How to Check a Digital Vessel Design for Structural and Safety Issues

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 3D vessel model is evidence for engineering verification, not a safety certificate. A defensible check starts by fixing the vessel’s design basis and applicable rules, then tests the controlled geometry, scantlings, materials, weights, loading cases and watertight arrangements against those requirements. The review must cover strength, stability, subdivision, freeboard and operational assumptions, with every result traceable to a model revision and a rule clause. Final statutory and class acceptance comes from the flag administration and the selected classification society, not from the modeling software or a colored stress plot.

The sequence below is designed for a naval architect, marine engineer, shipyard reviewer or technically informed owner. It is a review framework; the actual rules, interpretations, analyses and approval documents depend on vessel type, service, flag, class, design stage and, for some requirements, the building-contract date.

1. Freeze the design basis before opening the model

Write a one-page design-basis record and make it the controlling reference for every check. Without it, reviewers can produce technically correct calculations for the wrong vessel or the wrong edition of a rule.

Record the vessel and service envelope

  • Vessel type and principal dimensions, including length, breadth, depth, draught and displacement range.
  • Service, cargo or passenger role, machinery arrangement, speed profile and intended operating area.
  • Flag administration and the selected classification society, including any notation or service restrictions.
  • Design stage: concept, basic design, contract design, production design, conversion or in-service modification.
  • Building-contract date where a regulation uses it as a scope condition. For example, the IMO’s goal-based structural requirement for covered bulk carriers and oil tankers at least 150 m in length applies to vessels whose building contract was placed on or after 1 July 2016.

List the governing instruments and editions

At minimum, identify the exact editions and amendments being applied. The IMO Ship Design and Stability material identifies SOLAS chapter II-1, the 1966 Load Line Convention and the 2008 International Code on Intact Stability as core instruments for safe ship design. SOLAS chapter II-1 addresses construction, structure, subdivision, stability, machinery and electrical installations. The Load Line Convention addresses freeboard and watertight integrity. The 2008 Intact Stability Code includes criteria and precautions for metacentric height (GM), righting lever (GZ), severe wind and rolling, free surfaces, icing and watertight integrity. This overview is not a complete checklist; map each requirement to the vessel’s actual scope.

For applicable bulk carriers and oil tankers, check the IACS Common Structural Rules (CSR). IACS states that formerly separate bulk-carrier and oil-tanker rules were harmonized into one set and are maintained over time. Also identify relevant IACS Unified Requirements (UR). Member societies incorporate UR after ratification and may impose more stringent provisions, so the UR text alone does not establish the complete rule set for a particular society.

Design-basis item Why it changes the review Evidence to retain
Vessel type and cargo Changes load cases, structural details, subdivision and stability criteria. Approved particulars, capacity plan and cargo description.
Flag and class Determines statutory interpretations, class rules, submissions and approval authority. Flag correspondence, class agreement and rule list.
Operating area Can introduce environmental, icing, wind, wave or restricted-service requirements. Operating-area statement and environmental design data.
Design stage Sets the expected accuracy of weights, scantlings, details and deliverables. Design-stage plan and revision status.
Contract date Some SOLAS requirements use a date threshold. Contract record and applicable statutory edition.
Rule edition and amendments Different editions can change formulas, acceptance criteria and required analyses. Controlled rule register with effective dates.

2. Build a requirement matrix instead of relying on a generic checklist

Create a matrix that assigns every requirement to a responsible person, model input, calculation and approval output. Mark each item as applicable, not applicable with justification, or awaiting an authority decision.

