The quickest way to check a route
HS2’s location search is the authoritative first check for construction-related access issues along the route. HS2 describes its map this way: “Use our interactive map to find out what’s happening in your area. Search by postcode or location to view current and upcoming works, and find community information linked to the project.” Open the Communities page and select the interactive map or current-works search.

Go to the live Search HS2 construction works in your area page. Enter the road name, village, postcode or a nearby landmark rather than relying on a broad county search. A route may be listed under a settlement, project section or work-item name that differs from the name people use locally.
Search results can be narrowed by status, region, phase and estimated start date. Read the work-item title, location and date shown in each result, then open the full notice. A result that merely appears near your postcode is not enough evidence that your particular access point is closed; the notice must describe the affected stretch or facility.

Step-by-step: checking a road, path or access point
1. Open the official map
- Visit the HS2 Communities page.
- Choose the interactive route map or the current-works search.
- Allow the map or listing to load fully before judging that no works are present. Use the dedicated search page if the map view is difficult to navigate.
2. Search more than one way
Run separate searches for the exact road name, the nearest village or town, your postcode and a recognizable landmark. Construction notices may identify a road by a formal name, a local name, a junction, a bridge, a canal or a nearby compound. Searching only the name of a footpath can miss a notice filed under the parish, road or wider work package.
3. Use the filters, but do not hide relevant results
The current-works listing provides filters for status, region, phase and estimated start date. Begin with all relevant statuses and the broadest sensible date range so that you do not exclude an upcoming closure. Then narrow the list to current work or the appropriate phase once you understand how the site labels the item. Record the work-item name and the date displayed before opening the notice; those details help when you contact HS2 about an ambiguous result.
4. Identify the type of restriction
Look for wording that explicitly mentions a road closure, traffic management, a footpath or Public Right of Way (PRoW) closure, a diversion, a canal or towpath closure, or altered access. The live listing includes these kinds of notices. Do not infer a closure from a generic entry such as “construction works” unless the detailed notice explains how the public route is affected.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches5. Read the complete notice
Confirm all of the following in the opened notice:
- the precise road, path, crossing, towpath or access point;
- whether the restriction is full, partial, intermittent or controlled by traffic management;
- the start and expected finish dates, plus daily times if they are given;
- the direction of any diversion and where it begins and ends;
- whether residents, deliveries, businesses, agricultural users or emergency access are treated differently;
- any map, local-signing instruction or alternative route shown in the notice.
Dates in the search are estimates, and work can be rescheduled. Treat an estimated end date as a planning guide rather than a guarantee that the route will reopen at midnight on that date.
6. Compare the diversion with your actual journey
When a notice offers more than one route or approach, compare the affected segment, restriction type, notice dates and times, diversion direction and the mode you intend to use. A route suitable for a car is not automatically suitable for a person walking, cycling or using a mobility aid. Unless the local notice says otherwise, do not assume that a footpath diversion is step-free, cycle-friendly, wide enough for equipment or open to vehicles.

7. Check again before setting out
Use the latest listing and notice shortly before travel, particularly when the work has an estimated date or involves temporary traffic management. At the location, follow the physical closure signs, barriers and signed diversion even if an older web result suggests that the route should be open. HS2’s Aylesbury notice describes local signs and maps for affected paths; that arrangement is an example for that area, not a universal rule for every HS2 site.
8. Subscribe for continuing changes
For a route you use regularly, subscribe to construction updates for the relevant area. HS2 says: “Sign up for updates about construction in your area. We’ll tell you what we’re building, when we’re working and what we’re doing to reduce disruption.” Subscriptions are useful for planned changes, but they do not replace checking the route-specific notice on the day.

If the listing does not say whether your access remains open, contact the HS2 Helpdesk using the current details printed on the latest HS2 notice or contact page. An HS2/EKFB notice for Aylesbury lists 08081 434 434 and [email protected]; verify those details against the most recent notice before relying on them. Give the adviser the work-item name, exact route, postcode or coordinates, intended travel date and the wording that is unclear.
What each kind of notice means
| Notice wording | What it may mean for you | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Road closure | The named stretch is closed to general traffic for the stated period. | Exact limits, start and end times, exemptions and signed vehicle diversion. |
| Traffic management | Traffic may be controlled with signals, stop/go arrangements, lane restrictions, temporary lights or short holds rather than a complete closure. | Whether delays are expected, whether both directions are affected and whether access is maintained at particular times. |
| Footpath or PRoW closure | Public access on the identified path is prohibited for the notice period, normally with a local diversion where one is provided. | Path endpoints, diversion route, surface, gates, steps, dates and whether the alternative suits your mode of travel. |
| Canal or towpath closure | The towpath or waterside route may be unavailable even when nearby roads remain open. | Whether the restriction applies to the towpath, the waterway, or both, and the signed alternative. |
| Altered access | Access may remain possible but through a different entrance, controlled point, temporary route or revised arrangement. | Which users are covered, opening times, required instructions and whether deliveries or visitors need a separate approach. |
These labels describe the type of control, not its severity for every traveller. A short road closure can create a long detour, while traffic management can cause substantial delay at peak times. The notice’s map and wording take precedence over assumptions based on the label.
Checking by how you travel
Driving or making a delivery
Start with the road name and every junction that forms your normal approach. A notice may close only one section, leaving the road open from another direction. Check whether the diversion is signed for your vehicle type and whether the notice states that resident, business or delivery access is retained. If the document gives working hours rather than a continuous closure, note the exact daily window; an access route can be available in the evening but blocked during active construction.

