The standard journeyman route requires 8,000 verified hours under a Texas-licensed master electrician; applicants can seek exam eligibility after 7,000 hours. Since July 1, 2026, graduates of a department-approved accelerated journeyman electrician education program (JEEP) may qualify for an alternate exam pathway and 4,000 hours of training credit. The right route depends on the exact program approval and how its training counts toward licensing.
How do I become an electrician in Texas?
Texas licenses electricians through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). A common progression is apprentice, journeyman, then—if you meet additional experience requirements—master electrician. The apprentice license lets a beginner enter the field while working under general supervision; it is not a journeyman license and does not authorize independent electrical work.

You do not have to complete trade school before applying for an apprentice license. The main licensing milestones are to obtain the appropriate entry-level license, build qualifying supervised experience, apply to take the journeyman exam when eligible, pass it, and keep the license current. Formal training can be valuable, but a school certificate alone is not equivalent to a Texas electrician license. In 2026, an approved JEEP became a distinct route with specified training credit; an ordinary electrical course should not be assumed to qualify.

- Apply for an electrical apprentice license. TDLR says no prior experience or exam is required. Its current apprentice page describes an online application, a $20 fee, and annual renewal; check the live page for current details. TDLR apprentice electrician license application
- Find supervised electrical work. Work under the general supervision of a Texas master electrician, journeyman electrician, or residential wireman as permitted by the apprentice license. For the standard journeyman training requirement, verify that the experience is under a Texas-licensed master electrician.
- Keep records as you work. Record employers, dates, work and training hours, and the name and contact information of each supervising master electrician. Ask supervisors to complete the required verification while the work is recent.
- Choose a qualifying training route. You may pursue work-based experience, a registered apprenticeship training program, or—if you can enroll and graduate—an approved JEEP. Confirm the program’s status and how its training applies to your specific license goal.
- Apply for journeyman exam eligibility and pass the exam. TDLR reviews the application and required documentation, then notifies approved applicants about the exam. The standard route has an early exam-eligibility threshold and a separate full experience requirement.
- Renew the license each year. Follow TDLR’s renewal and continuing-education rules, which vary for apprentices enrolled in a department-registered apprenticeship training course.
How do I get an electrical apprentice license in Texas?
Apply through TDLR’s individual apprentice electrician application. The department states that an applicant does not need prior work experience or an exam to apply. The apprentice license allows electrical work under the general supervision of a Texas-licensed master electrician, journeyman electrician, or residential wireman.

TDLR’s page describes an online application and a $20 fee, with annual renewal. It also says applicants who report no criminal convictions and apply online may receive a temporary license automatically. Because fees, forms, and processing details can change, use the live TDLR apprentice application page rather than relying on an old checklist or third-party summary.
Before starting electrical work, make sure the license status and the supervision arrangement are in place. Keep a copy of the license information and understand who is responsible for supervising your work. The apprentice credential is an entry point for learning the trade; it is not permission to represent yourself as a journeyman or to work without the required supervision.
How many hours do I need to become a journeyman electrician in Texas?
The standard journeyman pathway requires 8,000 documented on-the-job training hours under a Texas-licensed master electrician. TDLR allows an applicant with 7,000 hours to apply for exam eligibility before reaching the full 8,000-hour requirement. Those figures serve different purposes: 7,000 hours is the threshold to apply to take the exam, not the standard full training requirement for the license.

Document hours before you need them
Do not wait until you approach the exam threshold to reconstruct your work history. Maintain an organized record of employers, dates, hours, job responsibilities, and supervising master electricians. TDLR requires experience to be verified by supervising master electricians, using its experience verification form or acceptable supporting documentation. If you change employers or supervisors, retain their contact details and any records needed to substantiate the hours.
A practical record should let you explain where the hours came from and who can confirm them. Keep a running log rather than a single total: note the employer and dates for each period, the hours you are claiming, and the relevant supervisor’s name and contact information. Save employment records and copies of verification documents as you go. Before submitting an application, compare your own log with the information each supervisor can verify and resolve gaps or discrepancies while the people and records are still accessible.

Training hours and licensure hours are not interchangeable just because both involve electrical education. Confirm with TDLR how a particular program, work assignment, or credential applies before counting it toward the 8,000-hour requirement. If your route involves an approved JEEP, use the applicable rule and program approval rather than assuming all classroom hours count.

