Before driving into Colorado’s mountains, check the official COtrip.org map for current road conditions, closures and route impacts. For a planned trip, use the COtrip Planner app to review the route and set available alerts; you can also call 511 for current road and weather information. Check again shortly before departure, especially in winter, because a forecast is not a live road-status report and conditions can change.

Start with COtrip.org, then check your route—not just your destination

CDOT directs travelers to COtrip.org to know conditions and closures before they go. Its interactive map and road information are the best starting point for checking what is happening on the roads you expect to use. A mountain destination may be reachable by more than one route, and the conditions on one segment do not establish that the rest of the drive is open or passable. Follow the roads in your itinerary rather than checking only the town, resort, trailhead or job site at the end.

For a practical check, identify the route you intend to take, then review the reported conditions, closures and impacts along it. Pay attention to the full drive: a problem on an approach road, a connecting highway or the last leg can matter even when the main highway appears clear. If you are considering an alternate route, check that route separately. Do not assume it is safer or open simply because it avoids a reported delay on your first choice.

COtrip is a snapshot of current reported information, not a promise about what you will encounter later. A road’s status can change after you check it because of weather, an incident, construction or other conditions. Use the map to inform a departure decision, not to conclude that a road will remain open for the entire trip.

It can help to think of a mountain drive as a series of connected road segments, rather than one trip from your starting point to a destination. A closure or impact on any link can change whether the whole route works. If you have a preferred route and a backup, check each one from end to end. A detour that looks shorter on a map is not automatically an available or suitable substitute; current road information is still needed for every road you might use.

Choose the right way to check: map, app or 511

CDOT provides several ways to get traveler information. They serve related but different purposes; official sources do not establish that one is more accurate or faster than another.

Channel Best use What to know
COtrip.org Review current road information, closures and impacts on an interactive map. Use it before departure to check the roads in your planned route. CDOT also points travelers to it for winter road and traction-law information.
COtrip Planner app Plan a specific trip and receive available updates about route impacts. CDOT announced free push notifications on May 20, 2026, in addition to text/SMS and email updates. Alerts are useful, but do not assume one will arrive before every change.
511 Get current road and weather information by phone. CDOT lists 511 as a phone option. It is useful if you need information without navigating the website or app.

CDOT’s May 20, 2026 announcement said COtrip.org offered English, Spanish and Vietnamese language options at that time. Digital services can change, so check the current site or app for the options available when you travel.

Choose based on how you want to access the information. COtrip.org is suited to looking across a route on a map; the COtrip Planner adds trip planning and alert options; and 511 provides a phone route to current road and weather information. You can use more than one channel—for example, review the route on the map and use the app’s available alerts to monitor impacts. These are access options, not a basis for assuming that one channel has a guaranteed speed or accuracy advantage.

CDOT says travelers can subscribe to alerts about construction and closures in their area or along their route. An alert subscription is useful for monitoring a trip, but it is not a substitute for checking current conditions before you leave. No alert should be treated as a guarantee that you will be notified before every change.

How to make a useful pre-drive check

  1. Choose your intended roads. Before opening the map, know the general route you plan to drive and the roads that connect you to the destination. If you have a second route in mind, treat it as a separate route to check.
  2. Review current conditions and closures. On COtrip.org, inspect the road information along the route, including any reported closure or impact. Do not treat a clear-looking segment as confirmation about roads farther ahead.
  3. Check trip impacts and alerts. If using the COtrip Planner, use its trip-planning and route-impact functions for your specific trip. Subscribe to available construction or closure updates for your area or route if they would help you monitor changes.
  4. Check winter requirements separately. When winter conditions are possible, look for active traction or chain-law information and any avalanche-control closure updates. A general weather forecast does not tell you whether a law is active or a road is currently closed.
  5. Use 511 if you want phone access. CDOT says callers can use 511 for current road and weather information. It is another official way to check, not a guarantee that conditions will stay the same after the call.
  6. Recheck close to departure. Road, weather, incident and construction conditions can change. Review the route again shortly before setting out rather than relying on an earlier check.

When reviewing a route, note the locations of reported impacts and whether they affect a road you plan to take. If an alert or map entry prompts you to consider a different road, check that alternative all the way to its connection with your original route and onward to your destination. A route plan is only as useful as its weakest segment, so do not stop checking once the main highway appears clear.

For a longer drive, make a plan for how you will monitor changes without using a phone while driving. Review the route and relevant information before you leave. If you need to consult the app or map en route, first pull over in a safe place; CDOT also advises using voice announcements where available. CDOT’s May 20, 2026 release states, “The primary responsibility of every driver is the safe operation of their vehicle.” An alert is a reason to make a safe decision, not a reason to handle a phone in traffic.

