For Alaska Fish Fertilizer 5-1-1, shake the concentrate, dilute it at the rate for the plant type, and apply the mixture every three weeks during the growing season. Use the specific label rates below; the product label says not to store mixed solution. Directions are different for indoor plants and several outdoor categories.
Alaska Fish Fertilizer 5-1-1 dilution rates
These rates and coverage amounts come from the one-quart product label, whose artwork is dated July 2020. Check the directions on your own container in case its label revision or package directions differ.
| Plant category | Label rate | Label coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Vegetables, bedding plants, bulbs, annuals | 2 tablespoons per gallon of water | 25 square feet of soil |
| Perennials, roses, vines, berries | 3 tablespoons per gallon of water | 25 square feet of soil |
| Shrubs | 3 tablespoons per gallon of water | Per 2 feet of plant height |
| Root vegetables | 1 tablespoon per gallon of water | 25 square feet of soil |
| Outdoor container plants | 1 tablespoon per gallon of water | 1 cubic foot of soil |
| Trees | 4 tablespoons per gallon of water | 25 square feet of soil |
| Large indoor plants, during growing season | 2 teaspoons per quart of water | Not stated on the label |
| Flowering indoor plants, during growing season | 1 teaspoon per quart of water | Not stated on the label |
Measure the fertilizer and water according to the applicable row, then apply the diluted mixture to the soil. The label does not provide a foliar (leaf-spray) rate, so do not assume these soil directions are also directions for spraying leaves.
How often to apply it
The label’s general schedule is every three weeks during the growing season. Indoor plant rates are listed specifically for use during the growing season as well; use the flowering or large indoor plant category that fits your plant.

Mix and handle the fertilizer safely
- Shake before measuring. The label says, “SHAKE WELL: Ingredients may separate during storage.”
- Dilute before use. The label states: “Apply only when diluted with water in accordance with directions.”
- Do not keep a premixed batch. The label says, “Do not store mixed solution.” Mix only what you can use, and use or discard any leftover mixture rather than storing it.
- Follow the rate rather than relying on the front-label phrase. The label says “Won’t Burn!”; that is a manufacturer claim, not a guarantee against harm from concentrated or excessive application.
- Store the concentrate away from excess heat. Follow the container’s storage directions.
What if you are fertilizing a lawn?
The reviewed label does not provide a lawn application rate. Do not apply one of the plant-category rates to grass or rely on an older third-party manual unless the current directions on your container or a current manufacturer source specifically supports it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the 5-1-1 label tells you about the product
The product is Alaska Fish Fertilizer 5-1-1. Its label gives a guaranteed analysis of 5.0% total nitrogen, 1.0% available phosphate (P₂O₅), and 1.0% soluble potash (K₂O), and lists fish solubles and phosphoric acid as nutrient sources. It identifies 0.75% slowly available nitrogen from fish solubles. These are label figures, not independent measurements. The label also identifies the fertilizer as OMRI Listed; that wording should not be treated as proof that the fertilizer itself is certified organic.
