Check the official traffic service for every state on your I-26 route shortly before departure: South Carolina 511, North Carolina’s DriveNC.gov, and Tennessee’s TNSmartWay Traffic. These services report conditions within their respective states, so a trip that crosses a state line may require more than one check. For South Carolina road advisories, also consult SCDOT’s Road Conditions service.
The practical answer to “Is there construction on I-26?” depends on which part of I-26 you plan to travel and when you check. The official state services report changing traffic information; a clear map or an earlier result cannot promise what conditions will be when you reach a location.

Which official I-26 traffic service should you use?
I-26 runs through Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Start by identifying the states and portions of the highway on your planned route, then check the state DOT service for each portion. Do not assume one state’s map reports conditions for the entire multistate corridor.
| State | Official source | What it reports | Phone option and availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| South Carolina | South Carolina 511 | Traffic information, including incidents, construction, congestion, weather, and other events. SCDOT’s FAQ specifically includes I-26 among the routes covered. | The service has a mobile app, but SCDOT advises against operating it while driving. Check before leaving or when safely stopped. |
| North Carolina | DriveNC.gov | NCDOT’s current traffic information includes road closures, construction work, and incidents. | Call 511 in North Carolina or 877-511-4662 from outside the state. Listed operator hours are weekdays 8:15 a.m.–7:45 p.m.; weekends and state holidays 8:15 a.m.–4:45 p.m. NCDOT advises using DriveNC.gov overnight and during emergencies. |
| Tennessee | TNSmartWay Traffic | Incidents, construction activities, weather-related road conditions, traffic cameras, overhead message signs, and speed data. | Dial 511 in Tennessee or 877-244-0065 from outside the state. |
These are statewide services, not a single shared I-26 control room. If your route crosses a state line, check each state segment with its corresponding DOT source.

For a short trip contained within one state, use that state’s service for the I-26 section you plan to travel. For a longer trip, check every state you will enter, even if the first section looks clear. Each agency’s information is tied to its own service area; South Carolina 511’s specific coverage of I-26 does not make it the source for I-26 in Tennessee or North Carolina.
The services offer different kinds of information. South Carolina 511 provides map layers for incidents, construction, congestion, weather, and other events, and its FAQ names I-26 as a covered route. North Carolina’s NCDOT directs travelers to DriveNC.gov for current closures, construction work, and incidents. Tennessee’s TNSmartWay description includes traffic cameras, overhead message signs, and speed data in addition to incidents, construction, and weather-related road conditions. Use the service descriptions as a guide to what each state offers, rather than expecting identical displays or categories across all three states.
How to check I-26 before departure
- Map the portion of I-26 you plan to use. Note the states your route enters and the approximate highway segments you expect to travel. This determines which state services you need. A trip may involve just one state, or it may require separate checks as it continues across state lines.
- Open each relevant state’s official traffic service. Review the reported incidents, closures, construction or work activity, and congestion where those categories are available. In South Carolina, the 511 map provides layers for incidents, construction, congestion, weather, and other events. NCDOT identifies DriveNC.gov for closures, construction work, and incidents; TDOT describes TNSmartWay as covering incidents, construction activities, weather conditions, cameras, message signs, and speed data.
- Check South Carolina road advisories separately. Use the SCDOT Road Conditions service for construction, maintenance, and hazardous-weather advisories on SCDOT-maintained roads. It is a useful second check, but its coverage is limited to those roads. It complements South Carolina 511 rather than replacing its traffic information.
- Look at the whole route, not only the starting point. An incident or work zone farther along the trip may matter even if the first segment appears clear. Compare the reported location with the state and portion of I-26 you will travel. A report attached to one part of the route does not establish that all of I-26 is affected.
- Recheck close to departure. Traffic and road conditions can change, so an earlier check may no longer reflect the trip ahead. Treat displayed travel times as estimates, not promises; SCDOT says South Carolina 511 travel times are dynamic estimates. NCDOT also describes its information as current, not as a guarantee of what you will encounter later.
- Use phone services only when safe. Check a map or app before setting off. Do not operate a mobile app while driving; if you need to check again, wait until you are safely stopped. SCDOT’s FAQ specifically warns users not to operate its app while driving.
A useful sequence is to check the route once while planning, then check again close to the time you expect to leave. The earlier look helps you identify the relevant states and services; the later look gives you a more timely view of the reports available then. If your departure time changes substantially, check again rather than relying on an old result. The services describe changing traffic and road conditions, not a fixed schedule of delays.
When reviewing a report, note both its type and its location. An incident, construction notice, closure, congestion report, weather advisory, or maintenance advisory is not interchangeable with the others. The state services list some of these categories explicitly, but the information provided by each differs. Use the wording and location in the official service to understand what has actually been reported, and avoid treating a general category label as proof that a particular segment is closed.
What each service can tell you about construction and delays
South Carolina: use 511 for traffic and Road Conditions for advisories
South Carolina 511 is the primary traffic check for the South Carolina part of I-26. Its map layers include construction as well as incidents, congestion, weather, and other events. The SCDOT FAQ confirms I-26 is among the highway routes covered and cautions that displayed travel times are estimates.

- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
For a second view of road conditions, consult SCDOT’s Road Conditions service. It describes construction, maintenance, and hazardous-weather advisories on SCDOT-maintained roads. Because it covers only those roads, use it as a complement to South Carolina 511 rather than as a replacement for the traffic map.
These two SCDOT services have related but distinct uses. South Carolina 511 is the traffic information check, with map layers that include incidents, construction, congestion, weather, and other events. Road Conditions is specifically described as a source for construction, maintenance, and hazardous-weather advisories on SCDOT-maintained roads. Checking both gives you those two views; it does not turn either one into a forecast or guarantee that every change will be visible before it occurs.

If South Carolina 511 displays a travel time, treat it as a dynamic estimate. It is not a promised arrival time, and a time shown during planning may not remain the same by departure. Use it as one piece of the current traffic picture, then check again nearer to leaving.
North Carolina: use DriveNC.gov for closures, work, and incidents
NCDOT identifies DriveNC.gov as its source for the most up-to-date traffic information, including road closures, construction work, and incidents. You can also call 511 within North Carolina or 877-511-4662 from outside the state. The phone service’s operator hours are weekdays 8:15 a.m.–7:45 p.m. and weekends and state holidays 8:15 a.m.–4:45 p.m. NCDOT recommends DriveNC.gov overnight and during emergencies.
The phone option has stated operator hours, so do not assume an operator is available at every hour. If you are checking overnight or during an emergency, NCDOT points travelers to DriveNC.gov. A phone number is an alternative way to seek information during its listed hours; it does not mean the phone service covers other states’ I-26 segments.

Use DriveNC.gov to check the North Carolina section of your route for the items NCDOT identifies: closures, construction work, and incidents. If the route continues into another state, complete a separate check with that state’s official source. This matters whether you are following the highway through multiple states or simply approaching I-26 from an adjoining route.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTennessee: use TNSmartWay for traffic and road-condition information
TNSmartWay Traffic and Tennessee 511 cover incidents, construction activities, weather-related road conditions, traffic cameras, overhead message signs, and speed data. Dial 511 in Tennessee or 877-244-0065 from outside the state. Check the Tennessee portion of your route in this service; the description of its coverage does not establish conditions on I-26 in North Carolina or South Carolina.
The listed cameras, message signs, and speed data are additional types of traffic information TDOT says its service covers. They can help you review information beyond a construction or incident listing, but the service description does not guarantee that every point on the road has a camera or a message sign. Check what is available for the route and time you need, and use the other relevant state services if your trip crosses a border.
How to interpret the results
- A clear map is a snapshot, not a guarantee. Conditions and travel times are dynamic. Recheck close to departure, especially if your plans or timing change.
- A listed project or incident may affect only part of your trip. Match the reported location to the I-26 segment you expect to use rather than assuming the entire highway is affected.
- Construction and closure information serve different purposes. Construction or maintenance activity signals work or an advisory; a reported closure is a more direct indication that a road is closed. Use the relevant state service to see what it reports for the route.
- Use the state-specific source for the state-specific segment. South Carolina 511’s I-26 coverage does not make it a source for the Tennessee or North Carolina sections.
- Do not treat an estimated travel time as a promised arrival time. SCDOT explicitly describes displayed South Carolina 511 travel times as dynamic estimates.
- Distinguish what a service lists from what it does not establish. A service’s description tells you the kinds of reports or traffic information it offers. It does not establish that an unlisted location is clear, nor does it supply confirmed conditions outside its stated state coverage.
For instance, seeing construction information in South Carolina 511 tells you to review the reported location and details for that portion of the trip. It does not by itself say that the same work affects I-26 in North Carolina or Tennessee. Likewise, an incident shown on the map should be understood as a report tied to a location, not an automatic statement that the entire route is blocked. Use the official source for the state and segment in question, and avoid drawing a corridor-wide conclusion from a single report.
Do not infer that a trip will be delay-free simply because a particular category has no item displayed when you check. The services provide traffic information that changes over time, and the source material does not establish the live condition of a specific segment at a future departure time. The most reliable practical approach is to check the relevant state sources near departure and interpret their reports narrowly: by state, location, category, and displayed estimate.

If a map or phone service is unavailable
For North Carolina, NCDOT directs travelers to DriveNC.gov overnight and during emergencies; its phone operators have the stated weekday, weekend, and holiday hours above. For Tennessee and South Carolina, the listed services include web traffic maps and phone or app access as described by their DOTs. If you cannot access a live service, the available information does not establish the current condition of a particular I-26 segment; check again when access is available and do not assume the route is clear.
If the phone option is not available at the time you need it, use the state’s web service where possible. For North Carolina, the overnight and emergency direction is explicit: use DriveNC.gov. In Tennessee, TDOT lists TNSmartWay Traffic and the 511 phone option, with 877-244-0065 for callers outside Tennessee. In South Carolina, use South Carolina 511 for traffic information and the SCDOT Road Conditions service for the listed road advisories. These sources are not interchangeable across state boundaries.
No separate product is required to carry out this check. The relevant information is provided through official DOT web and telephone services, with South Carolina 511 also described as having a mobile app. The important limitation is safe use: view or operate the service before departure or while safely stopped, never while driving.
