to move. Good Housekeeping recommends checking both exterior dimensions and interior capacity against your household’s laundry volume.
- Available footprint: Decide whether the hamper must fit beside furniture, inside a closet, or in a corner without narrowing a walkway.
- Time between wash days: Choose a capacity that works for your own routine rather than relying on a generic per-person rule.
- Sorting: If you separate colors or fabrics before laundry day, a divided hamper can keep loads apart.
- Transport: Consider whether you will carry a liner, lift the whole hamper, or roll it to the washer.
These checks matter as much as appearance: a hamper that blocks circulation or is awkward to move will be frustrating even if it looks good.
Choose a format that fits your priorities
Lidded woven hamper: concealment and bedroom style
A woven hamper with a lid can hide laundry while looking more like bedroom furnishings than a utility basket. A removable liner makes it easier to carry clothes to the washer and can be cleaned separately, if its care instructions allow. Check the weave and liner for airflow; a lid should conceal clothes without turning the hamper into a sealed container.

Good Housekeeping describes the Pottery Barn Seagrass Handcrafted Divided Hamper as handwoven rattan and seagrass on a metal frame, with two sections, a lid, cut-out handles, and removable liners. The article lists its dimensions as 28 × 13.5 × 27 inches and characterizes it as expensive. These are source-reported product details; verify the current retailer listing before buying. Divided hamper: sort before wash day
Separate sections can reduce sorting later, especially if you routinely split laundry into different loads. The trade-off is a larger overall footprint than a single-compartment design, so measure the full exterior rather than assuming the compartments will fit into a narrow spot.

Good Housekeeping also describes the Simple Houseware Double Laundry Hamper with Lid, which has two sections and removable, machine-washable mesh bags. Its guide says the frame is not especially easy to collapse and explicitly notes that this model was not formally tested by its lab. Treat those details as the guide’s reporting, not as a lab result.
Collapsible basket: save storage space
A collapsible basket makes sense when you need to put the laundry container away between uses or have limited room. Good Housekeeping describes the SAMMART Collapsible Plastic Laundry Basket as a lightweight polypropylene and thermoplastic elastomer design that folds flat; its listed collapsed dimensions are 22.8 × 17.5 × 2.7 inches. The guide also relays one editor’s concern about the durability of the rubber grip section, based on that editor’s ownership experience. It is a space-saving carry basket, not an enclosed, decorative hamper while in use.

Wheeled fabric hamper: move a large load
Wheels can reduce the need to carry a full load, but they need clearance and add to the footprint. Homes & Gardens describes the StorageWorks 160L Laundry Basket with Wheels as having a metal frame, fabric basket, leather-style handles, four rotating casters (two lockable), and five color options. Its 2025 article reports a 160L capacity and suggests it could sit in a bedroom corner. That capacity is specific to this product, not a general recommendation; check current dimensions, materials, and availability before deciding whether it fits your room. Hard plastic: prioritize easy-wipe care
A hard plastic hamper or basket may be easier to wipe down than a woven one. Compare ventilation and the care instructions for any removable parts. The cited sources do not establish that plastic hampers are more durable or hygienic than other materials.

Balance a lid with ventilation and care
A lid hides clothes, but a completely sealed hamper can limit air circulation. Good Housekeeping’s Carolyn Forté, Home Care and Cleaning Lab Executive Director at the Good Housekeeping Institute, says: “Ventilation is important to help keep odors down and a lid is nice on a hamper to hide the dirty clothes.” A breathable material or loose weave can help air circulate; neither is a guarantee against odors.
Damp towels and sweaty gym clothes can contribute to a smelly hamper. Let wet items dry before putting them away, and clean the hamper or washable liner periodically according to its care instructions. Forté distinguishes the two common formats this way: “Hampers hold more, are deeper, and are a place to toss in dirty laundry until you can wash it,” while “Baskets should be easy to carry and store and hampers should be attractive if left out in a room.”

What product testing can—and cannot—tell you
Good Housekeeping says its lab assesses hamper capacity using 7-pound loads for tested models, carries products over a short distance, and considers sorting, aesthetics, airflow, portability, and liners. The 7-pound loads describe that guide’s testing approach, not a universal capacity standard. The guide specifically says the Simple Houseware model was not formally tested, so its features should not be confused with lab findings. Product dimensions and capacities are reported specifications, and retailer details can change.
