You can make a pitched, xylophone-like instrument from water-filled bottles, PVC pipes, paper tubes, or wooden bars. For the fastest build, line up sturdy bottles or jars and adjust their water levels; for separate bars with a clearer length-to-pitch relationship, use PVC pipe. None of these materials automatically produces a standard musical scale, so expect to tune by ear or with a tuner.
Choose a build that fits your materials and tools
| Method | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Water-filled bottles or jars | A quick household sound experiment | Glass needs gentle handling, and matching exact notes takes experimentation. |
| PVC pipes | A bar-style instrument with a clear length-to-pitch relationship | Requires cutting, a support frame, and adult help for the cutting work. |
| Paper tubes | A light craft project using common materials | Good for exploring sound, but not a calibrated musical scale. |
| Wooden bars | A more conventional instrument that can be tuned | Cutting and sanding take more care; pitch adjustments are gradual and hard to reverse. |
Make a water xylophone from bottles or jars
This is the simplest option if you have several similar glass containers. It is more accurately described as a water xylophone or crystallophone: the containers themselves vibrate when struck, while changing the water changes how they vibrate. The Ontario Science Centre explains that adding water makes a glass container heavier and harder to vibrate, lowering its pitch (Do-It-Yourself Crystallophone).
- Gather stable bottles or jars, water, and a spoon or chopstick. The American Chemical Society’s “Home-Grown Xylophone!” uses six identical glass soda bottles and also lists a ruler, tape, crayon, and paper for its activity (American Chemical Society activity).
- Set the containers in a row and tap each gently. Start with similar water levels, then add or remove water to change the pitches.
- Arrange the containers from low to high pitch. A staircase of water levels is a useful starting point, but the order of water heights and pitches can depend on the container and how it is being struck.
- When you find a sequence you like, mark the water levels so you can refill the containers consistently.
The South Australian Department for Education also suggests lining up bottles or jars, adding water in a staircase pattern, and tapping them with a spoon or chopstick (How does sound work?). Container shape, size, and thickness affect the result; there is no universal water measurement for a particular note.
Build a PVC-pipe xylophone
PVC is a practical choice when you want distinct bars rather than a row of containers. The Dallas Symphony Orchestra activity calls for different lengths of PVC pipe, two boards, string, and a mallet or small hammer, and specifies an adult helper for cutting (Build a xylophone).

- Have an adult cut pipes to different lengths. Keep the pieces long enough to test and adjust rather than aiming for exact notes on the first cut.
- Arrange them from longest to shortest. The orchestra activity describes the relationship: shorter pipes produce higher notes, while longer pipes produce lower notes.
- Support the pipes across two boards and tie them in place. The activity says its best sound comes when a little less than one third of each pipe extends off the support; treat that arrangement as a starting point, not a guarantee for every build.
- Tap each pipe and compare the pitches. If specific notes matter, check them with a tuner and trim gradually. The cited activity provides no note-by-note length chart, so a particular cut length cannot be assumed to produce a particular note.
Make a paper-tube version for a craft activity
Paper tubes offer a lighter build without glass or pipe cutting. The Minnesota Children’s Museum describes a project using six to eight paper tubes, cardboard, rubber bands or hair ties, glue, paint, and chopsticks (DIY Paper Tube Xylophone).
- Cut six to eight tubes so each is about an inch shorter than the preceding tube, following the museum’s project instructions.
- Paint the tubes if desired, then arrange them in a trapezoid and secure them with rubber bands.
- Place the assembly in a cardboard frame and tap the tubes with chopsticks to explore the sounds.
This activity is for experimenting with sound; it does not establish that the tubes will play calibrated notes. For children, choose an age-appropriate cutting tool and provide adult help as needed. The museum’s guidance is to support children’s exploration rather than take over the project.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
Tune wooden bars for a more conventional instrument
Wooden bars are the most demanding option here, but they offer a more direct route to a conventional bar instrument. In PBS Design Squad’s recycled-material build, cutting material from a bar’s ends raises its pitch, while removing material from the middle lowers its pitch by slowing vibration (Design Squad: DIY Xylophone).
Make small changes and check the pitch after each one. Removing material from the middle is difficult to reverse, so do not treat it as a casual adjustment. PBS demonstrates the tuning principle but does not give a universal cut chart or specify one required wood species. A Smithsonian collection record describes one historical xylophone-marimba with 27 bars, including Spanish cedar and black walnut, strung on two cords with separating pins; those woods describe that object, not a requirement for a home build (Smithsonian collection record).

Keep the build safe and the expectations realistic
- Tap glass gently. The Ontario Science Centre cautions against striking glass too hard, and PBS’s glass-and-water activity advises doing the experiment with a grownup.
- Keep containers stable, and supervise children around glass and cutting tools.
- For a paper-tube build, use scissors or a craft knife only with appropriate adult judgment and supervision.
- Do not rely on a fixed bottle water height or pipe length to produce a named note. The cited activities describe ways to explore pitch, not universal tuning charts.
