Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Do not approve a flame-retardant coating from a generic compatibility chart or a single adhesion result. Compatibility depends on the exact coating, substrate, existing finish, preparation, primer, cure conditions and service environment. Start with the coating manufacturer’s current technical data sheet and written approval for the substrate and existing system. Then verify adhesion with a method suited to the substrate, and separately confirm that fire-test reports or listings cover the same—or a technically representative—assembly and intended use.
The sequence below separates four questions that are often incorrectly treated as one: will the coating bond, will the layers remain compatible, will the applied assembly deliver the claimed fire performance, and will the authority having jurisdiction accept the evidence?

What compatibility actually means
A coating can appear sound while failing one of the other compatibility tests. Evaluate these questions independently:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall- Substrate compatibility: Can the coating chemically and mechanically adhere to the actual material, including its porosity, alkalinity, corrosion state, moisture and surface profile?
- Existing-system compatibility: If paint, primer, sealant or another coating remains in place, will the new product bond to that layer, and is that older layer itself firmly attached?
- Application compatibility: Can the specified preparation, temperature, humidity, film build, curing and recoat schedule be achieved on the project?
- Fire-performance compatibility: Does the tested or listed assembly represent the same substrate, support, layer sequence, thickness and end use?
Passing one question does not answer the others. For example, a pull-off test can show that a coating is attached to concrete, but it does not prove that the assembly has the required flame-spread classification. A fire-test report can cover a coating on one support without authorizing its use on a different substrate.

Build an accurate record of the surface before selecting a product
Identify the substrate
Record the material at every treatment area: wood, concrete, masonry, gypsum board, steel or another construction material. Do not rely on architectural labels alone. A wall may contain several substrates, repairs or concealed transitions, and a coating approved for one may not be approved for the others.
Describe the existing coating stack
Document whether the surface is bare, primed, painted, sealed or previously treated with a fire-retardant product. Record product names and batch information when available. Note the order of layers, because a new primer or tie coat can change the system that was originally tested.
Record condition and exposure
Inspect for moisture, staining, chalking, peeling, blistering, corrosion, efflorescence, dust, oil, release agents, biological growth and damaged areas. Note whether the surface is indoors, outdoors, below grade, exposed to wash-down, subject to condensation, or likely to experience temperature cycling or abrasion. The inspection record should identify where each condition occurs rather than describing the whole project with one general label.

Resolve unknowns before testing
If the existing coating is unidentified, obtain a sample or involve a coatings professional before assuming it is compatible. Unknown layers can contain contaminants or curing agents that interfere with adhesion. Do not conceal weak areas under a new coating; repair or remove them according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Use the current product documents as the first approval gate
Obtain the current technical data sheet, safety information and written manufacturer guidance for the exact product and intended use. A generic chart, an old submittal or an instruction for a similar product is not a substitute for written approval.

| Document question | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Approved substrates | The document names the actual substrate, not merely a broad category such as “masonry” or “metal.” |
| Existing coatings | Permitted primers, paints, sealers and fire-retardant layers are identified, with any restrictions on unknown or aged coatings. |
| Preparation | Cleaning, removal of unsound material, profile, repairs, abrasive methods and masking requirements are stated. |
| Application environment | Substrate and air temperature, humidity, ventilation, dew-point or condensation controls and other limits are specified. |
| Cure and recoat schedule | Minimum cure, drying and recoat conditions are provided for the actual product and environment. |
| Primers, tie coats and topcoats | Required or permitted companion products are named, including approved brands or product families where the manufacturer requires them. |
| Fire evidence | Referenced test reports, listings, labels, thickness limits, support conditions and use limitations are identified. |
For example, the technical sheet for MONOKOTE Z-146PC states that substrates must be free of substances that impair adhesion and must be compatible with Portland cement materials. It also specifies a minimum substrate-temperature condition before application. Those are product-specific instructions; they must not be transferred to another coating without that manufacturer’s approval.
Prepare and inspect the surface before a compatibility test
Preparation is part of compatibility, not a cosmetic step performed after the decision. Follow the product sheet, and document the work in a way that another party can audit.
- Remove dirt, oil, loose particles, efflorescence, chalk and other substances identified by the manufacturer as adhesion impediments.
- Remove or repair peeling, blistered, delaminated or corroded areas. A new coating cannot make an unsound underlying layer sound.
- Check moisture and condensation risk. Record the measurement method and location when the product requires a moisture limit or a dry surface.
- Confirm that repairs, patching compounds and sealants are approved beneath the coating and have reached the required cure state.
- Create a representative test area that includes transitions, repairs, old coating and the most difficult exposure—not only a clean, easy section.
- Mark areas that will receive different primers, film builds or topcoats so results can be traced to a specific assembly.
Do not invent acceptance limits for cleanliness, moisture or profile. Use the manufacturer’s stated limits or obtain written criteria from the specifier.
Use ASTM D5064-26 only for the question it addresses
ASTM D5064-26 is a field practice for assessing whether a maintenance coating is compatible with an existing coating system. It can help evaluate a new coating over an in-place coating, but its scope is narrower than many project teams assume.
What a patch evaluation can tell you
When performed according to the practice and the coating manufacturer’s instructions, a representative patch evaluation can reveal visible incompatibility such as wrinkling, lifting, softening, bleeding, loss of cure or other reaction between the new and existing layers. Keep a record of the products, surface preparation, environmental conditions, application method, film build and observation intervals.