Understand closures, especially in mountain weather

A closure is not always evidence that a road has been damaged or that crews expect a long-term blockage. CDOT describes a safety closure as a precaution used during inclement weather to reduce the chance of traffic incidents, congestion or other safety risks. In December 2025, CDOT defined it this way: “A safety closure is a precaution taken during inclement weather to reduce the probability of traffic incidents, increased congestion or other safety-related factors.” Treat a reported closure as a real restriction; do not set out on the assumption that the road will reopen by the time you arrive.

Avalanche-control closures

Some mountain closures allow crews to bring down unstable snow and clear it before reopening the road. The length of this work cannot be estimated in advance, according to CDOT, because the amount of snow released is unpredictable. A closure estimate should therefore not be inferred from the time you first saw the notice, and an expected trip duration is not a reliable reopening schedule.

The scale of the hazard explains why this work is part of mountain-road operations. CDOT says 278 of the 522 known avalanche paths above Colorado highways are monitored and controlled by CDOT and the Colorado Avalanche Information Center each winter. That figure describes known paths and the agencies’ winter work; it does not predict whether a particular path or road will be affected on a particular day. Check the current closure information for your route instead of using a general avalanche statistic to judge whether it is open.

An avalanche-control closure is not simply a delay with a dependable countdown. Crews need to bring down unstable snow and clear it before the road can reopen, and the amount of snow released is unpredictable. That is why CDOT says the duration cannot be estimated. If your trip depends on that road, use current closure information to decide whether to wait, change plans or consider a separately checked alternate route; do not plan around an assumed reopening time.

Deciding what to do when a road is closed

  • Do not drive past a closure or attempt to use a closed road as a shortcut.
  • Check whether CDOT shows an alternate route, and review its conditions independently before choosing it.
  • If the route is closed for avalanche control, allow for an uncertain delay; CDOT says the duration cannot be estimated because the snow released varies.
  • If the available information does not support a safe alternative, delay the trip rather than treating a forecast or a hoped-for reopening as confirmation.

Do not treat a precautionary closure as optional just because its cause is weather or avalanche control rather than visible damage. The closure is meant to reduce risk while conditions are unsafe or crews are working. The practical question is not whether the road might reopen during your drive; it is whether current information supports a route you can use safely now.

Check traction and chain-law requirements before winter travel

CDOT says traction and chain laws may be implemented on any state highway. The active requirement is announced through highway signs, COtrip.org and road-condition alerts, so check the current information for the route and watch for signs as you travel. Do not assume a law is active—or inactive—because of the month, a forecast, or conditions on a different highway.

During a passenger-vehicle Chain Law, every vehicle must have chains or a CDOT-approved alternative traction device. This requirement is specific to the active law; do not substitute a general belief that your vehicle is prepared for checking the announced requirement. If the applicable equipment is not available or does not fit your vehicle and tires, resolve that before driving into the affected area.

CDOT’s listed alternative devices include AutoSock, Alpha Trax, EasySox, ISSE Tire Sock and ISSE Tire Sock Model 104. A product name on a list does not establish that a device fits every vehicle or tire. Verify compatibility with your vehicle and tire size, and check CDOT’s current approved-device list before relying on any alternative. The approved list and product availability can change; the information here does not establish current retail stock or fit for a particular car.

Keep the distinction clear: COtrip and alerts help you find out whether a traction or chain law is active; vehicle and tire compatibility determines whether your equipment is suitable for your vehicle. Both checks matter. If a law is announced for a road you plan to use, follow the applicable requirement rather than assuming that four-wheel drive or another vehicle feature replaces the required equipment.

For winter preparation, the useful order is to check the route for an active law, identify what equipment that law requires, and confirm that the chains or approved alternative you have are compatible with your vehicle and tires. Do not wait until you reach an affected highway to discover a device will not fit. If you are buying equipment, check your tire size and the current CDOT-approved list before choosing a product. The sources here do not establish a price, stock level or universal fit for any named device.

Traction requirements can apply on any state highway, so a route that begins on a lower-elevation road is not exempt from checking. Conditions and requirements may differ across roads; use the information and signs for the route you are actually driving. Recheck before departure and remain attentive to highway signs, rather than relying on a past trip or a law status seen for a different stretch of road.

