To check whether a home is in an aircraft noise zone, identify every nearby airport, search the FAA’s Noise Contour (NQ) Explorer for available contour data, and then obtain the airport’s current Part 150 Noise Exposure Map (NEM). Compare the parcel with the map’s DNL/Ldn contours, noting the study date and whether the drawing shows existing or forecast conditions. Treat the online map as a screening tool, not a legal parcel determination.
For a purchase, construction project or renovation, ask the airport operator and the local planning or zoning office to confirm whether the address is inside a locally adopted airport-noise overlay, notice area or other mapped district. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) says it does not determine whether a specific property lies within a contour, and its advisory guidance warns that plotting a contour near a property line can be imprecise.

What an aircraft noise zone map actually shows
An airport noise map is a scaled map of modeled community exposure. It places lines called contours around an airport to show areas with similar long-term aircraft-noise levels, then displays surrounding land uses and geographic features. A Part 150 Noise Exposure Map normally presents both existing conditions and a five-year planning forecast, so the same airport may have separate lines or map sheets for each scenario.

It is a calculated exposure measure for a defined set of aircraft operations and a defined study period. It is not a sound-meter reading at a home, and it cannot tell you how loud one takeoff, landing or overflight will sound indoors or outdoors at a particular moment.

Part 150 map specifications call for contours at 65, 70 and 75 dB Ldn. The accompanying land-use map should be detailed enough to identify streets, airport boundaries, flight tracks and other geographic references. Under the federal compatibility table, residential uses are normally compatible below 65 dB and not normally compatible at 65–70 dB and above, subject to the table’s qualifications and local circumstances.
Find the correct airport and the latest available map
Search FAA NQ Explorer first
Open the FAA’s NQ Explorer and search by airport. The tool can display the latest airport contours when data are available, but coverage is not universal. Search every airport that could affect the address; a property may be influenced by more than one facility, especially near a metropolitan area or a general-aviation airport.
Record the airport name, the map or data date, the contour levels shown and whether the viewer labels the result as existing, forecast or another scenario. Do not assume that a blank result means the property has no aircraft noise. It may mean that the airport has no contour data in the viewer.
Locate the underlying Part 150 records
Use the FAA Airport Noise resources and its state-by-state Part 150 program information to locate the airport’s official Noise Exposure Map, Noise Compatibility Program and supporting study documents. Then check the airport operator’s own website or public-records portal. Airport operators often publish the adopted map, technical appendices, public-meeting materials and later updates; the Port Authority, for example, makes Part 150 study documents available for its airports.

Prefer the official PDF or map layer that identifies the study sponsor and date. A real-estate listing, sound-map screenshot or third-party website may omit the scenario, scale, legend or later revision that determines what you are seeing.
How to check an address step by step
- Identify all potentially relevant airports. Start with the property address, then list airports within the area where flight paths or published contours could reach it. Search each airport separately in NQ Explorer and in the airport operator’s records.
- Download or open the official map. Obtain the current Part 150 NEM, the Noise Compatibility Program and any later study or amendment. Keep the document title and publication date with your property file.
- Read the legend before looking at the house. Confirm that the lines are DNL/Ldn contours, note the 65, 70 and 75 dB levels, and identify whether the sheet depicts existing operations or a five-year forecast. Check the map scale, north arrow, airport boundary and flight-track references.
- Orient the parcel using fixed references. Find the home’s street, nearby roads, rivers, rail lines, municipal boundaries or other landmarks shown on the map. Use the parcel address and the visible street pattern rather than estimating from the airport runway alone.
- Compare the lot with the contour line. Determine whether the parcel appears outside a contour, between two contours or crossed by one. Save a copy of the map or PDF page you used and note the exact scenario; do not treat a line drawn close to a property boundary as a precise survey.
- Request an official parcel-level interpretation. Contact the airport operator and the local planning or zoning agency. Ask whether the address is inside a locally adopted airport-noise overlay, airport zoning district, notice area or other mapped zone, and request the current map layer or written interpretation.
- Use FAA contact routing if necessary. If you cannot identify the airport or the right office, FAA guidance allows a user to enter the address where the noise concern occurred to find contact information for nearby airports.
How to read the contour levels
| Contour or map item | What it represents | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Below 65 dB Ldn | Residential uses are listed as normally compatible in the federal land-use table, subject to its qualifications. | Use this as a federal planning reference, then verify local rules and the map’s date. |
| 65 dB Ldn | The federal residential land-use compatibility guideline is DNL 65 dBA. | Check whether the parcel is near or inside this contour and ask the local authority how it is applied. |
| 70 dB Ldn | A higher modeled exposure contour included in the Part 150 map specification. | Look for the airport’s land-use designations and any locally adopted restrictions or notices. |
| 75 dB Ldn | The highest standard contour required in the federal NEM specification. | Confirm the parcel against the official map and local overlay; do not infer legal status from the line alone. |
| Existing-condition map | Modeled exposure for the operations represented by the study’s existing scenario. | Use it to understand the conditions modeled for the study date. |
| Five-year forecast map | Modeled exposure for the study’s five-year planning forecast. | Read the assumptions and date. A forecast describes a planning scenario, not a guarantee of future operations. |
The 65 dBA guideline is not a nationwide zoning boundary. The federal government does not regulate land use through that guideline; state and local jurisdictions retain land-use authority and may adopt different standards, overlays or disclosure areas.
Why a contour cannot settle the question for one lot
Contours are calculated over an area and then drawn on a geographic base map. They are not property surveys. FAA Advisory Circular AC 150/5020-1 states: “The FAA is not involved in any way in determining the relative locations of specific properties with regard to the depicted noise contours.” The circular assigns detailed overlaying of contours onto property maps to the airport operator and/or relevant public and planning agencies.

