How to Check a Company’s Shareholding Pattern and Depository Filings on NSE and BSE

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To check a company’s shareholding pattern, start with the official exchange filing page, select the correct issuer and security, then choose the row whose As on Date matches the period you need. On NSE, record the submission date, any revision date and status before downloading the CSV or opening the detailed Regulation 31 filing. On BSE, use the exchange’s Shareholding Patterns corporate-filings page and verify the reporting period in the document itself. For depository information, inspect the detailed filing’s separate fields for shares underlying depository receipts and dematerialised shares; neither field is the same as an investor’s personal depository-account statement.

What a shareholding-pattern filing tells you

A shareholding pattern is a dated ownership snapshot filed by a listed issuer. It normally separates promoter and promoter-group holdings, public shareholders, employee trusts where applicable, and non-promoter or non-public categories. The filing can also show the number of shareholders, fully paid and partly paid shares, total shares, percentage ownership, voting rights, outstanding convertible securities, diluted shareholding, locked-in shares, pledged or otherwise encumbered shares, and dematerialised holdings.

The snapshot is not a live register. A percentage can move because the shareholder’s number of shares changed, because the company’s total outstanding shares changed, or because both changed. A later submission or revision date can correct an earlier period without representing a new quarter. For that reason, every note or spreadsheet should preserve the issuer, security, reporting date, submission date, revision status and the source document.

Where to find the official filing

SEBI’s Corporate Filings directory is a useful starting index. Under Shareholding Patterns, it points to the NSE Corporate Filings Shareholding Patterns page and to BSE’s Shareholding Patterns corporate-filings page (the BSE route is identified as Sharehold_Searchnew.aspx in the directory). Follow the exchange on which the issuer is listed. If the company is listed on both exchanges, check both records and confirm that the period and version are the same before treating any display difference as meaningful.

The directory establishes the official routes, but the available source material does not establish that BSE currently has the same filters, CSV controls, XBRL conversion or revision labels as NSE. Use the live BSE page for the current interface and rely on the filed document for the definitive fields.

How to check a company’s shareholding pattern on NSE

1. Open the Shareholding Patterns filing page

Use NSE’s corporate-filings shareholding-pattern page rather than an unauthorised data mirror. The page provides a company-name or symbol search and displays an equity or SME context. If the issuer has similarly named entities or more than one security, confirm the legal issuer name and the exchange symbol before selecting a result.

2. Search for the correct issuer and security

  1. Enter the company name or NSE symbol.
  2. Confirm that the result is the intended legal issuer, not a similarly named company.
  3. Check whether the result is an equity main-board listing or an SME listing.
  4. If the company has more than one listed security, select the class relevant to your analysis.

Do not infer that a familiar brand name is sufficient identification. Your notes should contain the legal issuer name, symbol, exchange and security class shown by the filing page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Select the filing by reporting date, not simply by the newest row

NSE’s results table distinguishes several dates and fields. The key field is As on Date, which identifies the period-end ownership snapshot. Submission Date records when the issuer submitted the filing. A REVISION DATE, when shown, identifies a later correction or update to an earlier submission. The table may also show a status such as Revised.

Field on the NSE results table How to use it
As on Date Match this to the quarter or half-year you are analysing. It is the reporting period, not the date on which the file appeared online.
Submission Date Record when the issuer submitted the filing. A later submission date does not automatically mean a later ownership period.
Revision Date Use it to identify a corrected version of an earlier period. Keep the revised version and note that it supersedes the original where the portal indicates this.
Status Check for labels such as revised or other portal status indicators before extracting figures.

A row submitted in a later month can still relate to an earlier quarter. Conversely, the newest row may be a revision rather than the next period’s filing. Select by As on Date, then use submission and revision information to establish which version is current.

  • One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips

4. Open the detail view and preserve the source

Open the filing detail or attachment for the selected row. Save the source file or record the exact page location, issuer, reporting date and access date. A practical citation note is: issuer; exchange; Regulation 31 filing; as-on date; submission date; revision date or status; accessed 17 October 2026. This lets another reader distinguish an original filing from a later correction.