Use forecasts for planning, not as proof of road status

A forecast can help you decide when to travel and what conditions may develop, but it cannot establish that a road is open, clear or passable at the time you reach it. Keep the questions separate: use forecasts to anticipate weather and possible impacts; use COtrip.org or 511 for current road and weather information. If the forecast changes after your first check, revisit the route information before leaving.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same distinction applies to an alert. An update can make you aware of an impact, but no alert system should be treated as a guarantee that every condition will be sent before it changes. Continue to make a fresh check when departure is near, and obey road signs and closures you encounter. A current map entry is not a guarantee about later conditions, and an absence of an alert should not be read as proof that nothing has changed.

In practice, use each information source for the question it can answer. A forecast helps you think ahead about possible weather; it does not answer whether a road is currently closed. A route alert can draw your attention to an impact; it does not guarantee that every new condition will reach you before it changes. COtrip.org and 511 are the official channels CDOT identifies for current road information, and a fresh check near departure is still important.

What CDOT’s operations coverage does—and does not—mean

CDOT says three traffic operations centers provide statewide coverage around the clock, 365 days a year. This describes the agency’s operations coverage, not a guarantee that every item shown in COtrip is updated instantly. The official sources do not provide a comparative accuracy, outage or update-latency statistic for COtrip.org, the app and 511. For that reason, use the channels as current-information tools without assigning them an unsupported update speed or treating any one entry as a forecast.

The round-the-clock coverage is useful context for how CDOT manages traveler information statewide, but it should not be mistaken for a promise about any single map item, alert or phone report. Use the available channels to check your route, then make the final decision based on the current information and conditions you encounter. If something changes, prioritize posted signs and closures rather than relying on a previous screen or assumption.

A final route check before leaving

  • Review the full planned route in COtrip.org, including connecting roads and the final approach.
  • Check reported closures and impacts, and inspect a proposed alternate route separately.
  • For winter travel, look for active traction or chain-law requirements and avalanche-control closure information.
  • Confirm that any required chains or approved alternative device is compatible with your vehicle and tires.
  • Use the COtrip Planner’s trip and alert features or call 511 if those access methods suit your needs.
  • Recheck shortly before departure, then put the phone away while driving. Pull over safely before interacting with the app or map.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where should I check CDOT road conditions before driving to the mountains?

Start with COtrip.org, which CDOT directs travelers to for current road conditions and closures. Review the roads along your whole route, not only the destination, and check again shortly before departure.

Is the COtrip app different from COtrip.org?

COtrip.org provides an interactive map and road information. The COtrip Planner app also supports trip planning and route-impact functions, with push notifications, text/SMS and email updates announced by CDOT on May 20, 2026. Features can change, and alerts are not guaranteed to arrive before every condition changes.

Can I call 511 for Colorado road conditions?

Yes. CDOT lists 511 as a phone option for current road and weather information. It is an alternative way to check if you do not want to use the website or app, but conditions can change after you call.

How often should I check road conditions before a mountain drive?

Check while planning and again shortly before setting out. Weather, incidents, construction and closures can change, so an earlier check or alert should not be treated as a guarantee of later conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a weather forecast tell me whether a mountain road is open?

No. A forecast helps you anticipate weather and possible impacts, but it does not establish live road status. Use COtrip.org or 511 for current road information, and follow posted signs and closures.

How long do avalanche-control road closures last?

CDOT says the duration cannot be estimated because the amount of snow brought down is unpredictable. Check current closure information rather than assuming an opening time based on when the closure began.

What should I do if my route is closed?

Treat the closure as a real restriction. Check current information for a possible alternate route and review that route independently. If no safe alternative is supported by the available information, delay the trip rather than counting on a forecast or hoped-for reopening.

When do I need chains or an alternative traction device?

Traction and chain laws may be implemented on any state highway. Check COtrip.org, road-condition alerts and highway signs for the active requirement on your route. During a passenger-vehicle Chain Law, every vehicle must have chains or a CDOT-approved alternative traction device.

Are CDOT-approved alternative traction devices compatible with every car?

No. CDOT lists alternatives including AutoSock, Alpha Trax, EasySox, ISSE Tire Sock and ISSE Tire Sock Model 104, but a listing does not mean a device fits every vehicle or tire. Check your tire size, vehicle compatibility and CDOT’s current approved list before relying on one.

Can I check the COtrip app while driving?

CDOT advises reviewing information before driving, pulling over safely before interacting with the app, or enabling voice announcements where available. Do not handle your phone in traffic; safe vehicle operation comes first.

The Bottom Line

Before a Colorado mountain drive, check the full route on COtrip.org, use the COtrip Planner or 511 as useful access options, and recheck shortly before departure. In winter, verify active traction or chain-law requirements and avalanche-control closures. Treat closures as real restrictions, confirm equipment fits your vehicle, and never use a phone while driving.
