For most battery-powered Blink cameras, replace the cells with two AA 1.5 V lithium non-rechargeable batteries, aligning the + and − marks in the compartment. The cover release depends on the model: Outdoor 4 uses a screw and pry point, Video Doorbell models use a latch or release key, XT/XT2 use a sliding switch, and Indoor (1st Gen) has a bottom latch. Blink Mini is USB-powered and does not need battery changes.
Before you open the camera
- Identify the model. Check the Blink app or the device label. The release mechanism differs by camera, and Blink Mini is USB-powered rather than battery-powered.
- Use the recommended cells. Blink recommends two size AA 1.5 V lithium non-rechargeable batteries, such as Energizer Ultimate or an equivalent. Blink advises against alkaline, lithium-ion, and rechargeable batteries in its battery guidance.
- Have the right opening method ready. Outdoor 4 includes an opening tool; if it is missing, Blink says a coin or large screwdriver can turn the cover screw. Do not force a cover before locating its model-specific release.
Change batteries by Blink camera model
Blink Outdoor 4
- Turn the back-cover screw counterclockwise until it rotates freely.
- Use the included right-angle opening tool to gently pry at the opening point in one direction.
- Remove the old cells and insert two new AA batteries, matching the + and − marks.
- Align the cover post with the keyhole beside the USB port and press the cover into place.
- Turn the screw clockwise about three turns, stopping when the cover is flush.
Blink Video Doorbell
Use the release that matches the back plate fitted to your doorbell:
- Gray-latch style: Release the gray latch at the bottom of the back cover.
- Release-key style: Insert the release key into the slot at the bottom to detach the doorbell from its mounting plate.
With the battery compartment open, replace the two AA lithium cells, matching the polarity marks. Refit and secure the cover, then remount the doorbell according to its mounting instructions. If your doorbell is connected to wiring, live current may be present at the contact posts. For the two-hole plate, Blink instructs users to switch off doorbell-chime power at the breaker before removing the doorbell.
Blink XT and XT2
- Hold the camera with its back facing you.
- Slide and hold the gray switch in the direction of its arrow while pulling the battery cover upward with your thumb. The seal can make the cover tight.
- Replace the cells with their positive and negative ends aligned to the compartment marks, then reinstall the cover.
Blink Indoor (1st Gen)
Release the back cover using the latch on the bottom of the camera. Replace the batteries with the polarity aligned to the marks, then close the cover.

Check the camera after replacing the cells
Check the battery indication in the Blink app. Blink says it may display “OK” or “Needs Replacement”; a “High Usage” alert can indicate settings that use more battery than normal. If the camera remains offline, check network connectivity before concluding that the new batteries are the cause.
How long Blink batteries last—and what affects that
Blink says battery life of up to two years is expected under default settings. That is an estimate, not a guarantee: settings, frequency of use, heat, cold, slow internet, and a weak Wi-Fi or Sync Module signal can shorten battery life.

For context, Blink lists the Outdoor 4 operating temperature range as −4 to 113°F (−20 to 45°C). That is the camera’s operating specification, not a claim that battery performance stays the same throughout that range.

Some battery-powered Blink cameras with a USB port can also use USB power. Blink’s USB instructions specify a 5 V/1 A adapter. Removing a port cover can compromise outdoor weather resistance, and Blink does not support third-party power solutions. USB power may also affect the battery indicator. Check your specific model’s instructions before using an accessory; power options are not universal.
