For a percentage-based mortar pigment, calculate the dose from the batch’s cement mass—not its total mortar weight: pigment mass = cement mass × dosage percentage ÷ 100. For example, a 3% dose for 25 kg of cement is 0.75 kg of pigment. That is an arithmetic example, not a universal recommended dose; follow the pigment maker’s mortar instructions, including any color-unit system or product-specific limit.

Use cement mass as the calculation basis

Mortar contains sand and may also contain lime or other cementitious ingredients, so its total weight is not the same as its cement weight. A pigment percentage stated as a proportion of cement mass must be calculated from the cement in the batch. Using total mortar weight instead can produce a substantially different dose.

For a percentage-based product, use:

Pigment mass = cement mass × dosage percentage ÷ 100

Keep the units consistent. If cement is measured in kilograms, the result is kilograms of pigment; if cement is measured in pounds, the result is pounds of pigment. Convert units before calculating if your batch and pigment package use different units.

The percentage is a ratio: a 3% dose means 3 units of pigment for every 100 units of cement by mass. It does not mean 3% of the finished mortar, and it does not specify a shade by itself. First establish the cement quantity, then apply the product’s stated percentage to that quantity.

Worked example

A batch contains 25 kg of cement, and the chosen product’s directions call for a trial dose of 3% of cement mass:

25 kg × 3 ÷ 100 = 0.75 kg of pigment

The 3% figure here is only an example used to demonstrate the arithmetic. It is not a recommended starting point for every pigment, mortar, or desired shade.

Quick calculation table

The table shows the arithmetic for common example percentages. The 10% row is included as a calculation reference, not as a target dose; see the standards section before treating any maximum as applicable.

Cement in batch 1% example 3% example 5% example 10% example
10 kg 0.10 kg 0.30 kg 0.50 kg 1.00 kg
25 kg 0.25 kg 0.75 kg 1.25 kg 2.50 kg
50 kg 0.50 kg 1.50 kg 2.50 kg 5.00 kg

These values are calculated examples only. Use a percentage only when the product specifies that percentage basis, and keep the selected dose within its directions and the job requirements.

Check the arithmetic and the batch size

A useful way to check a calculation is to convert the percentage to a decimal multiplier. For example, 3% is 0.03, so 25 kg × 0.03 = 0.75 kg. This is the same operation as multiplying by 3 and dividing by 100. If the result seems implausibly large or small, verify that you have used the cement mass, the intended percentage, and the same mass units throughout.

For a batch that is a fraction of a larger recipe, calculate from the actual cement in that smaller batch rather than weighing pigment for the full recipe and estimating a portion. If the cement quantity doubles and the same percentage-based dose applies, the pigment mass doubles too. Keep the recipe and any rounding decisions consistent across production batches; small differences in pigment weight can show up as color differences, particularly when batches are small.

Check what the pigment’s dose instructions mean

Before weighing anything, confirm whether the product gives a percentage of cement mass or uses a proprietary system such as color units per batch. Those systems are not interchangeable by assumption. If the manufacturer provides a color-unit table for its mortar-color system, use that table and its instructions rather than converting the units into a generic percentage.

Also confirm that the product is intended for masonry mortar and that its instructions apply to your type of mortar. Product chemistry, intended use, dosing basis, and mixing directions vary. A percentage found on one product’s instructions should not be transferred to another pigment.

  • Find the dosage basis stated in the product directions: cement mass, color units per batch, or another explicit system.
  • Check whether the stated instructions cover mortar, rather than assuming directions for another cement-based material apply.
  • Note the product’s permitted dose, mixing procedure, and any limits in the project specification.
  • If the instructions are unclear about what material the percentage is based on, ask the manufacturer or project specifier before batching.

Mortar pigment products may look comparable in a listing while specifying different ways to measure them. When comparing options, check the dosage basis first, then confirm explicit mortar suitability, any maximum dose, the product’s mixing method, and the color shown in a sample made with your materials. Check package quantities against the amount needed for your intended batch size as well. A package size alone does not establish how much to add.

Supplier and product paths associated with mortar color include Solomon Colors, Serra Ciments, Bayferrox/LANXESS, and Davis Colors. Their inclusion is not a ranking, and no one product dose should be assumed to apply across these lines. Check each current product’s own mortar instructions. When shopping for an iron oxide mortar pigment powder, verify masonry-mortar suitability, color, dosing basis, and directions in the actual product listing; a product name or color image is not a substitute for those details.

