Thomas Savery’s 1702 Miner’s Friend describes an early steam-powered pump: steam pressure pushed water out of a receiver, while cooling condensed steam in a second receiver so atmospheric pressure could refill it. The alternating cycle was proposed for draining mines and supplying water to estates and houses. Savery’s account explains the design and its promised uses; later historical analysis identifies important practical limits, including fuel consumption and pressure-vessel risk.
What was Savery’s Miner’s Friend?
The Miner’s Friend; or, An Engine to Raise Water by Fire was published in London by S. Crouch in 1702. Savery’s book presents the engine, explains how it could be installed in mines, discusses other possible uses, and responds to objections. It is both a primary account by the inventor and a sales-minded argument for the machine—not an independent test report. The bibliographic record and digitized text document the 1702 publication.
Savery patented his design on 2 July 1698. The American Physical Society’s historical account says Parliament extended the patent for 21 years in 1699, beyond its original 14-year term. The APS account places the patent in the history of early steam engines.
How did the engine raise water?
Savery’s drawing labels a boiler, steam pipes, two receivers, valves, a force pipe and a sucking pipe. The receivers were vessels rather than the cylinder and piston used in later atmospheric engines. One receiver expelled water under steam pressure while the other was being cooled and refilled; the operator then switched their roles.

- Make steam. A boiler supplied steam through pipes to a receiver containing water.
- Force water upward. Steam pressure acted on the water in that receiver and drove it through the force pipe to a higher outlet.
- Condense steam in the other receiver. The operator applied cooling water to the emptied receiver. The steam inside condensed, reducing the pressure in the vessel.
- Refill by atmospheric pressure. Air pressure on the source water pushed it up the suction pipe and into the cooled receiver. “Suction,” Savery’s period term, describes the effect; atmospheric pressure supplies the force.
- Alternate the receivers. The operator changed the regulator and repeated the sequence with the other receiver, aiming for a continuing outflow.
Savery described the refill stage this way: “the water, falling on p, causes, by its coolness, the steam, which had such great force just before to its elastic power, to condense, and become a vacuum or empty apace, so that the vessel, p, is, by the external pressure of the atmosphere, or what is vulgarly called suction, immediately refilled”. The quotation preserves the original wording of his 1702 text.
Why propose it for mines and water supply?
Mine flooding was a serious problem in late-seventeenth-century England. Before steam pumps, water was commonly raised with buckets and horse-driven machinery, according to the APS historical account. Savery’s title explicitly promised a method for fixing the engine in mines, where water had to be lifted from workings to the surface.

The treatise also considers water mills, estates, fens and household supply. The APS account says Savery’s pump found use supplying estates and country houses, but mine operators did not immediately adopt it. This distinction matters: Savery’s book describes intended applications, while later historical accounts report a more limited pattern of uptake.
What limited the design?
The APS account identifies practical problems that should not be confused with concessions in Savery’s promotional text. Contemporary manufacturing made reliably tight joints difficult; imperfect seals contributed to explosion risk. The machine also consumed too much fuel to be economically viable for mine drainage, and it required cooling and reheating between strokes. These constraints made a pressure-driven arrangement difficult to operate at the scale and duty mining demanded.

Savery’s treatise discusses performance and usefulness, but the sources here do not establish independently measured real-world lift, output, efficiency or operating cost for his engine. His claims should therefore be read as claims made by the inventor, not as verified field measurements.
How was Savery’s engine different from Newcomen’s?
Newcomen’s later atmospheric engine used a piston moving in a cylinder. Steam was condensed in the cylinder, and atmospheric pressure acting on the piston powered the stroke. Savery’s arrangement instead alternated steam pressure and condensation in separate receiver vessels to move water; it did not use a piston. The APS account dates a working prototype by Newcomen and John Calley to 1712 and notes that Newcomen’s engine was marketed under Savery’s broad patent, which covered surface condensation.

| Feature | Savery’s Miner’s Friend | Newcomen’s atmospheric engine |
|---|---|---|
| Working arrangement | Two receivers and valves alternated between discharge and refill. | A piston moved in a cylinder. |
| How water was moved | Steam pressure expelled water; condensation let atmospheric pressure refill a receiver. | Condensation in the cylinder let atmospheric pressure move the piston. |
| Historical context | Patented in 1698; proposed for mines and other water-raising uses, with reported uptake including estate and house supply. | A working Newcomen–Calley prototype is dated to 1712 by the APS account; the design became influential in pumping-engine history. |
The Dictionary of National Biography describes a Newcomen engine shown in a 1719 print: its cylinder was 21 inches in diameter, the engine stood 7 feet 10 inches high, it made 12 strokes per minute, and it raised 50 gallons from 156 feet. The entry calculates that performance as 5½ horsepower. Those figures refer to the Newcomen engine represented in that historical print, not to Savery’s machine. The DNB entry dates from 1885–1900 and should be read as a historical report of that representation, not as a modern test.
