For the City of Minneapolis one- and two-family residential permit process, check the ProjectDox project and the email notifications tied to it. After the City accepts your application, it sends a ProjectDox invitation with a link and verification code. In ProjectDox, look for a resubmit task, review-completion or revision notice, and a fee notification. If the status is still unclear, ask the development coordinator assigned to your project.
Approval is not the same as issuance: after all departments approve the plans, you still pay the permit fee. The City says the issued permit and approved plans can be downloaded from ProjectDox after payment.

What “checking the status” means in Minneapolis
Minneapolis does not describe one universal public status lookup for every building-permit category. The workflow documented by the City for one- and two-family residential building permits uses ProjectDox, an online system for receiving construction plans and documents and routing them through review. The City’s construction permit application process page explains that applicants receive project instructions after the submission is accepted.
That distinction matters. A project may be waiting for intake screening, moving through department review, returned for missing information, approved but awaiting payment, or already issued. ProjectDox notifications and tasks show those transitions more reliably than a general web search. The process described below is specifically for the City’s one- and two-family residential workflow. If your application is commercial, multifamily, a trade permit, a right-of-way permit, or another specialty type, do not assume the same portal, stages, or review estimate applies; ask the City which process covers your application.

Step 1: Find the ProjectDox invitation
Wait for acceptance and the access email
The City sends ProjectDox access instructions after it accepts an application. The invitation email contains a ProjectDox link and a verification code. Search the inbox used on the permit application, including spam, junk, quarantine, and organizational mail filters. Search for “ProjectDox,” “Minneapolis,” the project address, or a permit-related subject.
The invitation is not merely an informational message. It is the route to the project record where plans, comments, tasks, and notices are exchanged. If you have not received an invitation, first confirm that the City has accepted the application and that the email address on the submission is correct. The City’s ProjectDox applicant login guide, updated August 28, 2023, provides the first-login sequence and verification-code instructions.
Use the City’s instructions rather than a saved or guessed URL
Open the link in the City email and follow the verification prompts. If your contractor, architect, or filing service submitted the application, ask whether the invitation went to that person or to another contact listed on the project. More than one person may need access, but each user should follow the City’s account and invitation process instead of sharing credentials.
Step 2: Sign in and inspect the project
Open the correct project
After signing in, verify the project address, application description, and other identifying details before interpreting a status. Applicants who work on several properties can otherwise mistake one project’s review notice for another’s. The City’s ProjectDox instructions page explains the system used to collect and review construction plans.
Check tasks, messages, and notifications
Review the project dashboard for open tasks and unread notifications. A missing document or correction can create a “Resubmit Task.” A task is an action request, not an approval. Open it, read the reviewer’s instructions, and identify exactly which drawing, form, calculation, or explanation must be supplied. Complete the requested upload or response in the project rather than relying on an email reply alone.
Also check notifications for review completion, requests for revisions, and requests for additional information. Keep the notification date and the response deadline, if one is shown, in your project records. A task that remains open can prevent the application from progressing even when another department has finished its review.

Confirm that uploads are accepted
After submitting a revised file, confirm that ProjectDox shows the upload or task response as received. Use clear filenames and upload the complete requested document, not an unrelated replacement. If the system reports an error, capture the message and contact the person responsible for the project or the assigned coordinator; do not assume that a failed upload reached the reviewer.