Do not move barriers or enter a signed closure to reach a property, loading point or field. If you require access that the notice does not explain, ask the Helpdesk for a location-specific instruction and allow time for an alternative arrangement.

Walking
For a footpath or PRoW, identify both ends of the affected section and trace the complete diversion rather than checking only the nearest road crossing. Read any map in the notice and follow signs at the closure. A diversion can use roads, temporary paths or another public route; its length, surface and gradients are local details that must come from the notice or on-site signs.
Cycling
Check whether the notice describes the alternative as a cycle route or merely a pedestrian footpath. A signed walking diversion may include narrow gates, steps or surfaces unsuitable for a bicycle. If cycling is not addressed, ask the Helpdesk before committing to the route and plan a legal alternative that remains open.
Mobility aids, pushchairs and access needs
Do not assume that a diversion accommodates wheelchairs, mobility scooters, pushchairs or assistance equipment. Look for information about surfaces, gradients, barriers, width and step-free access. If those details are absent, treat accessibility as unconfirmed and seek clarification from HS2 or inspect the route in advance when safe to do so. Never bypass a barrier because the alternative appears difficult.
How to handle dates, status and changing information
The current-works search is a live listing. A work item can move from upcoming to current, be rescheduled or disappear after completion. Estimated start dates and finish dates are not a promise of continuous closure or reopening. Save the notice link or work-item name, then repeat the search before each important journey.

Check whether the notice uses a single date, a date range or recurring daily periods. If a date has passed but signs remain, follow the signs and seek confirmation rather than assuming the closure is unlawful or outdated. Conversely, a notice with a future date does not mean the route is open before that date if temporary traffic management has already been installed.
When a search result and a physical sign appear to conflict, the safe course is to obey the on-site control and ask HS2 to reconcile the information. Tell the adviser exactly what the sign says, where it is located and when you observed it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Aylesbury example: use local evidence, not a universal assumption
An HS2/EKFB notice dated April 2025 concerns Public Rights of Way closures in Aylesbury. It states: “The affected footpaths have closure notices and, where possible, signposted local diversions in place around the construction works until the permanent realignments are completed by mid 2026.” Read that sentence as an Aylesbury-specific example tied to that notice and date. It does not establish that every HS2 footpath has a diversion, that every diversion is accessible to every user, or that the mid-2026 timeline applies elsewhere.
The practical lesson is to look for three separate pieces of information in your own notice: a formal closure notice at the route, a described or mapped diversion, and the expected period before the permanent arrangement is available. If one of those is missing, contact HS2 rather than filling the gap with the Aylesbury example.
If your search returns nothing
The route may be listed under another name
Repeat the search with the parish, village, nearest junction, bridge, canal, landmark and postcode. Try the formal road name as well as the name used by residents. Search results are organised around work items, so the affected path may be grouped with a larger construction package.

The item may not be current yet
Remove the current-only filter and check upcoming works and estimated start dates. A notice can be published before the restriction begins. Conversely, a completed item may no longer appear in the current view, so use the notice details you saved if you are checking a recently ended closure.
The notice may describe construction without naming access
Open nearby results and look for the specific terms road closure, traffic management, footpath, PRoW, towpath, diversion or altered access. If none appears, the listing does not answer the access question. Ask the Helpdesk with the precise location and intended travel date.
The map and the site may disagree
Give priority to barriers, signs and marshals at the location while you seek confirmation. Web content can lag a field change, and estimated dates can move. Photographing the sign for your own reference can help you describe the discrepancy accurately, but do not enter a closed area to investigate.
Do not confuse public-route disruption with property impact
HS2’s page Is your property affected by HS2? addresses property impact and related guidance. That is a different question from whether a particular public road, footpath or towpath is open today. A property may be outside a construction boundary while its usual road is under traffic management, and a public path may be closed even when no private property is being acquired.
Use the current-works notice for travel and access decisions. Use property guidance when you need to understand land, building or compensation issues. If both issues apply, check both sources and explain to the Helpdesk that you need an answer about the public route as well as the property.
A printable check before you travel
- Have you searched the exact road, path, postcode and nearby place name?
- Did you check current and upcoming results, not just one filter setting?
- Does the notice name your exact segment, junction, crossing or access?
- What are the restriction type, dates, daily times and current status?
- Is access fully closed, partly restricted, controlled or merely diverted?
- Does the alternative route suit your vehicle, bicycle, mobility aid or walking needs?
- Have you checked the latest map, notice and on-site signs shortly before departure?
- Do you know where the diversion begins and ends?
- If information conflicts or is incomplete, have you recorded the work-item name and contacted HS2?
This process answers the practical questions “Is HS2 affecting my road?”, “Is this footpath closed?”, “Is there a diversion?” and “How do I check access near HS2 works?” without relying on an old social-media post or an assumption based on a nearby construction site.
