This DIY rubber-band crossbow is a small maker project built from paint stirrers, bamboo skewers, a spring clothespin and a straw. Make presents the design as an excerpt from Lance Akiyama’s Rubber Band Engineer. Treat it as a supervised physics activity, not a toy for aiming at people or animals: use only a light, soft, blunt projectile and a suitable backstop.
Materials and tools
Make’s project calls for these materials:
- Six 12-inch paint stirrers
- Two thick bamboo skewers
- A piece of string or a rubber band
- A spring-type wooden clothespin
- A large plastic drinking straw
The listed tools are a drill, utility knife, hot-glue gun and scissors. The design uses the stirrers for the frame, a skewer as a shaft, the clothespin in a pivoting trigger arrangement, and the straw as the projectile body. Make’s instructions include dimensions and assembly steps; consult the original project for those exact measurements and placements: Make: Construct a Fun, Powerful Rubber Band Crossbow. The project is excerpted from Akiyama’s book, Rubber Band Engineer; the book is optional, not a required component.
How the mechanism works
Pulling back a rubber band stretches it and stores elastic potential energy. When released, some of that energy becomes motion, propelling the projectile. A learner can observe how changes in the band’s stretch affect travel, but more tension also means more stored energy and greater potential for injury. Do not increase tension to chase distance or power.
Rubber band or string?
Make describes the trade-off qualitatively, not with a measured head-to-head test. Its guidance is that rubber bands are easier to load and calibrate, while a taut string may provide more force; getting a suitable string length takes trial and error.

How far can it shoot?
Make says its example can launch bolts more than 100 feet (30 meters). That is the project page’s claim, not a verified result: the page does not provide a measurement method, projectile mass, test conditions or independent evaluation. A reader’s build may perform differently, so do not treat that distance as a promise.
For context only, Hasbro’s official page for its separate N-Strike Elite CrossBolt (A9317) says the foam-dart blaster fires darts up to 90 feet (27 meters). That manufacturer-stated figure is not a test comparison with this DIY design. Hasbro lists a 12-dart clip, included Elite foam darts and an age recommendation of 8 and up: Hasbro N-Strike Elite CrossBolt.

- Material: natural latex.Great Elasticity from high quality natural latex tube. This brings a strong retraction with high velocity.
- Size: 31.0 cm x 2.3 cm x 0.5 cm(Please pay attention to the size information before you ordered);
- Easily use and installed slingshot replacement band.Ideal replacement rubber band for your old ones.
- Good elasticity and durability.High Concentricity between the inner and outer circles brings stable performance.
- Tubes (loops) at two sides are tied with minimized discrepancy. And of course there should be some difference because of handcraft work.
Safety: keep the projectile soft and the target controlled
The Make example describes placing a dense piece of hot-glue stick in the straw’s tip and mentions a thumbtack. Those details should not be copied for a child-facing or classroom activity: pointed, sharp or heavy projectiles can cause serious injury. Use a light, soft projectile with a blunt, non-pointed end, and keep the mechanism’s tension modest.
Magnum Enterprises’ own safety terms advise adult supervision, eye protection, awareness of the target background, never firing at people or animals, and discontinuing use if damage occurs near the barrel or trigger. These are the seller’s precautions, not a formal safety standard. For this build, apply them conservatively:

- Have an adult supervise assembly and use, especially when tools or hot glue are involved.
- Wear eye protection and choose a clear area with a suitable backstop.
- Never aim or fire at a person or animal; keep bystanders out of the firing area.
- Do not use pointed, sharp, dense or otherwise injurious projectiles.
- Stop using the build if its frame, trigger or launching area is damaged or unreliable.
Make’s project was originally published in 2016, and the page also displays a February 16, 2023 date. Its range statement remains an attributed project claim, not independently documented performance.