That limitation matters most when a contour appears to run along a side or rear lot line. Differences in map scale, parcel data, coordinate systems and line thickness can move the apparent boundary by enough to change the result for a particular address. Ask the airport operator or local planning agency to make the parcel-level determination rather than measuring the line yourself.

Federal guidance, local zoning and property disclosures are different
A federal NEM is a planning record. A city or county may use it, modify it or create a separate airport overlay, avigation-easement area, notice district or building requirement. Another jurisdiction may use a different noise metric, a different threshold or no mapped district at all. A property can therefore be outside a federal contour yet still be subject to a local notice requirement, or appear near a contour without being legally restricted by it.
For a transaction or permit, ask the local planning or zoning office specifically:
- Whether the parcel is in an airport-noise overlay, airport-influence area, notice area or zoning district.
- Which map version and date the office uses for parcel determinations.
- Whether the property file contains an airport-noise notice, disclosure, easement or recorded restriction.
- Whether a planned addition, new dwelling or change of use requires special review.
Request the answer in writing when the issue affects a purchase contract, design decision or permit. Keep the official response with the map you reviewed because maps and local ordinances can be amended.

| Comparison point | Questions to ask | Why it changes the result |
|---|---|---|
| Airport | Are the maps for the same airport and runway system? | Different airports can produce overlapping but unrelated contours. |
| Study date | Which map was published or adopted later? | Operations, runways and surrounding development may change between studies. |
| Scenario | Does the sheet show existing conditions or a forecast? | A forecast is a planning case, not a measurement of current operations. |
| Metric and level | Are both maps using DNL/Ldn and the same contour level? | A 65 dB line cannot be compared directly with a 70 or 75 dB line. |
| Scale and detail | Does one map show parcel lines and streets more precisely? | A broad regional image may make a boundary look farther from a lot than a detailed sheet does. |
| Local adoption | Has a city or county adopted the contour or a separate overlay? | A locally enforceable district may not match the federal NEM outline. |
What to do when the map is hard to find or unclear
The airport does not appear in NQ Explorer
Check the FAA Airport Noise resources and the airport operator’s planning, environmental or public-records pages. Ask the operator for its current NEM and Noise Compatibility Program. If the address is near several airports, contact each operator rather than assuming the nearest runway is the only source.
The map is available but has no parcel boundaries
Use roads and landmarks to orient the address, then send the operator or planning office the parcel number and a current assessor or survey map. Ask that office to overlay the official contour on its parcel data. Do not create your own legal boundary by tracing a thick line from a PDF.
Two official maps show different lines
Write down each map’s airport, date, scenario, metric and contour level. A later map may replace an older one, while an existing-condition sheet and a forecast sheet can both be valid for their stated purposes. Ask the operator which document is current for property inquiries and ask the local agency which layer controls its decisions.
The address is just outside a contour
Request a parcel-level confirmation because the FAA warns that contour plotting can be imprecise near property lines. Also review the local notice or overlay district, which may be broader than the federal contour.

The address is inside a contour but the home seems quiet
That is not necessarily a contradiction. The contour represents modeled long-term exposure, not the sound of every event or a guarantee that noise will be equally noticeable at all times. Visit the property at different times, listen outdoors and indoors, and ask the airport and local officials about current operations and planned changes.
Practical diligence before buying, building or remodeling
Before making an offer
- Save the current NQ Explorer result and the complete official NEM page showing the address context.
- Obtain the airport operator’s written parcel interpretation if the home is near a contour.
- Ask the local planning or zoning office about overlays, notices, easements and disclosure rules.
- Visit more than once, including times when aircraft activity is likely to differ.
Before designing or permitting work
Give the architect, builder or permit consultant the map date, scenario and any local written determination. Confirm with the permitting authority whether the proposed work or change of use triggers airport-noise review. Do not assume that a federal compatibility category by itself approves a project or substitutes for local code and zoning review.
Keep the records together
Retain the map PDF, legend, study date, correspondence and local ordinance or map layer used for the decision. If the property is sold or the project changes, those records show which conditions and documents were evaluated.
Quick Recap
Key points to remember
- FAA NQ Explorer may show the latest contours for an airport, but availability varies.
- Part 150 NEMs show modeled existing and forecast exposure and surrounding land uses; always read the date and scenario.
- The federal NEM framework uses 65, 70 and 75 dB Ldn contours, while DNL 65 dBA is a federal residential compatibility guideline.
- Federal guidance does not determine local zoning, a property’s legal status or whether a disclosure is required.
- For a specific home, the airport operator and local planning agency are the authorities to ask for parcel-level confirmation.