What it cannot tell you
- It does not establish that the existing coating is soundly attached to the substrate.
- It does not establish compatibility with the substrate itself or with corrosion products beneath the existing coating.
- It does not create universal pass-fail adhesion criteria.
- It does not demonstrate fire-code acceptance or reproduce a fire-performance listing.
The user or specifier must establish pass-fail criteria with input from the coating manufacturer. A patch that looks acceptable is evidence about that tested location and procedure; it is not permission to skip substrate inspection or system-level fire verification.
Choose an adhesion method suited to the substrate
Concrete: ASTM D7234-22
ASTM D7234-22 describes portable pull-off testing for coatings on concrete and the evaluation and reporting of pull-off strength and failure mode. The useful result is not just a number. Record the instrument, loading fixture, test location, coating age and cure state, preparation of the test area, and the plane where failure occurred.
A failure in the concrete, at the coating-to-concrete interface, within the coating, or between existing and new layers has different implications. Discuss the result with the manufacturer and specifier rather than applying a universal strength threshold. Follow the product’s minimum cure-time guidance before testing; testing too early can measure incomplete cure rather than service adhesion.
Other rigid substrates: ASTM D4541
ASTM D7234 points to ASTM D4541 for pull-off testing of coatings on other rigid substrates. Steel, masonry, gypsum-based boards and composite panels can respond differently to the same fixture and loading rate. Agree in advance on the instrument, dolly or fixture, test locations, conditioning and reporting format.
Make the result traceable
| Record | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Substrate and layer sequence | Shows what the test actually represents. |
| Product batch and application date | Links the result to a specific material and cure history. |
| Environmental conditions | Explains differences caused by temperature, humidity or condensation. |
| Instrument and fixture | Different equipment and fixtures can affect the measured result. |
| Cure time at testing | Early testing can understate the final bond. |
| Failure plane and photographs | Shows whether failure occurred in the coating, interface or substrate. |
| Agreed acceptance criterion | Prevents a result from being declared acceptable without a defined basis. |
Do not use an adhesion tester as a proxy for fire performance, chemical resistance or long-term durability.

Verify fire-performance evidence separately from adhesion
Ask for the complete test report, listing or label and its application limitations. Confirm all of the following:
- The fire-test standard and edition used.
- The substrate and support represented by the specimen.
- The primer, coating, topcoat, thickness and layer order.
- The conditioning and curing procedure.
- The intended occupancy, location or end-use limitation, if any.
- The geographic jurisdiction and code edition under which the evidence will be accepted.
Understand ASTM E84-26a’s boundary
ASTM E84-26a compares surface flame spread and smoke density under specified laboratory conditions. It does not, by itself, assess the complete risk of a real fire. The specimen’s support can affect the outcome, so a result obtained on a materially different substrate or support may not answer the question for your assembly.
Ask the manufacturer to identify whether the report covers the actual substrate or a technically representative one, and what differences are permitted. If the report does not state that clearly, obtain a written interpretation from the manufacturer, qualified testing professional or specifier.
Confirm acceptance with the authority having jurisdiction
A test result is not automatically a code approval. The authority having jurisdiction, building official or qualified fire-protection specifier may require a particular listing, label, thickness, installation method or documentation package. Resolve that requirement before application, not after the coating is installed.

