First calculate the concrete volume for each part of the project; then use the specified mix design or the actual bagged product’s stated yield to work out how much to order. Volume alone cannot tell you how much cement a structural mix needs. Keep concrete, dry-blended concrete, cement sold separately, and masonry mortar as separate estimates.

Start by identifying what you are estimating

“Cement” is often used casually to mean any material used to make concrete, but the quantities are not interchangeable:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Concrete combines aggregate, cement, water and, depending on the mix, other materials. A project volume tells you how much concrete is needed, not how much cement is in it.
  • Dry-blended concrete is a pre-proportioned product sold in bags. Its package states the volume of concrete the product yields after water is added. Use that yield to estimate bags.
  • Cement sold separately is one ingredient in site-batched concrete. Calculate its amount from the approved mix design or specified cement content.
  • Masonry mortar is a separate estimate for laying masonry units. Its quantity depends on the units, mortar type and bedding method.

Before measuring, check the construction drawings and specifications. Note which elements are concrete, which mix each element requires, and whether any openings or other areas should be excluded. Do not substitute a generic cement-to-sand-to-aggregate ratio for a specified structural mix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also clarify what a supplier means by “ready mix.” Bagged dry-blended concrete is mixed with water on site and estimated from its printed yield. Ready-mixed delivery is a separate supply method: confirm the volume and specified mix with the supplier, along with delivery and placement arrangements. Neither term means a bag of cement alone.

How to calculate concrete volume

Measure each pour separately

List each element that will be poured, such as a slab, footing, strip foundation, column or step. Record its dimensions from the drawings or accurate site measurements. If two elements require different specified mixes, keep their calculations separate even if they are poured on the same day.

A useful worksheet has one row per element, with its name, dimensions, calculated volume, specified mix and supply method. This makes it easier to catch an omitted footing or step and to avoid combining volumes that need different mixes. If a drawing gives a structural dimension, use that rather than an assumed standard size; resolve unclear or conflicting dimensions with the project professional before ordering.

Use consistent units

For a rectangular element, calculate volume as:

Volume = length × width × thickness

When calculating in cubic metres, convert every dimension to metres before multiplying. For example, 100 mm of thickness is 0.10 m. Multiplying dimensions in metres gives a volume in cubic metres (m³).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a rectangular slab measuring 6 m by 4 m and 100 mm (0.10 m) thick:

6 × 4 × 0.10 = 2.4 m³

This is the calculated volume for that slab. It is not a cement-bag count: the cement amount still depends on the specified mix or the yield of the selected product.

Unit consistency matters at every step. For instance, multiplying a length in metres by a width in metres and a thickness left in millimetres will not produce a meaningful cubic-metre result. Convert first, then write the units beside the result. When a bag label gives yield in litres rather than cubic metres, convert the units before dividing; do not divide a cubic-metre project volume directly by a litre figure.

Calculate other common shapes

  • Rectangular footing or foundation section: length × width × depth, with all dimensions in the same unit.
  • Column with a square or rectangular section: cross-section width × cross-section depth × height.
  • Column with a circular section: π × radius² × height, using the radius rather than the diameter.
  • Steps or irregular work: divide the shape into simple sections, calculate each section’s volume, then add the volumes. Account for any parts that are not to be filled with concrete.

For more complex geometry, use the dimensions and method specified in the drawings or estimating documents. Do not count a void as concrete, and avoid subtracting an area twice when dimensions already exclude it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a circular column, for example, a drawing may give the diameter; halve it to get the radius used in the formula. For a stepped or irregular pour, make a small sketch and label each section so you can see which volumes are included and which are openings or voids. These are volume-calculation steps only; they do not determine whether the dimensions or design are structurally appropriate.

Add only volumes that share a mix

Add the volumes of all elements using the same specified mix to get the order volume for that mix. Keep separate totals for different mixes; one combined volume can conceal a requirement for different concrete properties or proportions.

How to calculate bags of dry-blended concrete

For a pre-proportioned dry concrete product, check the bag for its stated concrete yield after water is added. Divide the required volume by that yield, using matching units, and round the result up to a whole bag:

Number of bags = required concrete volume ÷ yield per bag

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Concrete Society’s UK guidance, published 3 June 2025, describes DIY dry-blended concrete as generally sold in 25 kg bags and uses an example yield of 0.010 m³ per bag. Its example is 1.65 m³ ÷ 0.010 m³ = 165 bags. That is an illustration of the calculation, not a universal yield for every 25 kg bag or product.

For the 2.4 m³ slab example above, if—and only if—the selected product’s label states a yield of 0.010 m³ per bag, the calculation is 2.4 ÷ 0.010 = 240 bags. If the actual label gives a different yield, use that figure instead. Check that the product is suitable for the intended work and that its yield is expressed in units compatible with your project calculation.

Bag weight is not a substitute for yield. A bag’s stated mass does not by itself reveal how much concrete it produces, and similarly sized bags of different products need not have the same yield.

