Dracaena marginata, commonly called the dragon tree, does best indoors in bright, indirect light, a pot with drainage, and soil that is allowed to dry between thorough waterings. It tolerates lower light, but brighter indirect light supports better growth. North Carolina Extension now files the plant as Dracaena reflexa var. angustifolia; Dracaena marginata is a previous botanical name you may still see on labels.
Choose a bright spot out of direct sun
Place a dragon tree where it receives bright, indirect light. Texas A&M recommends bright light without direct sunlight; intense direct sun can be unsuitable, while a dim corner may slow growth. UF/IFAS notes that the plant can be used in lower-light areas, but growth can be faster with sufficient light. If moving it from a dim spot, shift it gradually rather than placing it abruptly in strong sun.
Water when the mix has dried, not by the calendar
Water thoroughly, then let the potting mix dry between waterings. Check the soil before watering instead of following a fixed weekly schedule: how quickly it dries depends on conditions such as light, season, pot, and room environment. Do not let the plant become severely dry, and avoid keeping the mix continually wet.
Use a draining pot and well-draining mix
Choose a pot with drainage holes and a well-draining indoor potting mix. Excess water needs a way out; poor drainage and overly frequent watering can contribute to root rot. A particular branded mix is not required by the care guidance.

Consider fluoride when leaf tips or edges discolor
Brown or scorched tips and leaf margins can have more than one cause, so discoloration alone does not establish a diagnosis. Dracaena is sensitive to fluoride, which North Carolina and Clemson Extension identify as a possible contributor to tip or margin injury. If you suspect fluoride-related damage, try distilled or non-fluoridated water and continue checking watering and drainage.
Prune to manage size and encourage branching
You can prune stems to keep the plant smaller. North Carolina Extension reports that cut stems usually branch into two or more shoots. Stem cuttings are also a recognized propagation option; Texas A&M lists tip or stem cuttings and basal shoots. The sources establish these options but do not provide a complete home propagation procedure.

Check for pests before choosing a treatment
Inspect the foliage and stems for mites and scale, which are common concerns. Thrips and chewing insects are also reported. Identify the pest before selecting a control method rather than treating every damaged leaf as the same problem.