Review domain Typical questions Typical evidence
Structural strength Are global hull girder and local members adequate for every rule-required condition? Scantling calculations, load cases, direct calculations or finite-element analysis, drawings and utilization summaries.
Subdivision and damage stability Do compartments, damage assumptions and survivability meet the applicable standard? Subdivision plan, permeability assumptions, damage cases and stability reports.
Intact stability Are GM, GZ, severe-wind and rolling criteria met in operating conditions? Loading-condition files, hydrostatics, cross-curves and intact-stability results.
Freeboard and openings Are assigned freeboards, closing appliances and opening locations consistent with the Load Line requirements? Freeboard calculation, line plan, opening schedule and closing-appliance drawings.
Watertight integrity Are bulkheads, decks, doors, hatches, vents and penetrations located and rated correctly? Watertight plan, penetration details, door schedule and test records.
Materials and fabrication Do grades, corrosion additions, weld details and construction tolerances match the rules? Material certificates, welding details, corrosion model and yard specifications.
Operational assumptions Can the crew load, ballast, consume fuel and operate within the analyzed envelope? Loading manual, stability information, ballast procedure and limits of operation.

Do not mark an item “passed” merely because the software contains a calculation module. Record the rule clause, input revision, analyst, date, result and any authority comment.

3. Establish model control and data provenance

Use one controlled geometry and identify its revision

Confirm that the submitted 3D model is the same configuration represented by drawings and calculations. Lock a model identifier, revision, coordinate system, units and reference datums. Export a read-only review copy and preserve the native file under configuration control.

Audit geometry and scantlings

  • Check shell, decks, bulkheads, longitudinals, frames, pillars, brackets, openings and penetrations for gaps, overlaps, duplicate surfaces and disconnected members.
  • Verify plate thicknesses, stiffener sizes, web and flange dimensions, material grades, corrosion additions and orientation against the scantling list.
  • Confirm that molded dimensions, reference points and compartment boundaries agree with the hydrostatic and structural models.
  • Check that watertight and non-watertight attributes are assigned correctly; a visual surface does not prove a boundary is watertight.

Reconcile weights and centers of gravity

Compare lightship, deadweight groups, equipment, machinery, liquids, stores, personnel and cargo against the weight estimate. Reconcile longitudinal, transverse and vertical centers of gravity and document uncertainty margins. A stability result is only as reliable as the mass properties behind it.

Trace every result

Each table, contour or utilization value should identify the model revision, load-case identifier, material database, boundary conditions, solver version and rule formula. If a result cannot be reproduced from the controlled inputs, treat it as an unverified indication rather than compliance evidence.

4. Check global hull strength and local structure

Start with global load paths

Review still-water bending moments, shear forces, torsion and any rule-prescribed wave loads for the operating and design conditions. Confirm continuity of the strength deck, side shell, bottom, inner bottom, longitudinal bulkheads and major girders. Look for abrupt changes in stiffness, cut-outs, terminations and transitions near machinery spaces, cargo openings and tank boundaries.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check local members and connections

Assess plates, stiffeners, frames, floors, girders, pillars, brackets, hatch corners, knuckles, end connections and penetrations under the actual pressure, cargo, racking, sloshing, vibration and concentrated loads that apply. Review corrosion additions and renewal thickness assumptions separately from as-built thickness.

Use direct analysis when the rules require it

Selected rules may require finite-element analysis or another direct calculation for areas such as large openings, complex grillages, unusual arrangements, high-strength steel transitions or novel structural concepts. Define mesh idealization, element quality, material properties, supports, load application and acceptance criteria before interpreting the output.

A colored stress plot is not proof of compliance. Check mesh convergence or sensitivity where appropriate, reaction balance, load-path realism, boundary-condition effects, hot-spot treatment, buckling modes and fatigue detail categories. Confirm that the analyzed load cases correspond to the rule cases and the vessel’s actual operation. Document why omitted load cases are outside scope.

Review continuity and buildability together

Structural safety can be lost at details that look acceptable in a global model. Inspect weld access, bracket toes, scallops, drain holes, cut-out radii, alignment, backing bars, distortion control and inspection access. Ensure that the production model does not silently replace an approved detail with a thinner plate, a shorter bracket or an unapproved opening.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Check intact stability, subdivision and damage stability

Verify hydrostatics first

Validate displacement, buoyancy, hydrostatic curves, waterplane properties, centers of buoyancy and flotation, and tank-volume curves against independent calculations or approved particulars. Investigate discontinuities caused by bad surfaces, incorrect compartment limits or unit errors before running stability criteria.