5. Download the summary or convert XBRL when needed

NSE offers a CSV download for the results table and an option to convert XBRL data into Excel. The CSV is useful for building a period index or screening several issuers. It is not necessarily the complete filing: a summary row may omit a named shareholder, a depository-receipt amount, an encumbrance detail or the denominator needed for a particular calculation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the summary does not contain the field you need, use the detailed attachment or XBRL filing. NSE’s XBRL resources identify Regulation 31 shareholding pattern resources and provide downloadable XBRL and taxonomy material. Inspect the actual filing before quoting a share count, named holder, depository-receipt amount or pledge figure.

How to check a shareholding pattern on BSE

Open BSE’s official Shareholding Patterns corporate-filings page identified in SEBI’s Corporate Filings directory and search for the issuer. Confirm the legal name, security and reporting period in the result and in the attached document. The source material available for this guide does not document BSE’s current search filters, export buttons or revision display, so avoid assuming that a click path or download option is identical to NSE’s.

BSE-hosted issuer documents can be explicitly labelled as a Regulation 31(b) shareholding pattern and can include depository-receipt information. Treat the attachment as the controlling record for field-level analysis. If the issuer is listed on both exchanges, compare the As on Date and version before comparing percentages. Different portal timestamps or date formatting alone do not prove a different ownership position.

Reading the detailed Regulation 31 filing

The detailed format goes beyond a promoter-versus-public split. Use the headings in the filed document rather than trying to reconstruct categories from a headline percentage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Field or section What it represents Analytical caution
Shareholder category or name The classification and, where disclosed, the shareholder or holder name. Category labels must be retained when comparing periods; a name alone does not establish beneficial ownership beyond the filing’s disclosure.
Number of shareholders Count of holders in the relevant row or category. A change in holder count is not the same as a change in shares held.
Fully paid shares Shares paid in full. Keep separate from partly paid shares when reconciling totals.
Partly paid shares Shares that are not fully paid. Do not silently add them to fully paid shares if the filing reports them separately.
Shares underlying depository receipts Shares represented by depository receipts, where applicable. This is a specific filing field, not a synonym for all dematerialised shares.
Total shares The filed total for the relevant holder or category. Use the issuer’s filed denominator when explaining percentages.
Shareholding percentage Ownership percentage calculated in the filing. Check whether the denominator changed between periods.
Voting rights Voting-right information associated with the holding. Voting rights can require separate interpretation where securities have different rights.
Outstanding convertible securities Convertible instruments outstanding at the reporting date. Do not treat an instrument as an issued share unless the filing does so.
Diluted shareholding Percentage after the filing’s treatment of outstanding convertibles or other dilution. Compare diluted figures only with the same diluted measure in another period.
Locked-in shares Shares subject to a lock-in identified by the filing. A lock-in is a transfer restriction, not automatically a pledge.
Pledged or encumbered shares Shares reported as pledged or otherwise encumbered. Use the filing’s exact wording; do not assume every encumbrance is a pledge.
Dematerialised shares Shares held in dematerialised form. Dematerialised status does not mean the shares are depository receipts.

The format also has designated sections for promoter and promoter group, public shareholders, non-promoter and non-public shareholders, and custodian or depository-receipt holders. If a row is blank, nil, unavailable or attributed to a custodian, report that condition exactly. Do not infer a beneficial owner or assume that a blank means zero unless the filing states zero.

Depository receipts, dematerialised holdings and personal account records

Shares underlying depository receipts are shares represented by a receipt structure, such as an international or Indian depository-receipt arrangement, when the issuer’s filing reports them. They appear in a dedicated field or holder section. Dematerialised shares are electronic holdings recorded in the market’s dematerialised system; they can include ordinary shares that are not depository receipts.

These concepts should not be conflated:

  • A dematerialised-share figure is not automatically a depository-receipt figure.
  • A depository-receipt row does not establish that every investor in the company owns receipts.
  • A company’s quarterly Regulation 31 filing is not an individual investor’s depository-participant statement, transaction history or account ledger.
  • If the filing names a custodian or reports a nil amount, reproduce that disclosure rather than assigning the holding to an unidentified beneficial owner.

The detailed format and an issuer filing hosted by BSE demonstrate where depository-receipt information can appear. A 2015 SEBI circular also discusses the quarterly holding-pattern format and Indian Depository Receipt compliance, but that historical circular should not be treated as a complete statement of current requirements. Verify current regulations and amendments before making a compliance assertion.

