Start by finding out whether weak water affects one fixture, several fixtures, hot water only, or the whole home. A faucet clogged with sediment can have poor flow even when the home’s incoming water pressure is normal. For a useful whole-home check, measure static pressure at a hose bibb while all water use is off; EPA WaterSense recommends 45–60 psi for incoming service pressure.
First, locate where the problem is
Pressure is the force pushing water through the plumbing; flow is the amount that reaches a fixture over time. A blocked aerator can restrict flow at one faucet without indicating a whole-home pressure problem. Note which fixtures are affected and whether the change began suddenly.

- One faucet or shower: Check its aerator or showerhead for sediment and confirm its local shutoff valves are open.
- Several fixtures or the whole home: Continue with the main-supply, leak, utility, and gauge checks below.
- Hot water only: Treat this as a hot-water-side symptom. Incoming service pressure may not be the cause, so arrange diagnosis rather than assuming the home needs higher pressure.
Check the simple causes before measuring
Confirm the main shutoff is open
Check that the home’s main water shutoff is fully open. A partly closed valve can restrict supply throughout the house. Do not force a stuck or damaged valve; have a plumber assess it.

Ask about utility work or a neighborhood issue
If the change was sudden, or nearby homes have the same symptom, contact the water utility to ask about an outage, maintenance, or a local supply-pressure problem. A pressure reading inside the home cannot by itself distinguish a utility issue from a problem in your plumbing.

- IP67 Waterproof: The circular dial is enclosed in a 304 stainless steel case for corrosion resistance. The PRV-Tex Vent design can reduce fogging of windows inside or moisture damage from the infiltrating water such as being installed in environments exposed to moisture or rain. Offer clear reading and rain-resistant.
- Wetted Materials: lead free brass, stainless steel, and food grade silicone sealing ring. Suit for measuring potable drinking water pressure.
- Compatible with water pump, drip irrigation pressure regulator, RV tank, pipe tester, outdoor spigot, hose faucet, garden hose, regulator valve, washing machine outlets, ice maker, RO system, sprinkler, etc.
- The red max pointer allows you to record spikes in pressure when you are away from the gauge. Just adjust the red max pointer to rest above the black pointer before testing your pressure. When the gauge reads pressure the black hand will drag the red max pointer and the pointer will record the max pressure seen on the gauge. To reset the max pointer, just turn it down to zero above the black pointer and test again. The structure adopts a long-lasting design to support 10,000 times of use.
- Measures pressure with dual scale (0-200 psi/0-14 bar). Display accuracy is + or - 3/2/3% over the entire range of the gauge. 3/4" female hose thread(FHT) is typically utilized in garden hose thread(GHT).
Look for leaks
Inspect visible pipe joints, faucets, appliance connections, toilets, and the water heater for moisture. To check the meter, turn off water use and note its reading; wait without using water, then check again. A changed reading can indicate a leak. For a toilet, add dye or food coloring to the tank and wait without flushing; color appearing in the bowl suggests the flapper or flush-valve seal may be leaking. EPA WaterSense says average household leaks can waste nearly 10,000 gallons per year; that is an average, not an estimate for every home. See EPA WaterSense leak-check guidance and its summary of common leaks and water waste.
Measure incoming service pressure with a gauge
A hose-bibb water pressure test gauge with a readable psi scale is an optional diagnostic tool, not a repair. Use a connection that fits the outdoor hose bibb. EPA WaterSense’s home-maintenance guidance recommends measuring incoming pressure with a gauge.

- Precision Dual-Scale with Peak Memory: This pressure meter measures 0-200 PSI/0-14 Bar with ±2-1-2% accuracy (ASME B40.1 Grade A). Red max pointer tracks and retains peak pressure spikes, easily reset for monitoring faucets, spigots, or hydraulic systems.
- Rust-Free, Leak-Proof Durability: Rust-proof black plastic case, brass connector, and copper alloy internals resist corrosion. Anti-fog lens, rubber seal, and included Teflon tape ensure leak-free, weather-resistant performance indoors or outdoors.
- Universal 3/4" Hose Thread Compatibility: Easily connects to garden hoses, faucets, spigots, or sprinklers with a standard 3/4" female hose thread—no tools needed. Compact 2.5" dial suits home plumbing, gardening, or RV camping.
- BurdongEasy-to-Read 2.5" Dial for All Conditions: Large, bold PSI/Bar markings and red max pointer ensure clear readings in low light or wet environments. Trusted by home inspectors, gardeners, and DIYers for irrigation, showers, or pumps. tube type, Brass and Copper Alloy Wetted Parts
- Versatile & Long-Lasting Performance: Ideal for home, garden, hydraulic systems, RO units, or washing machines. Durable Bourdon tube withstands 10,000+ cycles, with rubber seal and Teflon tape for secure pressure testing. Backed by a lifetime satisfaction guarantee.
- Turn off water-using fixtures and systems, including appliances that may draw water during the test.
- Attach the gauge securely to an outdoor hose bibb.
- Open the bibb fully and read the gauge. This is the home’s static service-pressure reading, taken with no water flowing.
EPA WaterSense recommends 45–60 psi for incoming service pressure so household fixtures can perform properly and efficiently. This is guidance, not a universal legal requirement. A static reading does not prove that every fixture will have adequate flow when several fixtures are in use, nor does it identify the fault by itself. Pressure can vary with utility, location, elevation, home configuration, and water source.
Choose the next step based on the reading and symptoms
| Finding | What to do |
|---|---|
| Only one fixture has weak flow | Clean or inspect its aerator or showerhead and check its local shutoff valves. If the restriction remains, have that fixture or branch assessed. |
| Pressure is substantially below 45 psi throughout the home | Check for leaks and ask the utility about a supply issue. If whole-home pressure remains low, arrange professional diagnosis rather than trying to raise pressure blindly. |
| Pressure is substantially above the 45–60 psi recommended range | Ask a licensed plumber to assess pressure regulation. High pressure can damage plumbing, fixtures, and appliances; do not adjust or install a pressure-regulating valve (PRV) without professional assessment. |
| Only hot water is weak | Seek diagnosis of the hot-water side instead of assuming incoming service pressure is low. |
| A meter check suggests a leak, or pressure changes across the home | Contact a plumber to locate and repair the cause, particularly if the leak is hidden or the piping may be corroded or obstructed. |
When a plumber or the water utility should take over
Contact the water utility when symptoms suggest a supply-side issue, particularly if neighbors are affected or the change coincides with utility work. Call a licensed plumber for persistent low pressure, a suspected hidden leak, corroded or obstructed piping, a PRV concern, or a problem involving a well pressure tank.

EPA WaterSense’s July 2023 Service Water Pressure Technical Sheet says most U.S. plumbing codes require PRVs where supplied pressure exceeds 80 psi, and notes supply-main pressure can reach 100 psi or more. These are code-context and risk figures, not permission to change a valve yourself: verify the governing local code. PRV installation can also affect thermal expansion by creating a closed system, and local requirements may apply to fire-sprinkler systems. Homes on wells may use pressure tanks, which require diagnosis suited to that system.
