Switch off the multitool and disconnect its power before touching the blade: remove the battery from a cordless tool or unplug a corded one. Wear protective gloves, then follow the release and installation instructions for your exact model. Oscillating multitools use different blade-release mechanisms, so one model’s steps are not universal.
Before changing the blade
Make the tool safe before you handle its accessory. Bosch’s GOP 12V-28 operating instructions, dated November 20, 2024, say to remove the battery before maintenance or a tool change because an unintended press of the on/off switch can cause injury. Worx gives the corresponding instruction to unplug its cited WX686L corded tool before changing the blade.

- Switch the tool off.
- Disconnect its power source. Remove the battery from a cordless tool or unplug a corded tool, as applicable to your model.
- Put on protective gloves. Bosch warns that touching accessories can cause injury. Keep your fingers clear of the blade’s cutting edge while removing or fitting it.
- Check the manual for your exact model. Find the accessory interface and the instructions for releasing and securing a blade before proceeding.
Identify the release mechanism
There is no single blade-change sequence for every oscillating multitool. Manufacturer instructions show several designs, including a snap-in release, a clamping lever, and a wrench-operated flange. Identify the mechanism on your tool rather than assuming that a blade or release method shown for another model will fit.

|---|---|---|
| Bosch GOP18V-40N | Snap-in accessory attachment with a toolless release lever | Bosch describes the lever as allowing no-touch blade release. Consult this model’s instructions for the complete removal and installation procedure. |
| Worx WX686L | Onboard clip-in wrench | Worx instructs users to unplug the tool, turn the wrench counterclockwise to release the flange, and turn it clockwise to secure the replacement. |
| Worx WX697L | Accessory clamping lever | The cited Worx instructions identify a lever-operated clamp. Follow that model’s instructions; do not substitute the WX686L wrench steps. |
These are examples of model-specific designs, not a compatibility chart for other tools. A lever, wrench, or snap-in system may look familiar but still require different instructions.

How to change the blade
- Confirm the tool is off and disconnected. Remove the battery or unplug the cord before approaching the accessory mount.
- Locate the model’s blade-change instructions. Use the manual for the exact tool model to identify its release control, interface, and securing method.
- Release the existing blade as directed. Operate the tool’s release lever, clamp, or wrench only as specified. For the Worx WX686L, the support instructions specify turning the onboard wrench counterclockwise to release the flange. That direction is not a universal rule.
- Remove the blade carefully. Wear protective gloves and keep your fingers clear of the cutting edge while taking the accessory off. Do not force a blade or improvise with a release mechanism.
- Check that the replacement is listed as compatible with your tool. Match the accessory interface—not just the blade’s general name—and make sure the blade is intended for the material and task.
- Fit and secure the replacement according to the manual. Align and lock the accessory using the tool’s stated procedure. For the cited Worx WX686L instructions, turn the wrench clockwise to secure the blade; use the corresponding model-specific direction for other tools.
- Reconnect power only after the blade is secured. If the accessory does not sit or lock as the manual describes, disconnect power again and check the model and fit rather than testing a loose blade.
Choose a compatible replacement
Compatibility depends on the tool’s accessory interface and the blade’s intended application. Bosch’s GOP 12V-28 manual lists Starlock accessory examples for wood, metal, and multi-material uses. Those examples describe accessories for that documented interface; they do not establish that a Starlock blade fits every oscillating multitool.
- Check the manual or manufacturer’s compatibility information for the exact tool model.
- Verify the interface is listed for the tool; a blade described for an oscillating multitool is not automatically compatible with every mount.
- Choose a blade intended for the material and task. Bosch’s manual includes examples for wood, metal, and multi-material work.
- If fit is uncertain, do not force the accessory into place. Recheck the tool and blade specifications before reconnecting power.
If the blade will not release or secure
- The release method is unclear: stop and consult the exact model’s manual. The documented Worx examples alone use different mechanisms, and Bosch also documents a snap-in release on a separate model.
- The replacement does not appear to fit: verify the tool interface and the accessory’s stated compatibility. Do not infer fit from the blade’s intended material or from a similar-looking mount.
- The blade will not lock as described: keep the tool disconnected, remove the accessory if the manual permits, and repeat the model-specific installation steps. Do not reconnect power to test an unsecured blade.
Why the model manual matters
The safety principles are consistent—disconnect power, protect your hands, and secure the replacement before reconnecting—but release and installation details vary. Bosch’s GOP 12V-28 instructions address battery removal and gloves; Worx’s WX686L instructions specify its wrench and turning directions; Bosch’s GOP18V-40N documentation describes a different, toolless release. Use those examples only if they match your tool, and use your own model’s documentation for the actual blade change.
