Taipei 101’s huge gold sphere is a tuned mass damper—a roughly 660-metric-ton suspended steel mass that helps reduce the tower’s sway. During the magnitude-7.4 Hualien earthquake on April 3, 2024, the damper moved relative to the skyscraper and likely helped control lateral motion and occupant discomfort. But it did not make the building earthquake-proof, and it was not the only reason Taipei 101 remained standing.
What happened to Taipei 101 during the 2024 earthquake?
The earthquake commonly associated with the viral images and headlines struck Taiwan on April 3, 2024, local time. The U.S. Geological Survey measured the Hualien earthquake at magnitude 7.4; Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration also classified it as a magnitude-7.4 event. It was the largest earthquake in Taiwan since the 1999 Jiji, or Chi-Chi, earthquake.

Reports after the earthquake stated that Taipei 101 remained standing and operational. Footage and photographs also drew attention to the building’s enormous spherical damper, which is designed to move as the tower sways.
That distinction matters. The available public information does not establish a precise percentage of movement that the damper reduced during this particular earthquake. Nor does the tower’s survival prove that the sphere alone prevented damage or collapse. The defensible conclusion is narrower: the damper was one part of a much larger structural system, and it likely helped limit the building’s motion.

What is the giant sphere inside Taipei 101?
Taipei 101 is a 101-story, 508-meter supertall building in Taipei, Taiwan. Completed in 2004, it was the world’s tallest building from 2004 until 2010, according to Thornton Tomasetti, one of the firms associated with its structural engineering.
The visible sphere is a tuned mass damper, often abbreviated TMD. It is made from a suspended steel mass weighing approximately 660 metric tons—about 728 to 730 U.S. tons. The system hangs from around the tower’s 92nd floor and is visible to visitors in the observatory area.

People often call it a giant pendulum, which is a useful visual description. Technically, however, it is not simply a heavy ball hanging freely in the building. It is a carefully engineered vibration-control system with:
- a large secondary mass;
- a suspension arrangement that allows controlled movement;
- tuning to the building’s important vibration modes; and
- damping components that dissipate energy and reduce unwanted oscillation.
How does a tuned mass damper work?
Imagine standing on a moving platform while holding a heavy object on a flexible line. If the platform shifts in one direction, the heavy object tends to lag behind because of inertia. With the right mass, suspension, and timing, that relative movement can oppose some of the platform’s motion.
A tuned mass damper applies that idea to a skyscraper. When Taipei 101 begins to sway, the building moves first and the suspended mass moves relative to the building. The resulting dynamic force acts against part of the tower’s movement. Damping then removes energy from the oscillation, helping the motion become smaller and settle more quickly.
The word tuned is important. The mass is not effective merely because it is heavy. Engineers select its characteristics to interact with the tower’s dominant vibration modes. A damper must also be designed for the range of movements and loading conditions the building may experience.

In Taipei 101, the system serves two related purposes:
- Wind response: Super-tall buildings can sway noticeably in strong winds even when there is no structural danger. Reducing that motion improves comfort for people working or visiting high floors.
- Earthquake response: During seismic excitation, the damper can help reduce the amplitude and duration of some building movements.
Taipei 101’s own structural description presents the device as a wind damper that absorbs smaller movements under normal conditions and suppresses much of the more violent swinging caused by strong winds and earthquakes. It is therefore inaccurate to describe it as an “earthquake-proofing ball.”
Did the pendulum stop Taipei 101 from moving?
No. A tuned mass damper works by moving as the building moves. Visible motion from the sphere is not evidence that the device failed; it is evidence that the system was responding to the tower’s motion.
It also did not stop the earthquake itself, hold the tower rigid, or guarantee that every interior element would be undamaged. A skyscraper must flex and absorb energy rather than behave like an immovable block. The damper helps manage that response; it does not eliminate it.

Some secondary descriptions repeat a figure of about 40 percent for movement reduction. That number should not be presented as a measurement from the April 2024 earthquake. In the available research, it is a general design or educational claim, not a verified event-specific result. Likewise, precise claims about how far the sphere moved during the Hualien earthquake require an instrumented event report and a clear explanation of the measurement method.
The pendulum was only one part of Taipei 101’s earthquake design
The building’s survival cannot responsibly be attributed to a single visible component. Taipei 101 combines the damper with a deep foundation, a stiff and ductile structural frame, multiple systems for transferring lateral forces, and carefully designed connections.