ProjectDox does not make every notification mean the same thing. Use the wording and the action requested to determine where the application stands.
| Signal | Likely meaning | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Invitation with verification code | The City has accepted the submission far enough to provide project access. | Sign in, verify the address and project details, and inspect the dashboard. |
| Resubmit Task | A reviewer needs a correction, missing document, or explanation. | Read every instruction, provide a complete response, and submit it through the task. |
| Review completed or revision notice | A department has finished a review or identified changes or additional information. | Determine whether the notice is an approval or a request and respond where required. |
| All reviews approved | Applicable department reviews are complete. | Look for the separate fee notification; approval alone does not issue the permit. |
| Fee notification | Payment remains due before issuance. | Pay using the City’s instructions and retain the confirmation. |
| Issued permit and stamped plans | Payment and the documented issuance step are complete. | Download the documents and save them with the project records. |
If a notice uses unfamiliar wording, do not guess from a color, icon, or a single department’s result. Read the full message and compare it with the open tasks. The assigned development coordinator can clarify which stage applies to the whole application.
How the City’s review stages affect the status
For the documented residential process, a development coordinator performs an intake check before department review. The City states: “Your submission will not be forwarded for department reviews until it is complete.” That means an application can appear to be waiting even though Construction Code Services, Zoning Administration, Public Works, or another department has not yet received it.
| Stage | What it means | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Application received or accepted | The City has received the submission and, after acceptance, can provide ProjectDox access. | Find the invitation email, sign in, and verify the project details. |
| Intake completeness check | The development coordinator checks whether required items are present. An incomplete submission is not forwarded to department reviewers. | Watch for missing-item requests and supply every item through the instructed channel. |
| Department review | Once complete, plans may be routed to Construction Code Services, Zoning Administration, Public Works, and other applicable departments. | Read each review notification and respond to revisions or information requests. |
| Resubmit task | A reviewer has requested a correction, missing document, or additional information. | Open the task, make the requested changes, upload the response, and confirm submission. |
| All reviews approved | Department reviews are complete, but the permit has not necessarily been issued. | Look for the fee notice and pay the amount due. |
| Issued | Payment has been made and the permit is issued in the documented process. | Download the issued permit and approved or stamped plans from ProjectDox and retain them with the project records. |
What the City’s timing estimate tells you
For the one- and two-family residential plan-review process described by Minneapolis, the posted estimate is 15 business days for the initial plan review and five business days for each resubmission review. The City presents these as estimates, not guaranteed deadlines. They apply to the specified residential process and should not be treated as a citywide promise for every permit type.
A resubmission review generally starts after the requested corrections and documents have been submitted. If intake is incomplete, the application may not yet be in department review, so counting 15 business days from the date you first uploaded files can give a misleading expectation. Record the dates of acceptance, each resubmit task, your response, and each review notice so you can describe the timeline accurately when asking for help.

Example timeline
Suppose the City accepts a complete application on a Monday. The initial review estimate is 15 business days from that review stage, not necessarily 15 calendar days from the first draft upload. If a reviewer returns a resubmit task and you provide a complete response, the stated estimate for that resubmission review is five business days. A second correction can create another five-business-day resubmission estimate. Weekends, holidays, intake gaps, missing information, and the scope of a different permit type can all make the actual calendar span longer.
Approval, payment, and permit issuance are separate events
One of the most common status misunderstandings is treating “all reviews approved” as “permit issued.” The City’s process places payment after departmental approval. In practical terms:
- ProjectDox shows that the applicable departments have approved the plans.
- The City sends or posts a permit-fee notification.
- You pay the fee using the instructions provided by Minneapolis.
- After payment, the issued permit and approved plans can be downloaded from ProjectDox.
If you see an approval notice but no issued permit, check whether the fee notice is outstanding. If you have paid and the issued documents are not available, keep the payment confirmation and contact the assigned development coordinator with the project address and application details.

When ProjectDox does not show a clear status
You never received an invitation
- Check the email address used on the application and all filtered folders.
- Ask the applicant, designer, or contractor who submitted the application whether the invitation went to their address.
- Confirm that the City accepted the application; an incomplete intake may precede ProjectDox department review.
- If access is still missing, contact the assigned development coordinator rather than creating a second application or guessing at a portal address.
Your project has a resubmit task
Open the task and read the reviewer’s complete request. Gather every listed correction before resubmitting, because a partial response can generate another review cycle. Upload revised plans or documents in the format and location the task specifies, submit the response, and watch for a new notification. The City’s estimate for each resubmission review is five business days for the described one- and two-family process, but the estimate does not remove the need to provide complete information.
The project has been quiet longer than expected
Compare the elapsed time with the City’s scope-limited estimate and check whether an open task, missing intake item, or unpaid fee explains the pause. Then ask the assigned development coordinator for a project-specific update. Include the property address, application or project identifier, submission date, and the last notification you received. A precise timeline helps the coordinator distinguish intake, active department review, resubmission, and issuance questions.
You cannot tell whether a notice is an approval
Read the notice’s wording and identify whether it refers to a department review, a request for information, all reviews approved, a fee, or an issued permit. Do not infer issuance from a single department’s approval. Under the documented process, issuance follows approval of all applicable reviews and payment.