Calculate the amount for your actual batch

  1. Determine the cement mass. Use the recipe, mix design, or product instructions to establish how much cement is in the batch. Do not substitute the full weight of sand, water, and mortar for the cement quantity.
  2. Choose a permitted trial dose. Use the selected pigment’s mortar directions and any project requirements. Do not select a dose simply because it is near a published maximum.
  3. Calculate the pigment mass. Multiply cement mass by the percentage and divide by 100. For example, for 40 kg of cement at an illustrative 2% dose: 40 × 2 ÷ 100 = 0.8 kg.
  4. Weigh the pigment. Use a suitable scale. A precision scale is particularly useful when the batch or resulting pigment quantity is small.
  5. Make a sample batch. Use the actual cement, sand, pigment, and water proportions before preparing the full quantity. Assess the sample after curing under the conditions relevant to the work.
  6. Record and repeat the recipe consistently. Keep ingredient proportions, water, mixing, and curing conditions consistent when repeating or comparing batches. Follow the pigment’s mixing directions and do not retemper colored mortar by adding water where the product instructions prohibit it.

Why total mortar weight gives the wrong answer

Suppose a batch has 25 kg of cement and 75 kg of sand. A 3% dose based on cement is 0.75 kg. Calculating 3% of the 100 kg of cement plus sand would give 3 kg instead, four times as much pigment. The example excludes water and is only meant to show why the basis matters; use the actual recipe and the product’s stated basis.

The same distinction matters when a bag or recipe describes a complete mortar batch rather than listing cement separately. Do not treat the total bag mass as cement mass unless the product instructions explicitly define it that way. Establish the actual dosing basis from the relevant mix information or ask the manufacturer or specifier to clarify it. Guessing at cement content and then applying a percentage can create a dose error even when the multiplication itself is correct.

Choose a color by testing, not by calculation alone

The formula tells you how much pigment corresponds to a chosen percentage. It cannot predict the finished shade across different materials and curing conditions. The pigment-to-cement proportion affects intensity, but other parts of the mix and the work process affect the visible result.

  • Cement color: White cement generally produces brighter colors; grey cement can make a color appear duller.
  • Sand color: Sand changes the perceived mortar color, so test with the sand intended for the job.
  • Water and hydration: More water can lighten the result. Consistent hydration and curing contribute to even color; keep the water quantity and water-to-cement ratio consistent when assessing samples.
  • Mixing and curing: Use consistent mixing and curing conditions when comparing samples. A sample made with different materials or handling may not represent the production work.

Make a sample with the same materials and proportions planned for the job. If you compare doses, change the pigment amount while holding the other inputs and conditions steady. This makes the comparison meaningful; changing sand, water, or cement at the same time makes it difficult to tell which change altered the appearance.

Keep a simple record of the sample recipe: cement and sand proportions, the pigment product and amount, water quantity, and the mixing and curing approach. That record helps you repeat the chosen sample rather than relying on memory. If the sample is not the intended color, adjust only within the product’s directions and make another controlled sample. There is no universal dose that guarantees a particular shade across different pigments and material combinations.

When assessing a sample, compare it after curing rather than relying only on its appearance while fresh. Curing and consistent hydration affect color evenness, so a sample that was mixed or cured differently is not a reliable comparison. Keep sample conditions as close as practical to the planned work, and use the actual job materials rather than substitute sand or cement.

Understand the standard and project limits

ASTM International’s current listed edition is ASTM C979/C979M-24. It covers colored and white powder pigments used as admixtures to integrally color concrete. Section 1.4 states: “The maximum prescribed dosage rate of a pigment, established in accordance with 4.7, shall be equal to or less than 10 mass % of cement.” In scope, that is a maximum prescribed dosage—not a normal target or a guarantee of a particular shade.

Because the standard addresses concrete pigments, it is a useful technical reference but does not replace mortar-specific product instructions or project requirements. It also does not establish compatibility with other admixtures unless those combinations have been tested. Follow the requirements that apply to the specified mortar and selected product; a more restrictive product direction or job specification takes precedence for the work.

A State of Missouri project specification, section 040501, sets a project-specific maximum of 10% of Portland cement weight for its specified pigments, and 2% of Portland cement weight for pigments containing carbon black. These are limits in that project specification, not universal limits for every product, project, or jurisdiction. Where a project specification governs, check its exact wording and scope rather than relying on a general rule.

If multiple pigments are combined, ASTM C979/C979M-24 says their total dosage must not exceed the individual maximum dosage rates of the component pigments. Do not assume that combining separately permitted doses makes the combined mix acceptable; check the standard’s scope, each product’s directions, and the job requirements.

