To change a snow blower belt, first identify whether it is the auger belt or the wheel-drive belt, then follow the procedure and parts list for your exact model. Belt routing, access, tensioning, and shutdown steps vary; the instructions below are a safe orientation, not a substitute for your operator’s manual.
Identify which belt may have failed
The auger belt transfers power to the auger that gathers and moves snow. The drive or traction belt transfers power to the wheels or tracks. A snow blower that stops working does not automatically need a new belt: cable adjustment, shear bolts, or the friction wheel can also cause loss of auger or drive operation.
Signs to inspect the auger belt
Husqvarna lists weak performance, an auger that stops under light load, and an auger that does not rotate as possible signs of a worn or damaged auger belt. Treat these as reasons to inspect, not proof the belt is the cause. See Husqvarna’s battery snow blower auger-belt guidance.
Check other causes before replacing a belt
If an auger or drive control is lost, Troy-Bilt advises checking cable adjustment and inspecting the belts. If the belts look sound but the auger still does not work, a broken shear bolt may be responsible; if wheel drive is lost, the friction wheel is another possible cause. Find the correct replacement belt
Use the snow blower’s exact make and model—and serial number if the parts lookup requests it—to find the correct auger or drive belt. Consult the operator’s manual and parts list before buying; a belt that looks similar is not evidence of compatibility. If you are unsure, confirm the part with the manufacturer or an authorized parts supplier.
Specifications are model-specific. Champion lists belt part number 23096000085000A for model 100435 (060-3732-6) in its model-year 2017 auger-belt replacement article. The SP-SB044PW owner’s manual calls for an original factory replacement belt. Neither specification should be applied to a different model without checking its parts information.

Prepare the snow blower safely
Before removing a cover or touching a belt, park the machine on a stable surface and disable its power source exactly as its manual directs. The shutdown steps differ by model and power type.
- Gas models: The YARDMAX YB5765 manual directs users to shut off the engine, remove the key, disconnect the spark plug wire, and let the unit cool. Follow the instructions for your own machine in the YARDMAX YB5765 operator’s manual; do not assume another gas model has identical steps.
- Battery models: Husqvarna’s cited battery snow blower procedure calls for removing the safety key and batteries, then waiting at least 10 seconds before working. That timing applies to the described procedure, not every battery snow blower; consult your manual.
General belt replacement workflow
Access and belt routing vary enough that these steps are an overview, not a universal disassembly sequence. Read your model’s belt-replacement instructions before starting, and stop if the machine’s layout does not match them.

- Secure and isolate the machine. Use the model-specific shutdown procedure above and in the manual. Do not begin disassembly while the engine could start or the machine remains powered.
- Open only the specified access covers. Remove the belt cover and any other parts the manual identifies. Keep fasteners organized. Before moving the old belt, note or photograph its routing so you can compare it with the manual’s diagram.
- Relieve tension as directed. Move the idler or tensioner, or detach a spring, only as described for your model. For example, the cited Husqvarna battery procedure detaches the tensioner spring; that is not a universal method.
- Remove and replace the belt. Work the old belt off the pulleys without bending guides or forcing components. Fit the model-approved replacement along the prescribed route, then restore the tensioner, guides, and any parts removed for access.
- Reassemble and check adjustments. Reinstall every cover and guard, then check any belt or cable adjustment specified in the manual. Perform a functional check only as the manual directs, with guards installed and the machine configured as specified.
Why there is no single belt-changing procedure
Some machines expose the belt after removing a cover and moving a tensioner. Others require a bottom cover to be removed, guards to be loosened, or assemblies to be separated. Manuals also specify different belt routes and tensioning arrangements. For example, the battery-model steps in Husqvarna’s guidance, the gas-model shutdown procedure in the YARDMAX manual, and Champion’s procedure for model 100435 are not interchangeable.
Tools are model-dependent too. Champion lists a ratchet with an 18-inch extension, a size 10 wrench, and needle-nose pliers for its model 100435 procedure. Check your manual rather than treating that list as a general snow blower tool kit.

Before putting the snow blower back to work
- Confirm that the replacement belt matches the exact model and the correct system—auger or wheel drive.
- Check the manual’s belt routing, tensioner position, and cable adjustments.
- Make sure every belt guard and cover is back in place. Champion warns not to run its snow blower with the belt guard removed.
- If the belt does not track correctly, the tensioner or controls do not behave as specified, or the machine still will not operate, stop and consult the manual or a qualified service provider rather than forcing parts into position.
