You can build a lightweight bamboo garden gate by fitting a pegged round-pole frame, bracing it with an X, and weaving wet split-bamboo strips through the frame. The dimensions below come from one shiorido-style project; adjust the gate to your opening and treat it as decorative rather than security- or load-rated.

What this bamboo gate design involves

A shiorido is a light garden partition formed by weaving thin bamboo strips around a rectangular frame of fine round poles. The Make: project adapts that style to swing as a gate. It uses smaller poles for the frame and larger, green poles for the woven lattice. Finding suitable thin-walled green bamboo can be difficult, so source the stock before cutting the frame to size.

The project’s published estimate is 1–3 hours and $0–$50. The year is not stated on the accessed page, and these figures are the publisher’s estimate—not a current quote or a general project cost.

Plan the opening, materials, and tools

Measure the opening and decide the finished gate’s height and width before cutting. The project dimensions below are examples, not universal specifications; allow for the actual posts, hanging hardware, and clearance needed for the gate to swing.

Red Lantern 4 1.5 ft. Japanese Bamboo Zen Garden Fence Panel, 4ft. x 2ft
  • Narrow japanese fence with bamboo lattice
  • Dark wood frame with walnut stain and visible wood grain
  • Authentic bleached bamboo center panel and top lattice
  • Decorative black tie embellishments on lattice and cross-beam
Part Example project material and dimensions
Vertical frame poles Two poles about 36 inches long and 1¼ inches in diameter
Horizontal frame poles Two poles about 32 inches long and ¾ inch in diameter
Lattice stock Two green poles about 12 feet long and 1½–2 inches in diameter, split into strips
Tying cord About 50 feet of black 3–4 mm hemp, sisal, jute, or palm rope

For those smaller frame sizes, the author specifies two 8-foot green or recently dried poles that are uncracked, plus two 12-foot green poles for the lattice. These are the source project’s quantities and stock choices; your required lengths depend on your finished gate.

Gather a fine-tooth saw, a pole-sawing jig, a drill and twist bits, ½–¾-inch hole-saw or Forstner bits, a small sharp paring knife, and heavy leather gloves. The project lists a bamboo hatchet as a preferred tool and a bamboo splitter as an option for splitting larger poles. It cautions against using spade bits for the frame holes. You will also need bamboo for tapered pegs; eye bolts, stainless screws, and twine are relevant to the hanging and tying methods described below.

Detailed finishing instructions and product recommendations included.
  • ENGINEERED STRENGTH THAT EARNS THE NAME "PREMIUM" – Crafted from side-pressed bamboo laminated with waterproof adhesive, delivering tensile strength greater than stainless steel and hardness that exceeds Red Oak, all while remaining dimensionally stable in exterior conditions traditional lumber can't withstand.
  • CURB APPEAL THAT SETS YOUR PROPERTY APART – The arched design creates a distinctive architectural focal point for gardens, pathways, and backyard entrances, softening the hard rectilinear lines of typical fencing while adding privacy, security, and lasting elegance to your property.
  • A SUSTAINABLE ALTERNATIVE TO TRADITIONAL LUMBER – A bamboo 'tree' regenerates and is ready to reharvest within two years of being cut down. Compared to decades (and even centuries) for traditional wood species which all must be hand planted again (if they are) after being harvested.

Build and brace the frame

  1. Cut and orient the poles. Cut the frame pieces to your planned dimensions with a fine-tooth saw. The project recommends rotating each pole in a jig for a clean cut. Arrange the vertical poles with their natural growth direction consistent, and face visible bends—the source calls them a “zigzag”—toward the viewer to make them less conspicuous.
  2. Fit the horizontal rails. Drill shallow holes into one side of each vertical pole where the rails will sit, then carefully carve the openings to fit the horizontal poles. Work gradually rather than forcing a tight joint: bamboo can split under pressure. Peg each frame joint with a tapered bamboo peg.
  3. Add the X-braces. Drill and carve keyways near the four frame joints so the diagonal braces fit into the frame. The X-braces help the frame stay square. Avoid excessive drilling pressure and adjust the fit carefully instead of forcing the brace into place.

Split, prepare, and weave the bamboo lattice

  1. Split fresh poles into strips. Use green bamboo poles about 1½–2 inches in diameter. The project calls for strips about ½ inch wide and 12 feet long, with the first split following the pole’s center axis. Wear heavy leather gloves while splitting; a specialist bamboo splitter may make the work easier.
  2. Prepare the strips. With a sharp knife, remove the pithy inner material while retaining the woody outer portion. Keep the strips wet until weaving so they bend more readily. Take particular care at nodes, and do not force sharp bends that could crack the bamboo.
  3. Weave in paired strips. Wrap paired strips around the frame in three loops, alternating over and under at crossings to create a lattice. Secure each intersection with twine. Temporary zip ties can hold crossings in position while you weave; replace them with decorative twine when the lattice is complete.

Hang the gate and add a simple latch

For this lightweight design, the project suggests attaching two eye bolts to the gate and bending two #10 stainless wood screws into upward-facing L shapes on the post. The eye bolts slide over the screw ends. These are project-specific instructions, not verified load-rated hardware specifications; choose hardware and attachment points for the gate’s actual size, posts, and use.

The described traditional latch is a braided loop about 6 inches in diameter, made from three bamboo strips about ¼ inch thick. The project recommends round posts 3–4 inches in diameter. Those dimensions are recommendations for its example, not a guarantee of performance on your site.

Fit, durability, and safe use

Plan the gate’s height and width for the opening, and use sturdy, well-secured posts and a stable, braced frame. Choose weather-resistant hardware; Bosch DIY’s general gate guidance specifically mentions stainless screws and hinges. Its advice is not a durability test of this bamboo design. Bamboo may splinter or break and need replacement, and the cited project provides no wind-load testing, security rating, or expected service life.

Check the rules that apply to your property and location before building. Bosch DIY’s planning-rule information concerns the UK and should not be assumed to apply elsewhere. No local supplier availability or current bamboo prices are established for this project.

Inspect the gate and its connections during upkeep. Replace damaged or splintered bamboo and check that the posts, pegs, ties, and hanging hardware remain secure. Do not rely on this lightweight decorative design where a rated barrier, security gate, or engineered wind resistance is required.