These options are not equivalent. A registered apprenticeship training program combines structured instruction with work-based learning; an ordinary trade-school course may provide useful instruction but is not automatically a registered apprenticeship or a TDLR-approved JEEP. The JEEP pathway is a new, specifically approved education option with a defined training credit under rules effective July 1, 2026.
| Route | What to verify | How training applies | Licensing outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conventional supervised-work route | That work is properly supervised and the hours can be documented and verified by a Texas-licensed master electrician. | Standard journeyman requirement is 8,000 documented on-the-job training hours; exam eligibility may be sought at 7,000 hours. | Does not itself grant a license; the applicant must satisfy applicable requirements and pass the journeyman exam. |
| Registered apprenticeship training program | That the specific provider and program meet TDLR’s registration requirements; do not rely on the word “apprenticeship” in marketing alone. | Do not assume a single credit amount for every program. Confirm how the work and training apply to the license requirements. | Training may support a licensing pathway, but enrollment or completion is not itself a journeyman license. |
| Approved JEEP | That both the program and its curriculum have department approval as an accelerated journeyman electrician education program. | Under the 2026 adopted rule, graduates receive 4,000 hours of training credit toward on-the-job training requirements. | Graduates may qualify for an alternate basis for exam eligibility; they must still satisfy remaining applicable requirements, including examination and required training. |
| Career and technology education (CTE) program | That it is the specific TDLR CTE pathway, not a JEEP or a registered apprenticeship described under another label. | TDLR’s CTE guidance says at least 80 percent of practical experience must be outside the classroom, supervised by a licensed master electrician on behalf of a licensed electrical contractor. | TDLR describes CTE pathways that include residential wireman licensure; outcomes and requirements differ from JEEP and the standard journeyman route. |
TDLR sets standards for apprentice training program providers. A provider must demonstrate recognition by the Texas Workforce Commission or Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, registration with the U.S. Department of Labor, or compliance with a standardized craft-training program that meets U.S. Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship standards. Review the TDLR apprentice program provider requirements and verify the status of the specific course before enrolling.
For a JEEP, Texas adopted rules establishing an “accelerated journeyman electrician education program.” The rules require department approval of both the program and curriculum and allow graduates 4,000 hours of training credit. The Texas Register explanation notes that the adopted credit was increased from the proposed 3,000 hours. This is not a blanket credit for trade-school attendance: the program must be approved under the rule, and graduates must meet the remaining applicable requirements. See the TDLR July 2026 adopted-rules announcement and the June 26, 2026 Texas Register adopted rules.
Do not confuse JEEP with TDLR’s existing CTE guidance. The agency describes CTE pathways that include residential wireman licensure and sets a practical-experience condition for that route. That is a different program and licensing outcome from JEEP. Check the exact program type and the target license before comparing course descriptions. - Is this program currently registered or approved by the relevant Texas authority, and under which category: registered apprenticeship, JEEP, or CTE?
- Which portions are classroom instruction, lab practice, and paid or supervised on-the-job training?
- Who supervises the work, and can that person verify hours for the license route you intend to pursue?
- What specific training credit, if any, applies under current TDLR rules?
- Does completion lead to exam eligibility, help satisfy a training requirement, or provide instruction without a direct licensing credit?
- What are the tuition, schedule, location, admissions requirements, and job-placement terms? These are provider-specific and should be confirmed directly.
Compare the routes on more than their advertised duration. Ask whether work is part of the program or must be found separately, how hours are documented, and whether the provider can identify the current approval status in writing. Also compare location, schedule, admissions requirements, tuition and other costs, and any job-placement terms. No standard tuition or universal placement promise is established, so request current details from each provider rather than treating a marketing estimate as a licensing guarantee.
Do not choose a course based only on the words “electrician program,” “journeyman,” or “apprenticeship” in its name. The program’s official status, supervision, and outcome matter more than its marketing label.
How much does it cost to get an electrician license in Texas?
The costs established in the current application guidance include a $20 apprentice application fee and a $30 journeyman application fee. These are licensing application fees, not a full estimate of the cost of becoming an electrician. Confirm amounts and payment instructions on the live TDLR pages before applying, since fees and forms can change.

Training costs are provider-specific. No standard tuition amount for trade schools, registered apprenticeship programs, or JEEPs is established, nor are current individual program prices verified. Ask each provider for tuition, required materials or other charges, schedule, and any terms connected to work placement. Do not assume a course fee includes licensing fees or that paying for a course guarantees exam eligibility or a license.
How do I apply for and pass the Texas journeyman electrician exam?
Once you meet the applicable exam-eligibility requirements, submit the journeyman application and supporting experience documentation to TDLR. The department reviews the application and fee; approved applicants receive notice that they may take the licensing exam. Follow the current application instructions for acceptable verification, fee payment, and exam scheduling.
TDLR says the journeyman exam has separate knowledge and calculations portions. Prepare for both, and use TDLR’s current exam information and bulletin for the tested topics, reference materials, and applicable code edition. A January 2026 TDLR staff report said exam questions were being re-referenced to the 2026 National Electrical Code and that updated exams were scheduled for September 1, 2026. Since that scheduled date has passed, do not assume the current exam uses a particular edition based only on the earlier schedule; check TDLR’s current electrician exam information. The January staff report is available as a TDLR Electrical Safety and Licensing Advisory Board staff report dated January 29, 2026.