A public NFPA comment response reproduces NFPA 101 language stating that a fire-retardant coating should not be overcoated unless the coating and overcoat have been tested as a system for the intended application. Because that document is a comment response rather than the adopted primary code, verify the exact wording and requirement in the code edition enforced at the project location.
Before approving an overcoat, obtain documentation showing the complete sequence: substrate, preparation, primer, fire-retardant layer, overcoat, thickness and support. Do not rely on a statement that each product is individually fire rated.
Compare candidate systems on the same decision axes
When more than one system remains possible, compare them using a common record rather than selecting the product with the broadest marketing claim.
| Decision axis | Evidence to compare |
|---|---|
| Substrate fit | Written approval for each actual material and condition. |
| Existing-finish compatibility | Approved in-place coatings, patch-evaluation plan and removal requirements. |
| Preparation burden | Cleaning, profiling, repair and access requirements. |
| Environmental limits | Temperature, humidity, condensation and ventilation controls. |
| Cure schedule | Time before recoating, handling, occupancy or adhesion testing. |
| Adhesion verification | Applicable method, fixture, failure-mode reporting and agreed criterion. |
| Fire evidence | Test standard, specimen support, substrate, thickness and layer sequence. |
| Listing and jurisdiction | Whether the authority having jurisdiction accepts the report or listing. |
| Service durability | Moisture, abrasion, chemicals, impact and maintenance exposure. |
| Overcoat status | Whether every primer and topcoat is included in system testing. |
There is no universal adhesion number or generic compatibility rule that substitutes for these project-specific decisions.
Recognize common failure modes and correct them
| Observed problem | Likely explanation | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Wrinkling, lifting or softening in a patch | Chemical incompatibility, trapped solvent or an unsuitable existing layer. | Stop the trial, document conditions, contact the manufacturer and remove or isolate the incompatible layer as directed. |
| Good patch appearance but poor pull-off | The old coating is weakly attached, the substrate is contaminated or cure was incomplete. | Identify the failure plane, inspect adjacent areas and correct the underlying condition before retesting. |
| Variable adhesion across one wall | Different substrates, repairs, moisture levels or coating histories are present. | Divide the work into documented assemblies and test each representative condition. |
| Fire report names a different support | The tested specimen may not represent the installed construction. | Obtain a manufacturer equivalency statement or project-specific evaluation; seek authority acceptance before proceeding. |
| Topcoat is proposed after fire approval | The added layer changes the tested system. | Use only a topcoat covered by system testing or obtain new approval for the complete assembly. |
| Adhesion number is reported without context | Method, fixture, cure state or failure mode is missing. | Repeat or supplement the report with the full test record and agreed criterion. |
| Surface remains damp or contaminated | Preparation or environmental controls were not achieved. | Correct the source, allow the substrate to reach the specified condition and re-inspect before coating. |
Use a staged approval workflow
- Define the assembly. List every substrate, existing layer, proposed primer, fire-retardant coating and topcoat.
- Collect current documents. Obtain the technical data sheet, written substrate approval, preparation instructions, fire reports or listings and jurisdictional requirements.
- Inspect and map conditions. Record moisture, contamination, corrosion, chalking, damage, repairs and transitions by location.
- Prepare a representative area. Use the specified cleaning and repair process, and include the most difficult real conditions.
- Run a compatibility patch evaluation when an existing coating remains. Follow ASTM D5064-26 and the manufacturer’s instructions, and establish criteria before judging the result.
- Apply the approved system. Control environmental conditions, film build, cure and recoat intervals as documented.
- Perform substrate-appropriate adhesion testing. Use ASTM D7234-22 on concrete or ASTM D4541 where applicable to other rigid substrates, with full failure-mode reporting.
- Check the fire evidence. Confirm that the report or listing covers the substrate, support, layer sequence, thickness and intended use.
- Obtain final acceptance. Submit the complete record to the specifier and authority having jurisdiction before production application or closeout.
Assemble a closeout record that can be defended
Keep the following together in the project file:
- Substrate maps, photographs and condition reports.
- Product names, batch numbers and current technical data sheets.
- Written manufacturer approvals and responses to project-specific questions.
- Preparation records, environmental logs and application measurements.
- Patch-evaluation locations, observations and agreed criteria.
- Adhesion reports with instrument, fixture, cure time, result and failure plane.
- Fire-test reports, listings, labels and stated limitations.
- Evidence that primers and overcoats were included in system testing.
- Specifier and authority-approval correspondence.
This documentation distinguishes a coating that was merely applied from an assembly whose compatibility and fire-performance claims are traceable to the installed conditions.
Bottom line: approve the assembly, not just the product
A flame-retardant coating is compatible only when the exact product, substrate, existing layers, preparation, application conditions and service environment are addressed together. Use ASTM D5064-26 for the limited question of maintenance-coating compatibility, ASTM D7234-22 or ASTM D4541 for substrate-appropriate pull-off evaluation, and ASTM E84-26a evidence only within its defined laboratory scope. Require system-level documentation for primers and overcoats, and obtain acceptance from the applicable authority before relying on the coating for code compliance.
