Taipei 101’s gold sphere is a tuned mass damper: a 660-metric-ton mass suspended inside the tower that moves relative to the building to counter some of its sway. That is roughly 728 U.S. short tons, often rounded to 730. The evidence does not show that the sphere alone kept Taipei 101 from falling in a Chinese earthquake; it is one part of a larger structural system.
First, separate the earthquake in China from the building in Taiwan
Taipei 101 stands in Taipei, Taiwan. A technical field-measurement study published in January 2011 analyzed the tower’s monitored response during several events, including the May 12, 2008 Wenchuan earthquake in Sichuan, China. That establishes that the earthquake was included in the analysis; it does not establish that the damper alone prevented a collapse.
Reports of the damper visibly moving during earthquakes refer to events in Taiwan, not the Wenchuan earthquake. Keeping those incidents distinct matters: measured movement shows that the device responded, but does not by itself prove what would have happened to the tower without it.
What the ball does
A tuned mass damper is a secondary mass designed to move in relation to the structure it is installed in. As a tall building sways, the damper’s motion can oppose some of the building’s movement and reduce vibration. Taipei 101 describes its installation as a “wind damping ball” and identifies its technical name as a tuned mass damper (TMD). The field-measurement study describes the main damper’s primary purpose as suppressing wind-induced vibrations.

- Material: Made of high quality soft plastic, good toughness, perfect damping result.
- Function: Effectively reduce the sensitiveness of flight control, make flight more stable and carefree.
- Fit for: Newest F4 and F7 32bt controller RC multirotors.
That does not make the sphere a stand-alone earthquake shield. The study describes Taipei 101 as a structural system with internal and external components. The damper is one element in that system, and the available evidence does not support attributing the tower’s safety in a particular earthquake to the ball alone.
How Taipei 101’s damper is built
TAIPEI 101’s published specifications describe a sphere about 5.5 meters in diameter and weighing 660 metric tons. It is assembled from 41 layers of solid steel plating, each 12.5 centimeters thick, and hangs centrally between floors 87 and 92. The operator also says each supporting steel cable contains more than 2,000 independent wires and has a safety factor of four. TAIPEI 101’s damper specifications

The headline’s 730-ton figure is a rounded conversion into U.S. short tons: 660 metric tons is approximately 728 short tons. Taipei 101 publishes the mass in metric tons.
What the earthquake records show
Wenchuan, China: an event in the tower’s field analysis
The January 2011 field-measurement paper analyzes Taipei 101’s monitored response to the May 12, 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, alongside data from three typhoons. It is evidence that researchers examined the tower’s seismic response. The paper’s description of the damper emphasizes its primary role in controlling wind-induced vibration; it does not establish a counterfactual claim that the tower would have fallen without the device. Hualien, Taiwan: reported movement in 2019
A Taiwan Central Geological Survey page reproduces a December 2019 report that the damper swung about 20 centimeters to either side during the April 18, 2019 Hualien earthquake. This is a reported measurement of damper movement, not proof that it alone prevented structural failure. Taiwan Central Geological Survey page
Taiwan: a reported event in 2020
The same government page reproduces a December 2020 report of about 15 centimeters of movement in each direction during a Taiwan earthquake. The report compares that motion with the roughly 20 centimeters reported for the 2019 event. These figures describe the damper’s swing in those events; they are not a measure of how much safer the building was.

Hualien, Taiwan: coverage in 2024
Central News Agency coverage dated April 5, 2024 described the 660-metric-ton damper as suspended between floors 87 and 92 while reporting on the Hualien earthquake. That event was in Taiwan, not China.

- Supported: Taipei 101 has a 660-metric-ton tuned mass damper, and a peer-reviewed field study analyzed the tower’s monitored response during the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake.
- Supported with the right qualification: reports describe the damper moving during earthquakes in Taiwan.
- Not established: that the damper alone kept Taipei 101 from falling during the Wenchuan earthquake, or that its movement proves the tower would otherwise have failed.
The accurate engineering takeaway is narrower but still significant: the damper is a large, carefully suspended moving mass intended primarily to suppress wind-induced vibration, and it forms part of a broader system that responds to building motion.