How to compare two periods without creating a false trend

Build a comparison table before interpreting movement. Compare the same issuer and security, the same reporting-date convention and the same categories. Keep raw share counts beside percentages so that a change in the denominator is visible.

Column to capture Why it belongs in the comparison
Period-end or As on Date Defines the ownership snapshot being compared.
Submission Date Shows when the issuer filed each snapshot.
Revision status and Revision Date Prevents an original and corrected version from being treated as separate periods.
Promoter and promoter-group share count Shows the numerator behind the reported percentage.
Promoter and promoter-group percentage Shows the filed ownership proportion.
Public share count and percentage Allows a complete comparison with promoter holdings.
Employee-trust category, where present Preserves a category that may otherwise be hidden in a broad summary.
Shares underlying depository receipts Shows whether the dedicated receipt field is populated and how it changes.
Diluted percentage, where relevant Separates current ownership from the filing’s diluted measure.
Pledged or encumbered totals Tracks reported security interests separately from ownership.

For each movement, ask two questions: did the share count change, and did the total-share denominator change? A stable share count can produce a lower percentage after an issue of new shares. A percentage change with an unchanged denominator may indicate a change in the holder’s shares. The filing’s own totals and footnotes should control the explanation.

Filing cadence and deadlines

NSE’s current main-board compliance calendar states that Regulation 31(1)(b) shareholding patterns are due within 21 days from the end of each quarter. The same calendar separately describes a half-year submission cadence for entities listed on the SME Exchange. The 21-day statement is a calendar requirement as accessed on 17 October 2026, not individualized legal advice.

Before quoting a deadline or alleging that an issuer filed late, verify the live NSE calendar, current SEBI regulations and circulars, the issuer’s listing category, the relevant quarter or half-year and any rule change applicable to the period. The filing’s submission date should be assessed against the rule in force for that issuer and period, not against a remembered deadline.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Using the newest filing without checking the As on Date

Problem: A later upload is treated as a later quarter. Correction: Select the period by As on Date, then check submission, revision and status fields.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating a revised filing as a new period

Problem: A correction is counted as a fresh ownership observation. Correction: Keep one row for the reporting period and mark the corrected version with its revision date.

Relying only on a CSV summary

Problem: A summary table is used to quote a field it does not contain. Correction: Open the detailed filing or XBRL-to-Excel output and cite the actual field.

Calling dematerialised shares depository receipts

Problem: Electronic holdings are described as receipts. Correction: Use the separate shares underlying depository receipts and dematerialised shares fields.

Comparing unlike securities or categories

Problem: An equity main-board figure is compared with an SME, different class or differently grouped category. Correction: Confirm issuer, exchange, security class, listing context and category labels first.

Assuming a blank means zero

Problem: An empty or unavailable cell is converted into a numerical zero. Correction: Report blank, nil, unavailable or custodian-attributed exactly as the filing presents it.

Confusing a company filing with a personal depository account

Problem: A public shareholding pattern is treated as an investor’s transaction record. Correction: Use the exchange filing for issuer-level ownership and the investor’s authorised depository channel for private account information.

A reproducible recordkeeping checklist

Use this checklist whenever you download or cite a filing:

  • Official exchange route used: NSE or BSE.
  • Legal issuer name and exchange symbol.
  • Security class and equity or SME context.
  • As on Date and the period it represents.
  • Submission Date, broadcast time if displayed, and Revision Date.
  • Status, including any revised label.
  • Source file, attachment reference or portal location.
  • Access date, including 17 October 2026 when that is the date of retrieval.
  • Raw share counts and percentages for each category being compared.
  • Shares underlying depository receipts, dematerialised shares, diluted figures and encumbrances where relevant.
  • Any footnote explaining a change in denominator, category or security.

This record makes the result auditable when a portal later displays a revised row or changes its interface.

What a careful conclusion can and cannot say

You can state which categories the issuer reported, how many shares and what percentages appeared on a specified as-on date, whether the exchange marked the row as revised, and how the figures changed against a like-for-like prior filing. You cannot turn a blank depository-receipt field into a claim that no receipts exist outside the filed scope, or turn a company-level filing into a statement about an individual investor’s account. Keep conclusions tied to the filed period, the named field and the version you preserved.
