Knurling a flat workpiece is possible with a forming tool designed for use on a milling machine. Dorian’s catalog lists its MMKT as a tool for flat surfaces and recommends feeding the wheel into the work until the pattern forms, then feeding across the surface. The right approach depends on the part’s geometry, the required texture and whether the pattern is meant for grip, appearance or retention.
Use a tool designed for flat work
Much conventional knurling guidance assumes a cylindrical workpiece rotating in a lathe. For a stationary flat part, use a milling-machine knurling tool specifically intended for planar work rather than assuming a standard lathe holder will suit the job.

Dorian’s MMKT catalog entry describes a milling-machine forming knurling tool for flat surfaces. It lists straight and diamond-pattern configurations and a ground Weldon shank for milling holders. This is a documented tooling example, not a product test or a guarantee of compatibility with a particular machine. Check the current manufacturer instructions and confirm the holder fit before setup. Dorian tool catalog

Choose the texture for its purpose
Decide what the knurl needs to do before choosing a wheel. A pattern intended to improve grip may call for a different texture from one chosen for appearance or to contribute to an interference fit. The drawing guidance from the Precision Machined Products Association (PMPA) recommends specifying the pattern, approximate teeth per inch and intended use; include finished dimensions and tolerance limits when they matter. #1 Best Overall
- Material: super hard material More durable and efficient than ordinary knurling knives
- Features: 3 sets of coarse, medium and fine super hard wheels rolled with different patterns
- Use: Suitable for all metal products appearance of the embossing to beautiful, non-slip role
- Package: Package contains 3 different pattern sizes (0.5mm 1.0mm 2.0mm 2 of each size), 1 toolholder and accessories.
- Note: Adequate lubrication will extend the life of the tool
- Identify the area of the flat part that needs texture.
- Specify straight or diamond pattern, and give the approximate scale or teeth per inch when known.
- State the purpose, such as grip, appearance or fit/retention.
- Include the material and any critical finished dimensions or tolerances on the drawing.
- Define how the finished surface will be checked for acceptance; there is no universal flat-surface parameter set established by the cited guidance.
Follow the tool maker’s forming sequence
For its MMKT tool, Dorian recommends using a beveled knurl wheel, feeding the wheel into the blank until the desired pattern is generated, and then end-feeding across the work. Treat that as the catalog’s guidance for its tool, not a universal recipe for every milling setup. The catalog does not establish general speeds, feeds or penetration values for an unspecified machine, material and part.
- Confirm compatibility. Check the tool, wheel, milling holder and machine against current manufacturer instructions.
- Select the wheel. Choose the pattern and configuration that match the drawing and intended function.
- Form the pattern. Use the maker’s specified setup to feed into the blank until the pattern forms.
- Cover the area. End-feed across the work as directed for the tool, then inspect the textured area against the drawing’s requirements.
Forming and cutting are different processes
A forming knurl presses or rolls a pattern into the material. Cut knurling uses sharp-edged cutters to remove material and create a profile. SFS describes cut knurling as an option where profile-quality demands are high, but its detailed instructions concern lathe work; they should not be treated as a setup procedure for a flat milling job. - Use of product- A lathe knurling tool is primarily used to create a textured surface on a workpiece, typically made of metal. This process, known as knurling, serves multiple functions. Firstly, it enhances grip by adding ridges to the surface, making it easier to handle or manipulate the workpiece. This is particularly useful for components like handles on tools or knobs on machinery where a secure grip is essential. Secondly, knurling can serve decorative purposes, adding visual interest to the finished product. Additionally, in industrial settings, knurling is sometimes used for identification purposes, providing a distinctive texture that helps differentiate between similar parts.
