Check the model in the Ring app before removing anything—especially because Video Doorbell 2 and Video Doorbell (2nd Generation) use different battery designs.
Check your Ring Doorbell model first
In the Ring app, open the device menu or the three-dot menu on the doorbell tile, then select Settings and Device Health. Look under Device Details for the exact product name. Device Health also shows the battery percentage, power source and connection status.

How to change a removable Ring Doorbell battery
- Remove the security screw. Use the supplied security screwdriver to remove the small screw at the bottom of the faceplate.
- Take off the faceplate. Press inward on both sides of the faceplate or cover, then pull it away from the doorbell. Do not force it with a knife or ordinary screwdriver.
- Release the battery. Press the metal battery-release tab.
- Slide out the pack. Pull the Quick Release Battery Pack out of its compartment. It is designed to slide out after the release tab is pressed; do not pry it from the front or pull on wires.
- Charge the pack. Connect the correct charging cable directly to the battery. Ring says a full charge can take up to 10 hours. For a Quick Release Battery Pack, charging is complete when the amber light is no longer illuminated and only the green light remains. Charging indicators can vary by model and cable, so follow the model-specific manual if its instructions differ.
- Reinsert the charged pack. Align the pack with the compartment and slide it in firmly until it clicks. This click is an important checkpoint: a pack that is not fully seated may not be detected or may show the old charge level.
- Replace the faceplate. Align the faceplate and press it into place until it clicks.
- Replace the security screw. Reinstall the original screw at the bottom.
- Wait for startup. Allow up to 60 seconds for the doorbell to power back on.
- Verify the result. Open Device Health in the Ring app and check the battery percentage and Wi-Fi status.
The full procedure is covered in Ring’s official charging instructions.

- After reinsertion, wait up to 60 seconds for the doorbell to restart.
- Open the Ring app and go to Settings > Device Health.
- Confirm that the battery percentage has changed.
- Check that the doorbell is connected to Wi-Fi. A charged device can still be offline.
If the percentage remains unchanged, refresh Device Health and confirm that the removable pack clicked fully into place. Ring notes that the app may not update until the battery is correctly installed and the doorbell has reconnected.

If the Ring battery will not charge
Work through these checks in order:
- Test the wall outlet with another device.
- Try a different charging cable.
- Try another USB power adapter.
- Confirm that the connector matches your model and battery pack.
- Inspect the charging port for dirt, debris or visible damage. Do not insert sharp objects.
- For a removable pack, remove and reseat it until it clicks.
- Allow time for the app to reconnect and refresh the battery status.
- Contact Ring support if the pack or doorbell remains unresponsive.
Ring recommends a power source with a minimum output of 1 amp and advises starting with outlet and cable checks. See its battery-performance troubleshooting guide.

If the doorbell is charged but offline
Battery level and network connection are separate issues. In the Ring app, open Device Health. If the doorbell is offline, use the Wi-Fi reconnection control and follow the app’s prompts. A battery swap will not repair a weak or lost Wi-Fi connection.

- Get an extra rechargeable battery pack so you'll always have backup power ready to go.
- Works with Ring Video Doorbell 2, Video Doorbell 3, Video Doorbell 3 Plus, Video Doorbell 4, Battery Doorbell Plus, Battery Doorbell Pro, Stick Up Cam Battery/Solar (all gens), Stick Up Cam Pro Battery/Solar, Spotlight Cam Battery/Solar, Spotlight Cam Plus Battery/Solar/Wired, Spotlight Cam Pro Battery/Solar/Wired, Peephole Cam, Solar Floodlight.

Unusually fast drain can result from heavy motion activity, frequent Live View use, weak Wi-Fi, cold weather, high sensitivity, large motion zones, incomplete charging, an aging battery or insufficient sunlight at a solar installation. Battery life varies by model, settings, weather and activity, so there is no reliable universal “lasts X months” figure.
Should you buy a spare battery?
Charging the existing pack is the simplest and least expensive option if occasional downtime is acceptable. A second compatible pack is more useful when you need the doorbell operating while the depleted pack charges indoors.
- Standard Quick Release Battery Pack: Compatible with models such as Video Doorbell 2, 3, 3 Plus, 4 and the original Battery Doorbell. Ring’s US store listed it at $34.99 when observed; check the official product page for current price and availability.
- Quick Release Ultra Battery Pack: Intended for newer compatible models, including Battery Doorbell Plus (2nd Gen) and Battery Doorbell Pro (2nd Gen), according to Ring’s compatibility information. Do not substitute it for a standard pack without checking compatibility.
- Charging Station: Useful for households that regularly rotate removable packs. Ring listed the station at $39.99 and a station-plus-two-pack bundle at $89.99 when observed. Prices and availability change.
- Solar charging: Consider it only if your model has a compatible solar accessory and the panel will receive adequate sunlight. Shade, dirt, winter conditions, orientation and high activity can limit the trickle charge.
- Plug-in or hardwired power: A compatible adapter or hardwiring can reduce how often the device must be removed. Ring describes hardwiring a battery-powered doorbell as providing a trickle charge, not necessarily eliminating all battery maintenance.
Check Ring’s compatibility list before buying any pack, solar accessory or adapter. Generic listings may use similar names without being compatible.
Can you replace a built-in Ring battery yourself?
Not as a normal DIY procedure. Ring does not provide a consumer battery-cartridge replacement process for its built-in-battery models. Its safety guidance directs internal battery replacement to a qualified service provider and warns against opening or modifying the device. Contact Ring or Amazon support to discuss service, warranty or replacement options instead of forcing open the housing.
Safety precautions
- Do not pry, puncture, crush, open or modify a lithium-ion battery.
- Stop using a battery or doorbell that is swollen, damaged, wet or unusually hot.
- Keep a damaged battery away from heat and combustible materials, and contact Ring or Amazon support for safe handling guidance.
- Use only the supplied or correct model-specific security screw.
- Before touching existing doorbell wiring, switch off power at the breaker.
- Follow local electrical requirements and use a qualified electrician if you are unsure about hardwiring.
Ring’s safety information should take precedence over general battery advice.
Quick Recap
Final troubleshooting checklist
- Battery not detected: Confirm the model, press the release tab correctly, reseat the pack until it clicks, wait 60 seconds and refresh Device Health.
- Doorbell still offline: Check Wi-Fi separately and reconnect it through the Ring app.
- Doorbell will not stay on the mount: Check that the bracket latch is engaged and use the correct security screw. On Battery Doorbell (2nd Gen), Ring says a stuck latch can be released by inserting the supplied removal tool into the side slot and gently wiggling until it clicks.
- Battery drains immediately: Check charging completion, motion activity, Live View use, Wi-Fi strength, temperature and battery age.
- Battery looks damaged: Stop using it. Do not repair or open it; contact Ring or Amazon support.