This is why “How many bags of cement do I need?” needs a follow-up question: do you mean bags of cement for batching, or bags of pre-proportioned concrete mix? For dry concrete, the label yield answers the bag-count calculation. For cement alone, the specified mix content or proportions are still required. If dividing produces a fraction, round the purchase quantity up to a whole bag; do not assume that a remainder of dry mix can be replaced by an equivalent amount of cement.

How to calculate cement for site-batched concrete

If you are buying cement, sand and aggregate separately, use the cement content or proportions in the engineer’s specification or an approved mix design. Do not derive cement quantity from the finished concrete volume alone.

When the mix design gives cement content per cubic metre

If the specification gives cement content as C kilograms per cubic metre, calculate:

Cement mass (kg) = concrete volume (m³) × C (kg/m³)

Then divide the cement mass by the mass of the bag you will buy:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Number of cement bags = cement mass (kg) ÷ bag mass (kg)

Round up to a whole bag when ordering, and use the bag size actually sold in your location. The cement content, not a generic per-cubic-metre rule, supplies the value for C.

Keep the calculation in stages: first establish the concrete volume for one specified mix, then multiply by that mix’s stated cement content, then convert the resulting cement mass to the local bag size. This avoids treating the weight of a bag as if it were a concrete yield. If the mix design includes blended cement or other specified materials, follow its stated ingredient quantities rather than assuming that all binder is ordinary portland cement.

When the specification gives proportions instead

Follow the mix design’s stated proportions and batching basis. A proportion may be expressed by mass or by volume; those bases cannot be casually substituted for one another. The mix design must also be suitable for the intended application. The American Cement Association explains that concrete includes aggregate, portland or blended cement and water, and may include supplementary cementitious materials, fibers or admixtures. It also notes that water-cement ratio and proportioning affect strength, workability and durability. Consequently, changing quantities to use up a particular number of bags can change the mix rather than merely adjust the order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A specification that gives proportions is not an invitation to choose a convenient ratio from an unrelated example. Check whether the stated basis is mass or volume and apply it as written. Do not infer a structural mix from the slab or foundation volume, and do not add extra water or cement simply to make the batch easier to place; changes to proportions can alter the intended properties.

Keep regional bag sizes and quantity tables in context

Bag weights and published material tables are not universal conversion factors. The Concrete Society of Southern Africa’s 2024 materials guide uses 50 kg cement bags in its tabulated quantities. By contrast, the Concrete Society’s 2025 UK guidance describes 25 kg bags of dry-blended concrete. These refer to different products and regional contexts: a 25 kg bag of pre-proportioned concrete is not equivalent to a 25 kg bag of cement.

The Southern African guide’s quantities and the Concrete Society of Southern Africa’s 2024 trial-mix leaflet concern particular regional tables or trial mixes. Treat them as context-specific material, not as a universal cement allowance per cubic metre for an unspecified project. Follow the applicable local specification and product labeling.

Before using a published table, check the location, bag mass, material being counted, and mix or application covered. A table expressed in 50 kg cement bags cannot be applied directly to a local product sold in a different bag size, nor can a trial-mix quantity be assumed to fit another project’s specification. Product labels and project documents answer different questions: the label gives a product’s yield or instructions, while the drawings and mix specification define the project requirement.

Estimate masonry mortar separately

Do not include mortar in the concrete total or use a concrete bag yield to estimate it. Mortar needs depend on masonry-unit dimensions, mortar type and how the units are bedded. The Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association (CMHA) publishes estimating rules of thumb for certain cases, but cautions that estimates require judgment and complex work may need detailed estimating. Its mortar examples assume face-shell bedding, so they may not fit another bedding method or unit type.

For a straightforward estimate, identify the unit type and dimensions, the mortar specification and bedding method, then use estimating information that matches those conditions. For complex masonry, rely on a detailed project estimate rather than applying a rule of thumb outside the case it describes.

In practice, the same wall area may not lead to the same mortar estimate if the masonry unit dimensions or bedding method differ. Record those details before choosing an estimating rule, and keep the mortar materials out of a concrete order total. The available CMHA examples are bounded cases rather than a universal mortar rate.

Choose a supply method that fits the job

The calculation is only one part of planning. The choice among site batching, bagged dry concrete and ready-mixed delivery depends on the project’s volume, access, labor and mixing capacity, required specification, storage, locally available products and yield, and cost or waste considerations.

Supply method What to calculate or verify Planning considerations
Site-batched concrete from separate materials Concrete volume and the cement, aggregate, water and other quantities in the approved mix design Confirm the mix and batching method against the project specification. The amount of each ingredient cannot be inferred from volume alone.
Pre-proportioned dry concrete bags Required concrete volume divided by the yield printed on the actual bag, rounded up Check application suitability, units, bag size and storage. Published yields for another product are not a substitute for the chosen product’s label.
Ready-mixed delivery Required volume for each specified mix, with ordering arrangements confirmed with the supplier Consider site access, delivery and placement arrangements, the required mix and project timing. The cited guidance does not establish a universal volume threshold or current local price comparison for choosing delivery.