Deep foundations
Taipei 101’s official structural description identifies 380 piles extending approximately 80 meters below ground. The deepest piles reach roughly 30 meters into bedrock. These foundations transfer the tower’s enormous gravity loads and lateral demands into the ground.
Foundations do not prevent a building from shaking, but they are fundamental to controlling how the structure interacts with the soil. A damper high in the tower cannot compensate for an inadequate foundation.
A braced core and giant columns
The tower uses a braced structural core, large columns, and a ductile steel structural system. Its central structural elements help resist vertical and lateral forces, while ductility allows parts of the system to deform and absorb energy without sudden brittle failure.
That is a key principle in earthquake-resistant construction: the objective is generally not to keep every component perfectly rigid. It is to provide a predictable load path and enough strength, stiffness, ductility, and redundancy to withstand demanding movement.
Outriggers and perimeter framing
Outriggers connect the interior core to exterior columns. This allows the outside of the tower to participate in resisting overturning and lateral movement instead of leaving the core to carry the entire demand alone.
Thornton Tomasetti also identifies perimeter moment frames, special core connections, and other structural features as part of Taipei 101’s seismic and wind-resisting design. Together, these components distribute forces through the building and control its deformation.

Why wind mattered so much in the damper’s design
Earthquakes attract the headlines, but wind is a constant engineering problem for a 508-meter tower. Even a structurally safe building can be uncomfortable if occupants feel repeated acceleration or long-period swaying high above the ground.
For that reason, Taipei 101’s damper was not designed only for rare earthquakes. Its everyday role includes reducing wind-induced movement and improving comfort. The same basic vibration-control concept can be useful under different types of dynamic loading, although the exact response depends on the frequency, direction, duration, and intensity of the excitation.
This is also why the sphere should not be described as a simple counterweight. A fixed counterweight mainly adds mass. A tuned mass damper is intended to move in a controlled way and interact dynamically with the structure.
What the 2024 earthquake demonstrates—and what it does not
| Reasonable conclusion | Overstatement to avoid |
|---|---|
| The damper was designed to reduce movement from wind and earthquakes. | The sphere made Taipei 101 earthquake-proof. |
| The sphere’s movement is part of its intended operation. | The sphere stopped Taipei 101 from moving. |
| The damper likely helped control the tower’s response during the Hualien earthquake. | The damper alone saved the building. |
| Taipei 101’s foundation, core, columns, outriggers, frames, connections, and damper worked as a system. | Post-earthquake survival proves a specific percentage of protection from the sphere. |
| The building remained standing after a major earthquake. | Every component, façade element, fixture, or interior space was necessarily undamaged. |
For construction professionals and building owners, the broader lesson is more valuable than the viral image: resilience comes from coordinated design. A vibration-control device can improve performance, but it must be matched to the building’s structural system, foundation, expected loading, maintenance requirements, and acceptable movement limits.

Yes. Tuned mass dampers are used or considered in tall buildings, bridges, floors, towers, and other structures where vibration control matters. The implementation does not have to look like Taipei 101’s giant gold sphere. Systems may use pendulums, sliding masses, fluid tanks, active controls, or other arrangements.
The appropriate solution depends on the structure’s mass, stiffness, natural frequencies, damping, geometry, site conditions, wind climate, seismic hazard, and intended occupancy. A device selected for wind comfort in a supertall tower is not automatically a substitute for conventional seismic detailing, foundation engineering, or code-compliant lateral-force-resisting systems.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the giant ball in Taipei 101?
It is a tuned mass damper: a suspended steel mass weighing about 660 metric tons, or approximately 728 to 730 U.S. tons. It moves relative to the tower to reduce sway from strong winds and earthquakes.
Did Taipei 101’s pendulum save it during the 2024 Taiwan earthquake?
The damper likely helped reduce the tower’s motion, but it did not act alone. Taipei 101’s deep piles, braced core, columns, outriggers, perimeter frames, special connections, and ductile structural system were also essential. No public evidence reviewed here isolates a precise percentage of protection provided by the damper during that earthquake.
Was the 2024 Taiwan earthquake magnitude 7.4?
Yes. The April 3, 2024 Hualien earthquake was measured at magnitude 7.4 by the U.S. Geological Survey and classified as magnitude 7.4 by Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration.
Does the pendulum prevent Taipei 101 from shaking?
No. The damper moves because the building is moving. Its purpose is to oppose and damp part of that motion, not to make the tower rigid or stop an earthquake.
Is Taipei 101 earthquake-proof?
No building should be described casually as earthquake-proof. Taipei 101 was engineered to manage demanding wind and seismic forces through a complete structural system that includes the damper, foundation, core, frames, columns, outriggers, connections, and ductile detailing.
The Bottom Line
Taipei 101’s giant pendulum helped manage the tower’s movement during Taiwan’s 2024 earthquake, but it was not a magic ball. The roughly 660-metric-ton tuned mass damper is the most visible part of a much larger resilience strategy—one that also depends on deep foundations, a braced core, giant columns, outriggers, perimeter frames, special connections, and ductile structural design.