Application and exam problems to avoid
- Applying with the exam threshold but not the full experience requirement: 7,000 hours allows an eligible applicant to apply for exam eligibility; it does not replace the standard 8,000-hour training requirement.
- Missing or incomplete verification: Reconcile your records with supervisors before applying. An unsupported estimate is not the same as documented, verified experience.
- Using an outdated exam reference: Check the live bulletin for the current code edition and test details rather than relying on older study materials or a past schedule.
- Assuming school attendance qualifies you: Confirm the exact approval category and licensing effect of the program. Ordinary coursework is not automatically a training credit or license.
How do electrician license renewals and continuing education work?
Texas electrician licenses are valid for one year and require annual renewal. TDLR generally requires four hours of approved continuing education for covered licensees. The education includes the National Electrical Code, Texas electrician law and rules, and electrical safety. Check the department’s current renewal guidance for the requirements that apply to your license type and renewal cycle: TDLR electrician continuing education.
Apprentices enrolled in a department-registered electrical apprenticeship training course have an alternative route for meeting renewal education requirements. This is specific to enrollment in a department-registered course; do not assume any electrical class or employer training qualifies for the alternative. Confirm course registration and renewal treatment with TDLR.
What does it take to become a master electrician in Texas?
TDLR generally requires a master electrician applicant to have held a journeyman electrician license for at least two years and to document 12,000 hours of on-the-job training under a Texas-licensed master electrician. The experience and license-history requirements are separate milestones; meeting the hours alone does not establish eligibility. TDLR cautions that journeyman industrial electrician experience does not qualify for a master electrician license.
Before relying on a particular combination of work history and licenses, review the TDLR master electrician application guidance and preserve the records needed to support the application. Requirements can be updated, so use the current department application instructions when you are ready to apply.
How long does it take to become an electrician in Texas?
There is no single calendar timeline established by the required-hour figures. The standard journeyman route depends on how consistently you can obtain qualifying supervised work, how training is documented, and when you meet application and exam requirements. An approved JEEP changes the training-credit calculation but does not by itself establish a fixed completion date. Ask providers about their schedules and openings, and plan around the documented requirements rather than an advertised estimate.
If you are comparing routes, separate three questions: how quickly you can begin working under the apprentice license; how the program or employer will provide and document qualifying training; and when you can meet the applicable exam and license requirements. Those factors vary by work arrangement and provider, so a universal promise of completion in a set number of months would be misleading.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need trade school to become an electrician in Texas?
No. TDLR says you can apply for an apprentice license without prior experience or an exam. Trade school may provide instruction, but a school certificate is not itself a Texas electrician license, and an ordinary course is not automatically a registered apprenticeship or approved JEEP.
How many hours do I need to become a journeyman electrician in Texas?
The standard requirement is 8,000 documented on-the-job training hours under a Texas-licensed master electrician. TDLR allows eligible applicants with 7,000 hours to apply for exam eligibility, but 7,000 hours is not the full standard training requirement.
Can I get an electrical apprentice license in Texas with no experience?
Yes. TDLR says no prior experience or exam is required. The apprentice license allows work under the general supervision of a Texas-licensed master electrician, journeyman electrician, or residential wireman. Check the current application page for the fee and requirements.
What is the 2026 JEEP route?
It is the accelerated journeyman electrician education program pathway established by Texas rules effective July 1, 2026. Both the program and curriculum require department approval. Graduates of an approved JEEP may qualify for exam eligibility and receive 4,000 hours of training credit; not every trade-school program qualifies.
How much is the Texas electrician apprentice application fee?
TDLR’s apprentice application page describes a $20 fee. Application fees can change, so confirm the live TDLR page before submitting an application.
The Bottom Line
Start with the TDLR apprentice license, then build and document qualifying supervised experience. The conventional journeyman route is 8,000 hours, with exam eligibility available at 7,000 hours; the 2026 JEEP option is distinct and only applies when both the program and curriculum are approved. Verify program status, current fees, exam references, and renewal requirements directly with TDLR before making a training or licensing decision.
