How to Check Traffic Diversions and Road Closures During Bridge Construction

Check the bridge project page for planned detours, then verify current closures with the local official 511 service or traffic map. Match notices to your direction, ramps, and travel time.

Check two official sources before you travel: the transportation agency’s bridge-project page for planned construction stages and detours, and the local 511 service or official traffic map for current closures and conditions. Match the notice to your trip’s date, time, direction, ramps, and route, then check again close to departure because construction schedules can change.

Start with the agency responsible for the bridge

The right source depends on who manages the road. Search the bridge name, route number, or nearby town together with the state or local transportation agency. The examples below are from U.S. state agencies; elsewhere, use the road authority responsible for that route. Without a bridge or location, it is not possible to identify the correct 511 service or detour.

Look for the agency’s official project page rather than relying only on a general search result or an undated notice. Project pages are designed to describe construction stages and planned traffic changes for a particular bridge or corridor. A search result may point to a news story or an older advisory, so open the agency page and confirm that the page and the notice concern the bridge and route you intend to use.

If you are unsure which agency is responsible, start with the bridge name or road number and nearby town, then look for a state or local transportation department result. A road authority may manage the bridge while another agency provides a general traffic map; in that case, use the project page for the bridge-specific plan and the official traffic service covering the route for current conditions. Agency names and service features vary, so do not assume the same 511 website or map applies everywhere.

Use the project page for planned detours and construction stages

On the project page, look for dated advisories and check the details that determine whether a notice applies to your trip:

  • Closure dates and hours, including whether the work is overnight or recurring.
  • Travel direction and the specific bridge approach, lane, or ramp affected.
  • Lane shifts, traffic patterns, and the marked detour route.
  • Alternate access routes and project contact or alert options.

Read the project description and the newest traffic notice together. A page may describe a longer-lived construction stage, while a separate advisory gives the dates and hours for one closure within that stage. A project title alone does not tell you whether every lane, direction, or ramp is affected. Look for a written description or map that identifies the actual movement being changed.

For example, the Connecticut Department of Transportation’s Dutch Point Viaduct project page describes staged traffic patterns and a ramp closure with alternate access routes. Its Gold Star Memorial Bridge page illustrates how a project can publish separate traffic-pattern notices. PennDOT’s I-81 Susquehanna Bridges project page includes seasonal updates, traffic-shift information, and maps.

When a detour map is provided, use it to trace the route from the point where you would normally approach the bridge to the point where you rejoin your intended route. Check the written notice against the map: both should refer to the same date or work phase and the same direction or ramp. If they appear inconsistent, do not assume one is current. Check the publication dates and seek clarification from the agency if the latest notice does not resolve the difference.

Check 511 or the official traffic map for current conditions

A project notice and a live traffic map answer different questions. The project page describes planned work and traffic arrangements; the traffic service can show current closures, road work, incidents, speeds, or detours when those features are available. Check both rather than assuming a planned schedule tells you what is happening on the road right now.

Use the road agency’s official 511 service or traffic map for the area. In Wisconsin, the Department of Transportation says its 511 traveler map shows closures and road work. Indiana’s Department of Transportation points travelers to its CARS map for speeds, accidents, closures, and detours where available. Features differ by jurisdiction, so check the map’s legend and available filters instead of expecting every service to show the same information.

Look at the map around the bridge and along the route you would use to reach it, not only at a single point on the bridge. If the service lets you filter or select road-work and closure information, use its legend to understand what each symbol or alert represents. A map can provide a quick current-condition check, but it may not explain a project phase or the alternate access route in as much detail as the project page. If a map symbol is unclear, return to the project notice or contact the road agency.

Follow this check before each trip

  1. Find the project page. Search the bridge name, road number, or nearby town with the responsible transportation agency. Confirm that the page refers to the bridge and route you plan to use. If the route crosses several agency boundaries, check which agency’s page covers the bridge itself and which official traffic service covers the approach roads.
  2. Read the newest dated notice. Check its publication date and the date and hours of the work. A general construction-stage description may remain relevant for weeks, while a separate notice may cover a specific closure. Do not treat an undated page or old announcement as proof that the same arrangement applies today.
  3. Match the notice to your exact movement. Verify direction, ramps, bridge approaches, lanes, and detour. Do not assume a closure in one direction closes the other direction too. If you use a particular entrance or exit ramp, confirm whether that ramp is named or shown as affected rather than relying on a general statement that the bridge has work.
  4. Check 511 or the official map. Look for current road work, closures, incidents, and detours on your route. Use speeds or cameras if the agency provides them. Check that the map covers the right road and area, and read the map key rather than guessing what an icon means.
  5. Recheck close to departure. Work and weather can change schedules. WisDOT, for example, notes in its regional updates that work and impacts are weather-dependent and subject to change. A prior check is useful for planning, but it should not substitute for a current check before setting out.
  6. Resolve unclear instructions with the agency. Use the project contact, customer-service channel, or project email updates where offered. If the detour notice does not make clear whether your ramp or direction is affected, ask before setting out. When asking, identify the bridge, route, direction, ramp or approach, and your travel date and time so the agency can address the specific movement you need.

This sequence is useful whether you are asking “is the bridge closed today?” or planning around a longer construction phase. The project page helps establish what the agency plans to do; the current traffic map helps check what is reported now. The key is to compare both against your own route and travel time rather than treating either source as a complete answer by itself.