The word “maximum” is important: neither the ASTM limit nor the Missouri project limit tells you which percentage will produce an acceptable shade or be suitable for a particular product. The ASTM figure applies within the standard’s scope, and the Missouri figures apply to that project specification. Other product directions or project documents may impose more restrictive requirements. If those requirements appear to conflict, resolve the issue with the responsible manufacturer or project specifier before mixing rather than choosing the highest number you find.

Common calculation and batching mistakes

  • Applying the percentage to all mortar ingredients: Use cement mass when the product defines its dose as a percentage of cement. Sand and water are not part of that denominator.
  • Confusing cement with all cementitious ingredients: Mortars may contain lime or other cementitious constituents, but do not silently include them in a cement-based calculation. Use the manufacturer’s explicit dosing basis or obtain clarification if the mix design and product instructions do not align.
  • Treating a ceiling as a target: A standard or project maximum does not tell you the right dose for the required color. Select a dose within product directions and verify the result in a sample.
  • Converting color units into a percentage without authority: Use a manufacturer’s color-unit chart and batch instructions when that is the specified system.
  • Estimating small quantities: Small weighing errors can cause a noticeable difference between batches. Weigh the pigment, using a precision scale where needed.
  • Changing water between batches: Water affects the apparent color and consistency. Measure it consistently and follow the product’s guidance; do not add water to retemper colored mortar where instructions prohibit it.
  • Expecting a formula to ensure a shade: Cement, sand, water, curing, and pigment system all influence appearance. The calculation establishes dose, while a sample establishes whether the result is acceptable for the materials and conditions.
  • Assuming all pigment products share a recipe: A percentage or mixing method from one product does not automatically apply to another. Follow the directions for the selected mortar pigment.
  • Rounding without checking: Round only to an amount your scale can measure reliably and that follows product directions. If the amount is too small for a dependable measurement, use a suitable precision scale or make a batch size that allows accurate weighing.

What to verify before full production

Before scaling a successful sample to the full job, confirm the batch recipe and dose basis in writing. Check that the intended pigment amount is weighed against the cement quantity for each batch and that the mixing, water, and curing approach can be repeated. For specified or regulated work, resolve any conflict between product directions, standard references, and the project specification with the responsible specifier before proceeding.

Also check that the chosen product’s instructions match the mortar application, that any color-unit table or percentage is being followed as written, and that the quantity on hand can be measured consistently for the planned batch. Keep the sample recipe available to the people batching the work so cement, pigment, sand, and water proportions are not interpreted differently from one batch to the next.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much pigment do I add to mortar?

For a product that specifies a percentage of cement mass, multiply the cement mass by the stated percentage and divide by 100. For example, 25 kg of cement at an illustrative 3% dose equals 0.75 kg of pigment. That example is arithmetic, not a universal recommended dose; follow the selected product’s mortar instructions and limits.

How much iron oxide do you need for mortar plaster coloring?

There is no universal amount. First check that the iron oxide pigment is intended for masonry mortar and whether its directions specify a cement-mass percentage or a product-specific color-unit system. Calculate only from the stated basis, and make a sample with the actual cement, sand, and water proportions before full production.

Should I calculate pigment from the total weight of mortar?

Not when the product gives a percentage of cement mass. Mortar includes sand and may include lime or other cementitious ingredients, so total mortar weight is not the same as cement weight. Use the denominator explicitly stated in the product directions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is 10% the normal mortar pigment dose?

No. ASTM C979/C979M-24 gives a maximum prescribed dosage of 10 mass % of cement within its scope; it is a ceiling, not a recommended target. Product instructions and project specifications may be more restrictive, and a sample is needed to assess the appearance.

Can I combine two mortar pigments?

Do not assume that two separately permitted doses are acceptable when combined. ASTM C979/C979M-24 says the total dosage of combined pigments must not exceed the individual maximum dosage rates of the component pigments. Check the standard’s scope, each product’s directions, and the governing project requirements.

Why does my mortar sample look different from the expected color?

Pigment proportion affects intensity, but cement color, sand color, water quantity, hydration, mixing, and curing also affect the visible result. White cement generally produces brighter colors, grey cement can dull them, and more water can lighten the result. Compare controlled samples made with the actual job materials and consistent conditions.

Can I use a color-unit chart as a percentage?

Not unless the manufacturer explicitly provides a conversion. A proprietary color-unit system and a percentage of cement mass are different dosing systems. Follow the chart and batch instructions supplied for that product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: When a mortar pigment is dosed by percentage, calculate from the cement mass—not the total mortar weight—using cement mass × percentage ÷ 100. Verify the product’s mortar-specific dosing basis and limits, weigh accurately, and test the actual materials in a consistent sample before batching the full job. Treat published maximums as limits, not shade recommendations.
