To control entry through a swing gate, pair a correctly sized gate operator with an access device—such as a keypad, card reader, telephone-entry unit, or managed credential system—and design the safety equipment and pedestrian route at the same time. The operator moves the gate; the access device authorizes or signals entry. Neither substitutes for the other, and compatibility, entrapment protection, control placement, and local requirements all matter.
How swing-gate access control works
A typical system combines the gate leaf, an operator and controller, an access device, and safety equipment. When a user presents an accepted credential, the access device sends a signal to the operator controller, which starts the gate’s programmed movement. The precise wiring and signal type depend on the equipment.
UL describes UL 325 as the standard commonly used for automatic gate operators and systems, and UL 294 as addressing access-control system units. Access components can include keypads, card readers, scanners, communication links, and biometric devices. UL 294 also addresses aspects such as digital security and performance, including remote smart-device access and software or firmware upgrades. UL Solutions explains how the standards relate.
Choose an entry method that fits the site
| Access method | Useful when | Plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Keypad and PIN | Residents, staff, or regular visitors need a code-based entry option. | How codes are issued, changed, and revoked; outdoor suitability; and whether the controller accepts the keypad’s output. |
| Card or fob reader | Users can carry an assigned credential that can be withdrawn if lost or no longer authorized. | Credential administration, reader placement, wiring, power, and controller compatibility. |
| Telephone-entry unit | Visitors need to contact an occupant or site manager to request entry. | Communication method, power and network needs, who can grant entry, and how the unit connects to the operator. |
| Biometric or other scanner | The site has a defined need for this credential type and can support its administration. | Device-specific requirements, credential handling, privacy considerations, and compatibility. |
| Connected or managed access system | Operators need remote administration, event history, or management across multiple entrances. | Network availability, account administration, cybersecurity, ongoing service needs, and the controller interface. |
These are categories, not a guarantee that a particular reader works with a particular operator. Before selecting equipment, confirm the reader’s output and wiring, controller inputs, operating voltage, outdoor rating, communication method, and support for the required safety devices in the manuals or with a qualified installer. UL’s discussion of access-control components and the manufacturers’ product information do not certify arbitrary equipment combinations.

Size the operator for the gate and its use
Operator capacity is model-specific. Check the gate’s leaf length and weight, opening geometry, mounting arrangement, expected traffic and duty, available AC or solar power, backup needs, and exposure to weather. A rating for one operator is not a general limit for swing gates.
For a concrete example, All-O-Matic publishes the SW-325DC PRO with a maximum gate weight of 2,000 lb and maximum gate length of 22 ft. Its product page also describes AC and solar power options, integrated battery backup, and battery-backup capacity of up to 250 cycles. Those figures are the manufacturer’s specifications for that model, not a sizing rule for other operators. See the SW-325DC PRO product page and have the proposed operator selected for the actual gate and use conditions.

The LED backlight automatically illuminates the keypad under low-light conditions. The battery lasts up to 2 years at 5 activations per day.
- Safe to Use - Supports up to 64 individual sets of 4-digit access codes, including the temporary and permanent codes. Temporary password is easy to manage and programmed for the guests / deliveryman. You can add this TC188 Keypad on the entrance, exit, or both sides of your gate. Our advanced TOPENS code technology will prevent unwanted entry, ensuring multiple protection & safety. Additionally, this dual channel transmitter design will access two different openers separately.
- Wide Compatibility - Works with all TOPENS gate openers, and compatible with most third party swing / sliding gate opener whose control board accepts “Normally Open Dry Contact” signal. TC188 can be powered by the 9VDC carbon battery (included in the package), or the control board of the gate opener, or by the external 9-30VAC/DC power source. Kindly note that this keypad works with the gate openers only, and does not support other door access control system.
- Wireless & Wired Mode - Comes with a 6F22 carbon battery, the wireless mode is recommended for less wire connections. Easy DIY installation & simple programming within minutes. Connected with our ERM12 External Receiver (sold separately), this digital keypad will operate the third-party gate opener in this mode. On the other hand, the wired mode is a good solution in locations where frequency interference is occurred or where the control box is installed far away from the gate operator.
Design entrapment protection into the system
An access credential does not make a moving gate safe. Entrapment protection must address the hazards created by the particular gate, operator, and site. Depending on the design, external protection may include photoelectric sensors, contact-edge sensors, or a combination. The manufacturer’s manual, current applicable requirements, and a site-specific hazard review determine the appropriate devices, locations, monitoring, and setup.
LiftMaster’s RSW12UL product page says external entrapment-protection devices must be added to meet UL 325 requirements and names photoelectric or edge sensors as examples. DASMA’s guidance likewise describes non-contact sensors, contact sensors, or a combination as possible secondary protection. That does not establish a universal sensor layout: use the operator’s instructions and a qualified installer rather than choosing or positioning sensors from a general description. See the LiftMaster RSW12UL product information and DASMA’s gate-operator guidance.

Place controls where users can see the moving gate
Locate operating controls far enough from the gate that a person using them cannot touch the moving gate, while retaining a full view of the gate area during movement. DASMA’s Spring 2003 control-placement article says six feet is generally recommended, but the suitable distance can vary. Reset controls need to be in line of sight, and outdoor or easily accessible controls need a security feature to prevent unauthorized use. Follow the current operator instructions and site requirements for the actual installation. DASMA’s control-placement guidance provides the details.
Provide a separate route for pedestrians
A vehicular swing gate should not be treated as a pedestrian entrance. DASMA says pedestrians using a vehicular gate must use a separate entrance. Plan a safe, convenient pedestrian route rather than expecting people on foot to pass through the vehicle gate’s operating path. DASMA’s gate-operator guidance addresses this separation.

Check listing and local requirements
UL’s summary states that the 2024 International Building Code, International Residential Code, and International Fire Code, as well as NFPA 1 and NFPA 101, require installed gate operators to be listed to UL 325. It also describes UL 294 or UL 1034 listing requirements for certain special locking devices under the 2024 IBC and NFPA 101. These statements concern the named editions; they do not establish what applies at every address. Adoption, amendments, gate use, and the local authority’s interpretation can change the requirements.
Before purchasing or installing equipment, confirm the locally adopted code editions and amendments, operator and access-unit listing needs, egress and fire-access provisions, and any approval required by the authority having jurisdiction. UL explains the relationship between operator safety and access-control security in its standards overview.

Plan the installation around the whole system
- Document the site: Record the gate’s dimensions, weight, opening direction and geometry, mounting conditions, traffic needs, power availability, and pedestrian route.
- Select the operator: Match its published capacity and duty to the measured gate and expected use; confirm power and backup arrangements.
- Choose how entry is authorized: Decide whether users need PINs, cards or fobs, visitor calling, biometric credentials, or remote management.
- Verify every interface: Check manuals for wiring, signal type, controller inputs, power, outdoor ratings, communications, and safety-device support before treating components as compatible.
- Design safety and control placement: Have the entrapment hazards assessed, specify required protection, place controls for safe distance and sightlines, and keep reset controls visible to the gate.
- Confirm approvals and commissioning: Check local requirements and have the complete system installed and tested according to the operator’s instructions and applicable rules.