Think through each method against the actual job rather than looking for one universally cheapest option. A small pour may make bagged mix convenient if the product suits the application and the site can handle mixing and placement. Site batching requires suitable ingredients and a reliable way to follow the approved proportions. Ready-mixed delivery means coordinating the order, access and placement with the supplier. Compare local prices, delivery or hire terms, labor and expected waste for your own circumstances; no current universal cost comparison follows from the estimating formulas.

For larger quantities mixed on site, SANS10400.co.za advises considering hiring a concrete mixer. That guidance gives neither a universal quantity threshold nor a cost comparison, so decide based on the volume, available labor and equipment, and local hire terms.

Whichever method you choose, confirm that it can meet the specified mix and that the practical setup matches the amount to be placed. Storage matters for bagged products, while access and timing matter for delivery. The volume calculation informs the order; it does not replace checking those supply and placement arrangements.

Allow for ordering uncertainty without guessing the mix

Measured volume is an estimate of the concrete required by the dimensions, not a guarantee that every batch or placement will use exactly that amount. Check dimensions against the drawings, include all relevant elements, and account for excluded areas before ordering. Any additional allowance for site conditions, handling or waste is a project-specific planning choice. The cited guidance does not establish one percentage that applies to every home project.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not use a waste allowance to compensate for uncertain dimensions, and do not increase or reduce the cement proportion to manage ordering risk. If the specified mix and product yield are known, apply the allowance—if the project team chooses one—to the appropriate concrete volume, then calculate materials using the same mix or product basis.

Make the allowance a visible, separate planning decision rather than silently changing the calculation. For a specified site-batched mix, any adjusted volume still uses the same specified cement content or proportions. For dry-blended concrete, divide the adjusted volume by the actual product yield and round up. That keeps the quantity estimate separate from the mix design.

A practical order-check before you buy

  1. Separate the work: list each slab, footing, column, step and masonry area, noting its specified material or mix.
  2. Verify dimensions: use the drawings or confirmed measurements, account for voids, and convert all dimensions to consistent units.
  3. Calculate volumes: work out each concrete element separately, then total only elements using the same mix.
  4. Choose the calculation basis: use the approved cement content or mix proportions for site batching, or the actual product yield for bagged dry concrete.
  5. Check units and bag size: convert volume units if needed and use the locally available bag mass where calculating cement by weight.
  6. Confirm suitability and logistics: check that the mix or product meets the project requirement and that the chosen supply and mixing method fit site access and capacity.
  7. Set any allowance deliberately: base it on project conditions rather than a universal percentage, and keep it separate from the specified mix proportions.

Before placing the order, compare your final total with the drawings, recheck unit conversions, verify the mix for each element, and confirm the supplier’s units. For bagged concrete, use the yield on the product you will actually buy. For cement sold separately, verify the specified content and local bag mass. If a drawing, specification or supplier quantity does not line up with your estimate, resolve the discrepancy rather than selecting whichever number is more convenient.

What a volume calculation can—and cannot—tell you

A reliable dimension-based calculation gives you the concrete volume to plan for. It does not establish structural suitability, the correct cement content, or the right mortar quantity. Those require the relevant specification, mix design or product information. In particular, structural concrete should be ordered and batched to the project requirements rather than to a generic online ratio.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate cement for a slab?

First calculate the slab’s concrete volume: length × width × thickness, with all dimensions in the same units. Then use the specified cement content or mix proportions for site-batched concrete, or divide the slab volume by the actual dry-blended product’s stated yield. Volume by itself does not determine cement quantity.

How many bags of cement do I need?

If you mean cement sold separately, multiply the concrete volume by the cement content in the approved mix design, then divide the cement mass by the mass of the local cement bag. If you mean bagged dry-blended concrete, divide concrete volume by the yield printed on that product’s bag and round up. These are different products and calculations.

How many bags of ready-mix concrete do I need?

For bagged dry concrete, divide the required volume by the yield printed on the selected bag, making sure both volumes use matching units, and round up to a whole bag. Do not use a yield example from another product as if it applied to yours. Ready-mixed delivery is ordered by its specified volume and arrangements confirmed with the supplier, not by bag yield.

How much concrete will I need for my foundation?

Calculate each foundation section from its dimensions. For a rectangular section, use length × width × depth; calculate separate sections individually and add them only when they use the same specified mix. Account for voids and excluded areas, and confirm dimensions against the construction drawings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use a standard cement-to-sand-to-aggregate ratio for a structural mix?

No. Use the engineer’s specification or an approved mix design for structural work. The required cement quantity depends on the specified mix, and proportioning and water-cement ratio affect concrete properties including strength, workability and durability.

Should I add a fixed percentage for waste?

There is no single percentage established for every home project. Treat any allowance as a project-specific planning choice after checking dimensions and excluded areas. Keep it separate from the specified mix proportions and do not use it to compensate for uncertain measurements.

The Bottom Line

Measure each concrete element accurately, calculate its volume in consistent units, and keep different mixes separate. Use the approved mix design to calculate cement for site batching, or the actual product label’s yield for bagged concrete; estimate mortar separately. There is no universal cement-bag count per cubic metre or waste percentage that suits every home project.
