To build a DIY scarecrow, fasten two sturdy pieces of wood or bamboo into a cross, secure the upright in the ground, dress it in old clothes, add weather-appropriate stuffing, and attach a simple head. Reused materials work well; the key is a frame and fastenings sturdy enough for the spot where it will stand.
Materials for a simple scarecrow
- One sturdy upright stick, cane, or timber piece and a shorter crosspiece
- An old shirt or jumper and trousers or overalls
- Twine or string; nails or screws if using a timber frame
- Straw or leaves for stuffing; newspaper is another option if kept dry
- A piece of tights, pillowcase, cloth bag, or similar material for the head
- Optional hat, gloves, scarf, and lightweight decorations
Use suitable sticks or reclaimed wood if you have them; bamboo canes or landscape stakes are alternatives. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) gives an example frame using a sturdy stick or cane about 2 m long, another about 1 m long, and a third about 30 cm long. Nebraska Extension instead describes a 6 ft 2×4 and a 2 ft 2×4 nailed into a cross. These are example dimensions, not fixed requirements: choose a frame that fits the clothes and can be anchored securely in your soil. [RHS; Nebraska Extension]
How to build and install the scarecrow
- Make the cross-frame. Lay the upright and shoulder piece across one another to form a cross. Fasten them securely with twine or string, or use nails or screws for timber. If you are following the RHS example, its shorter third piece can serve as another crosspiece. [RHS; Nebraska Extension; Lowe’s]
- Anchor the upright. For the timber cross described by Nebraska Extension, dig a hole about 1 ft deep, place the frame in it, and pack the soil firmly around it. Lowe’s describes pushing a vertical landscape stake 12–18 inches into the ground and adding support stakes in windy areas. These are options from separate guides; choose an installation that holds firmly in your soil and conditions. [Nebraska Extension; Lowe’s]
- Dress the frame. Slip a shirt or jumper over the shoulder crosspiece and put trousers on the upright. Tie the cuffs, waist, and trouser legs closed so the stuffing stays in place. [RHS; Nebraska Extension]
- Stuff the clothes. Add straw or leaves, as in the RHS instructions, or use newspaper as Nebraska Extension suggests. Keep paper filling dry: paper and cardboard are not suited to weather exposure, and wet or moldy stuffing should be replaced. - Make and attach the head. Fill a section of tights or a pillowcase with straw or newspaper, shape it, and tie it closed with string or twine. Draw or paint on a face, then fasten the head at the top of the frame. [RHS; Nebraska Extension]
- Finish and check it. Add a hat, gloves, scarf, or other reused decorations, securing anything that could blow away. Check the frame and clothing after installation to make sure they remain fastened.
Choose materials for outdoor conditions
At a site exposed to rain or sprinklers, favor materials and fastenings that tolerate the weather. The Utah State University Botanical Center says nylon and polyester clothing held up better than cotton in its two-week outdoor display context; that is a context-specific tip, not a guarantee of service life. It also cautions that paper and cardboard will not withstand weather. Lowe’s advises replacing stuffing if it becomes wet or moldy. [Utah State University Botanical Center; Lowe’s]
For clothing attachment, the Utah State University Botanical Center warns that hot glue can fail in extreme heat and suggests sewing or using large safety pins or staples in its outdoor display context. Keep fasteners secure and avoid leaving exposed sharp points. Lowe’s also cautions against sharp objects and plastic stuffing that could become litter or a wildlife hazard. Will a scarecrow keep birds away?
A scarecrow may not remain noticeable to birds if left in the same position. Lowe’s advises moving it to a new location every week or two and adding lightweight movement, such as ribbons. This is practical guidance, not a guarantee that a scarecrow will protect a particular crop. [Lowe’s]