Run representative intact loading conditions

Include the conditions required by the applicable code and the vessel’s operating profile: departure and arrival states, full and partial cargo, ballast, consumables at different levels, and any special service condition. Check GM and righting-lever curves, downflooding points, severe-wind and rolling criteria, trim, drafts and propeller immersion where relevant. Record the free-surface correction for every slack tank and verify that tank contents and density are realistic.

Check subdivision and damage cases where applicable

Confirm that compartment permeability, assumed damage extents, cross-flooding, progressive flooding, openings and residual stability match the governing statutory or class method. Check that doors, hatches, vents, air pipes, ducts and cable or pipe penetrations do not create an unmodeled downflooding path.

Connect stability results to operations

A design can pass a calculation yet be unsafe if the crew cannot reproduce the assumed loading. Compare the analyzed cases with the loading manual, ballast sequence, cargo securing plan, tank management and alarm limits. State prohibited combinations and minimum operating margins in documents that the crew will actually use.

6. Verify freeboard and watertight integrity

Use the assigned freeboard and the Load Line Convention requirements as a separate review stream, not as a by-product of the 3D model. Check sheer, deck-edge geometry, superstructure assumptions, openings, coamings, hatch covers, doors, ventilators, air pipes, scuppers and closing appliances.

For every opening, confirm its location, sill or coaming height, closing type, weathertight or watertight rating, drainage and operating procedure. Cross-check the opening schedule against the model and drawings. A missing attribute or an incorrectly classified door can invalidate a damage-stability result even when the geometry looks complete.

7. Consider dynamic stability in waves when the profile warrants it

The IMO’s second-generation intact-stability work addresses five potential failure modes in waves: dead ship condition, excessive acceleration, pure loss of stability, parametric rolling, and surf-riding or broaching. The cited IMO page describes the interim guidelines as non-mandatory and records their draft finalization by the Sub-Committee on Ship Design and Construction on 3–7 February 2020; confirm the current status and applicability with the flag administration.

Use specialist dynamic analysis when vessel form, speed, route, cargo, operational restrictions or a class notation makes these phenomena credible. Define the wave environment, speed range, heading, loading condition and acceptance criteria. Do not present a dynamic-stability screen as a universal requirement, and do not treat an optional software module as an approval in itself.

8. Choose the appropriate review route

Internal engineering verification and external class or administration review serve different purposes. A project may need both.

Comparison axis Internal engineering verification External classification or administration review
Authority Company design basis, contract specification and selected rules. Flag statutory instruments and the chosen society’s approved rules and interpretations.
Independence May be performed by the design team or an independent internal checker. Performed by the authority or its recognized classification route.
Inputs and evidence Can use native models, scripts, prototypes and sensitivity studies. Requires the formats, calculations, drawings and declarations specified by the authority.
Timing Useful from concept through production and change review. Follows the society’s submission gates and statutory survey or approval schedule.
Output Engineering findings, risk register, design changes and release recommendation. Plan approval, comments, class status or statutory certification when requirements are met.
Change control Project configuration system and independent checking procedure. Formal resubmission or approval of changes when they affect an accepted design.

One concrete model-based example is DNV’s 3D model approval workflow using OCX design models. DNV describes a process in which the model is submitted, review and rule calculations are performed, and feedback is returned; it states that OCX delivery is a prerequisite for that platform. This demonstrates one class workflow, not a universal format or approval route for every vessel, society or jurisdiction.

