Feed and pinch only while the plant is actively growing, then protect the crown or container from winter extremes. Whether a mum returns next year depends mainly on its cultivar, climate, planting date and winter protection.
Choose the right kind of mum
“Mum” can mean two very different plants. Garden mums are bred and selected for outdoor performance. Florist mums are commonly sold in full bloom as temporary gifts or decorations; many are not reliably hardy outdoors, especially where winters are cold.
| Type | Best use | Perennial expectations | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Garden mum | Planting in beds and borders | May return when the cultivar suits the climate and roots establish before winter | Healthy branching, numerous buds, no wilt, rot or pest damage |
| Florist mum | Short-term indoor or seasonal display | Unreliable outdoors in many cold climates | Do not assume a blooming pot is winter-hardy simply because it is labeled “chrysanthemum” |
Plant mums for strong roots and fall flowers
Choose the site
- Provide at least six hours of direct sun daily.
- Use soil that drains well yet holds steady moisture. In difficult soil, incorporate 2–3 inches of organic matter before planting.
- Keep plants 18–24 inches apart so air can circulate as they mature.
- Avoid locations exposed to outdoor lights at night. Chrysanthemums are short-day plants, and night lighting can delay or reduce flowering.
Plant at the right depth
Set the plant at the same depth it occupied in its nursery container. Water the planting area thoroughly so the root ball and surrounding soil are evenly moist. Spring or early-season planting gives roots more time to establish than a late-season purchase made just before frost.
Watering: deep, regular and directed at the soil
In beds
Keep soil evenly moist while a new plant establishes and during active growth, but never saturated. Check the soil rather than watering by the calendar; Utah State University Extension’s practical rule is to water when plants need it and never let them wilt. During a prolonged dry period, Iowa State University Extension reports that plants may need water about every 7–10 days. Apply enough to wet the root zone deeply, then allow excess to drain.
#1 Best Overall
- FALL COLOR: Beautiful hardy mums that are sure to brighten up your Fall garden!
- GROWTH: Mums grow up to about 24" tall with a spread of up to 24".
- CARE: Chrysanthemums will bloom best in full sun. They thrive in well-draining soil and require even, consistent moisture.
- FUN FACT: Mums colors can symbolize different meanings, such as love, sorrow, well wishes, etc., making them a great gift for different occasions!
- LIVE PLANTS: Our plants are grown exclusively for Deep Roots and The Three Company, shipped fresh directly from our greenhouse to you!
In containers
Pots dry faster than garden soil, so check them more often, particularly in sun, wind or hot weather. Water when the surface begins to dry and the plant shows no wilt, allowing excess to escape through the drainage holes. Do not let a container stand in a saucer of water.
Keep foliage dry
Apply water at soil level. Purdue University Extension advises keeping foliage dry because frequent wet leaves and frequent light watering can encourage disease and shallow roots. A mulch layer of about 2 inches helps conserve moisture in garden beds; keep mulch from pressing against stems.

Feed during active growth
Use a complete or slow-release fertilizer while the plant is producing leaves and stems. University of Florida IFAS recommends slow-release fertilizer. Utah State University Extension suggests one application about four weeks after planting and another later only if growth is weak. Follow the product label and local extension guidance for rates and timing.
Do not continue stimulating lush new growth late in the season where frost arrives early. Late fertilizer can leave tender growth vulnerable just as the plant should be preparing for dormancy.

Pinch, prune and deadhead at the right time
Pinching for a bushier plant
- When new shoots reach about 6 inches, pinch out the growing tips.
- Repeat every two to three weeks during the vegetative growth phase.
- Stop by mid-July as a general Arkansas Extension guideline; the correct cutoff varies with cultivar and local climate.
Stopping on time allows flower buds to form for autumn. Once fall buds are developing, stop routine tip pruning.
Light pruning and deadheading
Florida IFAS allows light pruning from late spring through mid-August when plants exceed about 6 inches. Remove spent flowers during bloom to encourage additional flowering, using clean snips and avoiding damage to unopened buds.

Prepare in-ground mums for winter
- Plant as early as practical so the root system can grow into surrounding soil before hard freezes.
- After the first hard frost, leave existing stems and foliage in place rather than cutting the plant to the ground immediately.
- In cold areas, add 3–4 inches of light, airy mulch over the crown, following Virginia Cooperative Extension guidance.
- Where freeze–thaw cycles heave soil, apply mulch after the soil has frozen through several cold events, as Purdue Extension advises.
Winter survival is not guaranteed for every cultivar or climate. The earlier a plant is established, the better its chance of resisting heaving and temperature stress, but hardiness still varies among varieties.

A pot contains much less insulating soil than the ground, so its roots experience rapid temperature changes and are more exposed to freezing. After flowering, move the container to a cool, protected place and insulate the root ball. Keep the potting mix from drying completely, but do not keep it wet.

A cool, bright location can hold the plant dormant until outdoor conditions moderate. In spring, return it outside gradually, increasing exposure over several days so tender growth acclimatizes instead of being scorched or chilled.
| Condition | Primary risk | Care priority |
|---|---|---|
| In-ground, established | Freeze–thaw heaving and crown damage | Late-season mulch over the crown |
| In-ground, planted late | Insufficient root establishment | Consistent moisture and extra winter protection |
| Container-grown | Rapid root-zone temperature changes and drying | Insulate, shelter and monitor moisture closely |
Prevent and diagnose common problems
UC Integrated Pest Management lists aphids, mites, thrips, whiteflies, caterpillars, leafhoppers, scales, nematodes, leaf spots, powdery mildew, botrytis, root and crown rots, and viruses among possible mum problems.
Start with prevention
- Buy vigorous plants and quarantine questionable additions.
- Space plants for airflow rather than crowding them.
- Use well-drained soil and containers with open drainage holes.
- Water the soil, not the foliage.
- Remove fallen or diseased leaves and spent debris.
Choose controls carefully
Inspect leaves, stems and the soil line to identify the actual pest or disease before treating. Select a product labeled for the diagnosed problem, follow its directions and observe local application rules. A wilted plant is not automatically thirsty: saturated soil, root rot, pests and disease can produce similar symptoms.
Quick Recap
A simple seasonal care schedule
| Season or stage | Actions |
|---|---|
| Planting | Choose a garden mum, provide six or more hours of sun, improve difficult soil, plant at container depth and water deeply. |
| Early growth | Keep soil evenly moist, fertilize during active growth and pinch 6-inch shoots every two to three weeks. |
| Midseason | Stop pinching by the locally appropriate deadline (mid-July is an Arkansas guideline) and avoid night lighting. |
| Flowering | Water at soil level, deadhead spent blooms and maintain airflow. |
| After frost | Leave stems until after the first hard frost, then mulch the crown in cold regions; shelter and insulate containers. |
| Spring return | Remove winter protection as growth resumes and acclimatize overwintered containers gradually. |
