To create a Tron-inspired home bar, start with a stable cabinet or shelving unit, add concealed LED lighting for the shelves and counter, and use electroluminescent wire (EL wire) for glowing linework. A 2013 Hackaday project used those elements around a wall-mounted half bookcase, with an Arduino Mega and EL shield controlling music-synchronized lights. It is a useful design reference—not a complete construction or wiring plan.
Plan the bar around a stable cabinet
The featured project began with a half bookcase mounted on the wall, then expanded it into a bar and liquor cabinet. That is a practical starting concept: use existing shelving to organize bottles, and plan the counter, lighting controls, and cable routes around the furniture and room.
Hackaday’s 2013 report does not give dimensions, joinery instructions, load ratings, or a bill of materials. Measure the actual space and assess the cabinet and its mounting before adding a counter or storing bottles. Design the support and attachment for the real materials and expected loads rather than copying an unspecified arrangement.
Use LED strips and EL wire for different jobs
The example combined two lighting types. LED strips illuminated the liquor shelves and the underside of the bartop; EL wire created the continuous glowing lines that give the bar its futuristic outline. They are complementary effects, not interchangeable parts: use concealed LEDs where you need area illumination, and consider EL wire for visible accent lines.

The project report lists 120 feet of EL wire for that particular build. That quantity is not a general requirement; the amount for another bar depends on its dimensions and the linework design. The report does not specify a current product model or the driver requirements for EL wire, so confirm those details for any components you choose.
Choose between ambient light and music response
The reported bar synchronized its lights with music using an Arduino Mega and an EL shield. That establishes the broad idea, but not a reproducible electronics design: the report supplies no circuit diagram, code, audio-input method, or wiring instructions.

For a simpler build, use lighting as a static ambient effect and plan controls that are accessible for switching and maintenance. If you want music-responsive effects, first select compatible components and obtain implementation instructions for the specific controller, lights, and audio signal path. Do not assume that the reported controller-and-shield pairing is a complete parts list or that it will work with an arbitrary modern lighting setup.
Treat the bartop as a structural decision
The 2013 project used a glass bartop with 75 pounds of marbles beneath it and LED strips below the surface. Those details describe that one installation; the report does not state the glass type or thickness, support spacing, edge treatment, or spill-management approach.

Do not use the reported glass-and-marbles arrangement as a load specification. If you choose glass, have its suitability and support designed for the actual span, mounting, and expected use. A different surface may suit the room better; the source does not provide enough information to compare materials for strength or cost.
Plan electrical safety before installation
Lighting, controllers, and cable routes should be considered as part of the bar design, not improvised after the furniture is built. Keep the installation usable and maintainable, and follow the electrical requirements that apply where the bar will be installed. For work involving mains wiring, use qualified help when appropriate.
