Solenica’s Lucy was described as a solar-powered robotic mirror that follows the sun and redirects available daylight into a room. It does not generate light: it needs a clear path to sunlight during the day, so where it can be placed—and what room it can illuminate—depends on the building and site.
How Solenica’s Lucy mirror was described to work
In 2015, ELLE Decor reported that photo sensors tracked the sun’s position and that Lucy adjusted its alignment to reflect daylight through a room. The Daily Dot described an orb-shaped device directing sunlight onto a wall or ceiling, where it could spread into the space.
These are journalistic descriptions of the device’s intended operation, not independent measurements or firsthand test results. The underlying idea is straightforward: a sun-tracking mirror redirects sunlight that already reaches it. It cannot supply daylight when the sun is blocked or below the horizon.
What the sunlight requirement means for a building
The Daily Dot reported that Lucy needed to remain in the sun’s path over the course of the day. For a building project, that makes site and placement central considerations: the mirror needs access to sunlight, and its reflected beam must have a route into the room where daylight is wanted.

- Check sun access: nearby buildings, rooflines, trees, and other obstructions may shade a potential location as the sun moves.
- Check the route indoors: a window or other opening must allow redirected light to reach the target interior area.
- Consider room layout: the reported approach was to aim sunlight at a wall or ceiling so it could spread; the coverage did not establish how much light any particular room would receive.
The available coverage does not quantify indoor illuminance, reliability, or energy savings. Those outcomes should not be assumed for a specific home or construction project.
Lucy was not Lucy Norman’s Sun Sill
A separate 2013 WIRED article covered designer Lucy Norman’s Sun Sill, a proof of concept involving five motorized mirrors. That project is distinct from Solenica’s Lucy product; the shared name does not make them the same device.

The Daily Dot reported a planned retail price of $300 in 2015. That is a historical figure, not a current price. The available sources do not establish whether Solenica’s Lucy is currently sold or supported, or provide verified information about warranty, software, replacement parts, or present-day performance. Confirm those details directly with a seller or manufacturer before specifying the device in a project.