Use alerts and cameras as extra verification

Some agencies offer project email notices, traffic cameras, speed maps, or detour videos. These can help you verify the current arrangement, but they complement rather than replace the dated project notice and traffic map. CTDOT’s Dutch Point page offers project updates and links to live traffic resources; the Gold Star Memorial Bridge page includes a speed map, live camera feeds, and detour videos. INDOT also points travelers to project information and customer-service channels.

Use alerts as a way to keep up with changes, not as a reason to skip checking the date and details of the latest notice. If you receive an email about a traffic shift, make sure it applies to your bridge, direction, and trip date. A camera can offer a view of a particular location, and a speed map can show information where the agency provides it, but neither should be assumed to explain every ramp closure or planned detour. Check the official written notice for the construction arrangement and use the available live resources to verify current conditions.

MassDOT’s I-495 Andover-Lawrence bridge replacements page describes recurring web and email updates about progress, detours, and road conditions. Availability and alert options vary by project. What to do when sources seem to conflict

  • A project page shows work, but the map looks clear: The project page may describe a scheduled or longer-lived stage, while the map reflects conditions at the time you checked. Review the notice’s dates and hours, then check the map again near departure. The two sources may be describing different time frames, so compare the specific work window rather than treating the difference as proof that one is wrong.
  • The map shows a closure not mentioned on the project page: Treat the current official traffic alert as relevant to immediate travel and check for an incident or newer notice. Contact the agency if it is unclear whether the closure is part of the bridge work. A project page focused on planned construction may not describe every current road condition shown by the traffic service.
  • A notice names a bridge but not your ramp or direction: Do not infer that all approaches are affected. Look for a traffic-pattern map or a separate direction-specific notice; contact the project team if the information remains ambiguous. If you cannot establish whether your movement is affected, do not rely on a broad bridge reference as a definitive answer.
  • The detour map and written notice appear different: Check that both are current and refer to the same phase of work. Use the latest dated agency notice and seek clarification rather than following an older map. If the map itself lacks a date or phase label, ask the project contact which route applies to your travel date and direction.

In each case, compare authority, timeliness, route detail, and verification options. Prefer the road agency responsible for the bridge or route over an undated third-party summary; prefer a current notice for the travel period over an older one; and look for detail about your exact direction, ramp, and detour. If the official information still leaves a material question unanswered, use the agency’s contact channel rather than guessing.

Examples of official information by agency

Agency example Useful information described by the agency Official page
WisDOT Its September 25, 2026 Northeast Region update says the 511 traveler map shows closures and road work; regional updates describe schedules and impacts over a two-week period. Work and impacts are weather-dependent and subject to change. Northeast Region update
Caltrans District 4 Project advisories and work schedules, with links to QuickMap for real-time traffic and 511 information. Central and Bayshore viaduct project
INDOT Road-map project updates and CARS information about speeds, incidents, closures, and detours where available, plus project contacts and customer service. INDOT4U and 511 information
CTDOT Dutch Point project-stage information, detours, cameras, and email updates; Gold Star Memorial Bridge traffic-pattern notices, speed map, camera feeds, and detour videos. Dutch Point Viaduct and Gold Star Memorial Bridge

MassDOT Recurring web and email updates about progress, detours, and road conditions for the I-495 Andover-Lawrence bridge replacements. I-495 Andover-Lawrence bridge replacements

These examples show why the best checking method is a comparison of sources rather than a search for one universal map. A project page may offer construction schedules, staged traffic patterns, and detour maps; another project may also provide email updates, cameras, speed information, or videos. A traffic map’s functions also vary by agency. Use the source that answers each part of the question: project notices for planned arrangements, live traffic information for reported current conditions, and agency contacts for ambiguity.

What matters most when checking a closure

  • The responsible road authority’s project page is the best starting point for planned, project-specific construction stages and detours.
  • The official 511 service or traffic map is the better check for current conditions, with features varying by jurisdiction.
  • A notice only answers your question if its date, time, direction, ramp, and detour match your trip.

There is no single agency service or detour that can be named for every bridge. The route and jurisdiction determine where to look, and construction information can change after it is published. Check the official project notice and current traffic information close to travel, then ask the road agency if an important detail about your movement remains unclear.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find out if a bridge is closed today?

Open the responsible transportation agency’s bridge-project page and read the latest dated traffic notice. Then check the agency’s official 511 service or traffic map for current closures and road work. Confirm that the date, hours, direction, ramp, and detour match your trip, and recheck close to departure because schedules and conditions can change.

Where can I find bridge construction detour updates?

Start with the official project page for the bridge or route. It is the best place to find planned construction stages, dated advisories, lane shifts, ramp closures, and detour maps. Use the local official 511 service or traffic map as a separate check for current conditions.

Does a bridge closure notice apply to both directions?

Not necessarily. Check the notice for the affected direction, approach, lane, and ramps, and look for a traffic-pattern map or separate direction-specific notice. Do not assume that a closure described for one movement also closes the other.

What should I do if the project page and traffic map disagree?

Compare their dates and time frames. A project page may describe a planned or longer-lived construction stage, while a traffic map shows conditions when you check it. Review the newest agency notice, check again near departure, and contact the project team if the specific closure or detour remains unclear.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I rely on a camera or email alert instead of checking the notice?

Use cameras and project email updates as extra verification, not as replacements for the dated project notice and official traffic map. A camera may show a particular location, and alerts may describe a change, but check that the information applies to your date, direction, ramp, and route.

The Bottom Line

For planned bridge detours, use the responsible agency’s project page; for current closures, check its official 511 service or traffic map. Verify the dates, hours, direction, ramps, and route, then recheck close to departure and contact the agency if the notice is unclear.