9. Follow a controlled review sequence

  1. Issue the design-basis record. Obtain written confirmation of vessel scope, flag, class, service, operating area, stage, contract date and rule editions.
  2. Open the requirement matrix. Assign each structural, stability, subdivision, freeboard, watertight and operational requirement to an owner and deliverable.
  3. Baseline the model. Freeze geometry, scantlings, materials, equipment, openings, compartments, weights, centers of gravity, units and coordinate systems under a revision number.
  4. Perform model QA. Find disconnected geometry, duplicate entities, incorrect attributes, missing openings, unit errors and mismatches with drawings.
  5. Reconcile mass properties. Compare model weights and centers with the weight estimate and identify margins or uncertain items.
  6. Generate rule load cases. Include global, local, tank, cargo, sloshing, racking, wave and operational cases required by the selected rules.
  7. Run structural checks. Review global strength, local scantlings, buckling, connections and direct analyses where required. Record assumptions and acceptance criteria.
  8. Run hydrostatic and stability checks. Validate hydrostatics, intact conditions, free surfaces, subdivision and damage cases, then compare results with operational procedures.
  9. Check openings and watertight boundaries. Reconcile the 3D model, opening schedule, freeboard calculations, door and hatch arrangements, penetrations and test requirements.
  10. Perform specialist checks. Add dynamic-stability, fatigue, vibration, fire, machinery or electrical assessments when the vessel scope or authority requires them.
  11. Close findings through configuration control. Assign each discrepancy, identify the affected model objects and calculations, implement the change, rerun dependent cases and preserve the approval trail.
  12. Submit the agreed package. Provide the authority’s required model format, drawings, calculations, declarations and revision history; obtain written resolution of interpretations before release.

10. Diagnose common failure modes

Symptom Likely cause Corrective action
Unexpectedly high or low displacement Open surfaces, wrong density, duplicate geometry or omitted tanks. Validate watertight volumes, units, materials and compartment closure against an independent hydrostatic check.
Large stability change after a minor edit Weight, center-of-gravity or free-surface attribute changed with the geometry. Compare mass-property and tank-state diffs between revisions; rerun all affected loading cases.
Stress hot spots at supports Over-constrained boundary conditions, point loads or poor mesh idealization. Check reactions and load paths, refine the model and justify any stress classification or averaging method.
Rule result cannot be reproduced Uncontrolled model revision, hidden software defaults or missing input files. Archive the native model, exported model, solver settings, material data, scripts and rule clause with the result.
Damage case floods an unexpected space Incorrect watertight attribute, door state, vent path or penetration. Trace the flooding route in the compartment model and reconcile it with the watertight plan and opening schedule.
Class comment appears after production drawings Design gate was skipped or a rule interpretation was assumed. Escalate the interpretation to the society or flag early, then assess all downstream drawings and calculations.

11. Assemble an auditable deliverable

A reviewer should be able to start with any conclusion and work backward to the exact geometry, assumption and rule requirement. Retain:

  • Design-basis record, rule register and applicability decisions.
  • Native and exchange-format model files with revision, coordinate system and units.
  • Geometry, scantling, material, equipment, opening, compartment and weight schedules.
  • Hydrostatic, intact-stability, damage-stability, freeboard and watertight-integrity reports.
  • Global-strength, local-scantling, buckling, fatigue or finite-element files where required.
  • Load-case definitions, boundary conditions, solver settings, convergence or sensitivity evidence and acceptance criteria.
  • Issue register showing owner, disposition, rerun status and authority response.
  • Change log linking every approved modification to affected drawings, models, calculations and operational documents.

Use independent checking for safety-critical inputs and calculations. Keep the release package read-only and identify superseded files so a yard or surveyor cannot unknowingly build from an obsolete result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

12. Know what the model cannot certify

A digital model cannot establish compliance when its inputs are wrong, its boundaries are unrealistic, its rule edition is unidentified or its results are not traceable. Nor can it replace surveys, material certification, welding inspection, pressure or hose tests, commissioning checks, load tests, inclining experiments or operational verification required by the applicable authority.

The IMO explicitly states that it does not test or approve products for marine use; that responsibility belongs to the national maritime administration of the ship’s flag. The same principle applies to model formats and software outputs: they support an approval process, but they do not themselves issue statutory certification. Ask the flag administration and selected classification society to confirm the required analyses, interpretations, model exchange format, survey points and approval documents for this vessel.

13. Final release decision

Release the design for the next stage only when the applicable requirements are identified, the controlled model matches the calculations, structural and stability findings are closed or formally accepted, and the authority has confirmed any outstanding interpretation. If a requirement is uncertain, record the uncertainty and obtain a written decision rather than silently choosing a convenient rule.