You submitted a correction but the task remains open
Check that the file appears in the project, that the response was formally submitted, and that the upload is associated with the correct task. A file sitting in a document folder without a completed task response may not satisfy the reviewer’s request. If the task still appears open after a successful submission, save the confirmation or screenshot and ask the coordinator whether anything else is required.

The City’s residential guide directs status questions to the development coordinator assigned to the project. For a general Development Review route, the City lists the following contact details in its process material:
| Contact method | Details |
|---|---|
| Telephone | 612-673-3000 |
| In-person address | 505 Fourth Ave. S., Room 220, Minneapolis, MN 55415 |
| Listed service-center hours | Monday–Thursday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. |
Hours and service arrangements can change, so verify them on the City’s current application-process page before visiting. Calling the general number is most useful when you do not know the assigned coordinator or cannot access the project. If you already have a coordinator’s name or contact information, use that project-specific route first.

A status request is easier to answer when it identifies the exact project. Prepare:
- Property address and, if available, the ProjectDox project name or application number.
- Name and email address of the applicant or authorized contact.
- Date the application was submitted and the date the City accepted it, if known.
- Date of the latest ProjectDox notification, resubmit task, or upload.
- A short description of the problem: no invitation, open task, missing review, fee question, payment completed, or issued documents unavailable.
- Screenshots or copied wording from an error or notification, with sensitive account information removed where appropriate.
Do not send multiple duplicate applications merely because a status is not immediately visible. Duplicate submissions can make it harder to identify which project record is current; ask the coordinator to confirm the correct record instead.

- Counting from the wrong date: The 15-business-day estimate concerns the described initial plan-review process, not necessarily the day an incomplete application was first uploaded.
- Treating a request as an approval: A revision or additional-information notice requires action before the review can move forward.
- Responding only by email: If ProjectDox provides a task, complete the upload and response in that task so the project record shows the submission.
- Stopping after one approval: Every applicable department must approve the plans before the fee and issuance steps.
- Assuming every permit uses ProjectDox: The documented workflow is for one- and two-family residential construction plans; other categories may follow different instructions.
- Visiting without checking hours: The listed hours are a useful starting point, but verify current hours before going to Room 220.

- Verify the project address and application details after signing in.
- Review open tasks, unread notices, and requests for revisions or additional information.
- Respond completely to any “Resubmit Task” and confirm that ProjectDox records the submission.
- Track the 15-business-day initial-review and five-business-day resubmission estimates only as scope-limited estimates.
- When all reviews are approved, look for the fee notification and pay it.
- After payment, download the issued permit and approved plans from ProjectDox.
- If the status remains unclear, contact the assigned development coordinator or Minneapolis Development Review at 612-673-3000.
Limits of this status method
The City’s published material reviewed for this guide does not establish one public status portal covering every Minneapolis building-permit type. It specifically documents the ProjectDox workflow for one- and two-family residential construction plans. A different project category may use different intake requirements, reviewers, notifications, timing, or access instructions. Before relying on the residential steps or estimates, ask Development Review which workflow applies to your permit.

How long does Minneapolis take to review a residential permit?
The City’s posted estimate for the described one- and two-family process is 15 business days for the initial plan review and five business days for each resubmission review. These are estimates, not guaranteed deadlines, and do not necessarily apply to other permit categories.
Does approval mean my permit is issued?
No. After all applicable departments approve the plans, the City’s process requires payment of the permit fee. The issued permit and approved plans become available for download from ProjectDox after payment.
Who should I contact for a project-specific update?
Start with the development coordinator assigned to your project. If you do not know the coordinator or cannot access the project, Minneapolis Development Review lists 612-673-3000 and 505 Fourth Ave. S., Room 220. Verify current service hours before visiting.
What information should I include in a status request?
Provide the property address, ProjectDox project name or application number if available, applicant contact information, submission and acceptance dates, the date of the latest notification, and a concise description of the issue.
