A roofing contractor can introduce skylights and roof windows during a reroofing or repair project, but the useful approach is consultative rather than a routine upsell. Inspect the attic and the rooms below, identify spaces that remain dark, ask whether the homeowner wants more natural light, and only then discuss a daylighting option that can be verified for the roof, room, climate and current code requirements.
The idea comes from Rick Damato’s November 4, 2015 editorial, “Daylighting Offers Holistic Approach for Roofing Contractors”. It is a business-development argument, not a current installation manual, product test or study of sales results. Treat its product examples and revenue discussion as historical context, then perform today’s technical and commercial checks before making a proposal.

What a holistic daylighting conversation means
In this context, “holistic” means looking beyond the roofing material itself. A reroof gives a contractor access to the roof assembly and often prompts a wider conversation about the attic, insulation, ventilation and the rooms affected by the work. Daylighting is one possible part of that conversation, alongside the roof work the customer already requested.

The contractor is not promising that every dark room needs a skylight. The job is to notice a potential need, explain the available direction in plain language and let the homeowner decide whether it belongs in the project. That distinction protects trust: a daylighting suggestion should solve a stated problem or interest, not create an unrelated problem.

Damato’s argument is that homeowners may value a more complete property-improvement discussion even when they are watching the budget. His statement that “Many owners, even the ones who seem the most concerned with price, appreciate a holistic approach to improving their property” is an editorial observation, not a measured customer survey. Use it as a communication principle, not as a guarantee of acceptance.
Why roofing is a natural time to raise daylighting
A reroof can be the least disruptive time to consider a roof window or skylight because the roof covering is already being opened, detailed and restored. That timing may allow a contractor to coordinate the roof opening, flashing work and interior finishing instead of asking the homeowner to schedule a separate roof intervention later. The 2015 article describes selling daylighting with a new roof as natural in the same way as discussing roofing-material upgrades, attic insulation and ventilation.
That rationale does not establish that every installation is simpler or cheaper during a reroof. Structural framing, shaft construction, interior finishes, electrical work, access, weather protection and permit requirements still have to be evaluated for the specific house. A daylighting opening can also affect the finished appearance of a ceiling and the way a room feels. The proposal should therefore show what work is included and what work is outside the roofing contract.
How to spot a daylighting opportunity during a roofing job
1. Start with the agreed roof inspection
Do not turn the first inspection into a house-wide sales tour. Document the roof condition, leak evidence, ventilation and other items within the agreed scope. If an attic inspection is part of the job, use it to understand the roof structure and to notice where natural light is absent. Ask permission before inspecting interior rooms or taking photographs.
2. Map dark spaces from the attic and inside the home
Damato specifically points to bathrooms, hallways and closets as examples of areas that may stay dark. Add any room the homeowner identifies as gloomy or dependent on electric lighting during the day. Record the location of rafters, trusses, ducts, plumbing, wiring, insulation depth and any existing roof or ceiling openings. This is an opportunity screen, not an approval to cut the roof.
3. Ask an open question before naming a product
A useful transition is: “Are there any rooms you wish had more natural light?” If the homeowner mentions a dark hallway or bathroom, follow with questions such as:

- When is the room hardest to use because of the lack of daylight?
- Is the priority more natural light, ventilation, privacy, or reducing daytime electric-light use?
- Would you consider interior ceiling work as part of the project?
- Are there roof areas or interior finishes you do not want changed?
- Is this a possibility to price now, or would you prefer a separate future discussion?
These questions test whether there is a real homeowner objective. They also prevent a contractor from assuming that a visually obvious roof location is suitable for the room below.
4. Offer a clearly optional next step
If the customer is interested, propose a feasibility review or a separate line item rather than silently adding daylighting to the roof replacement. Explain that the review must confirm structural, weatherproofing, interior and regulatory requirements. If the customer is not interested, close the subject and continue the roof discussion.
Daylighting products mentioned in the 2015 article
The article names broad product categories and some features that were available at the time. It does not identify current models, manufacturers, prices, warranties, energy performance, compatibility or installation details. The table is therefore a conversation map, not a specification sheet.
| Pathway | What the article describes | What must be verified today |
|---|---|---|
| Roof windows | A roof-mounted window option for bringing daylight into an interior space. | Current product availability, required roof pitch, flashing system, dimensions, operation, glazing, structural fit, egress or safety implications where applicable, and local code requirements. |
| Skylights | A central residential daylighting option that a roofing contractor might discuss during reroofing or repair. | Current model specifications, curb or deck mounting, flashing details, shaft design, glazing, thermal and moisture performance, warranty terms, installation responsibility and approvals. |
| Skylight tunnels with LED packages | Some daylighting products were described as combining a tunnel with LED lighting for daytime and nighttime use. | Whether a current combination product exists for the project, how the light source is controlled, electrical requirements, ceiling and roof compatibility, serviceability and code compliance. |
| Powered operators, shades or venting with rain sensors | The 2015 article mentions remote-controlled solar-powered operators for shades or venting skylights and automatic rain sensors. | Current control protocol, power and battery behavior, sensor reliability, integration limits, weather sealing, maintenance, warranty and whether the feature is approved for the selected unit. |
Because the source is from 2015, do not describe any of these features as currently available in a particular market without checking present manufacturer documentation. A residential skylight or roof window can be a valid product-search category, but a specific listing belongs in a proposal only after compatibility and installation information have been confirmed.
Build the proposal around the homeowner’s decision
Separate the roof scope from the daylighting scope
Show the base roof work first. Then identify daylighting as an option with its own assumptions, exclusions and price. The document should state whether the option includes opening and closing the roof, framing changes, flashing, insulation, interior shaft construction, drywall or trim, painting, electrical work, controls, cleanup and inspections. If another trade must perform part of the work, name that responsibility rather than implying that roofing labor covers it.
Explain the visual result without promising an exact effect
A new opening can change the look and feel of a room. Show a marked-up plan or a simple location sketch when possible, but avoid promising a particular brightness level without a project-specific design. Orientation, roof geometry, shaft length, surrounding buildings, trees, glazing and weather all affect the result. The historical article does not provide photometric tests or energy-savings figures.

Give the homeowner a deliberate yes-or-no choice
Use an option table in the estimate: keep the roof scope unchanged; investigate daylighting before contract; or defer the idea. A homeowner who declines should receive the same careful roof work. A homeowner who accepts should receive a written design and installation review before any opening is made.
What the article does—and does not—say about revenue
Damato suggests that selling daylighting systems to “ten or twenty percent” of customers could affect annual billings. That is a hypothetical prompt in an editorial argument, not a reported conversion rate, industry statistic or contractor study. It cannot be used as a forecast, quota or return-on-investment calculation.
To evaluate the business case in your own company, track actual numbers over time: how many qualified homeowners were asked, how many requested a feasibility review, how many proposals were issued, how many were accepted, the gross margin after all trades, callbacks, warranty work and the time spent on design and coordination. Keep roof-only jobs in the same record so the daylighting option is not credited for revenue that would have occurred anyway. Those are management measurements you can collect; they are not results established by the 2015 article.
Protect the roof relationship while discussing an add-on
The strongest caution in the source is reputational. Damato writes: “The biggest risk you take is being remembered as the guy who changed the look and feel of the inside of the house when you really wanted to be remembered for the great job you did on the roof.” The practical implication is to make roof performance the non-negotiable priority and to control the interior-change risk.
- Never let a daylighting conversation distract from leak prevention, flashing quality, ventilation details or the agreed roof specification.
- Do not cut an opening until the design, customer approval and responsible trades are documented.
- Use a qualified structural or design professional when the framing situation requires one.
- Protect finished interiors and state who repairs damage if concealed conditions are discovered.
- Photograph concealed conditions and the completed weatherproofing in the project record.
- Provide separate care, maintenance and warranty information for the roof and the daylighting assembly.
Current due diligence before you recommend a system
The source does not establish today’s code, permit, incentive, pricing or product rules. Before presenting a specific solution, verify the requirements that apply to the project’s location and edition of the governing codes. Confirm roof-pitch limits, structural loading, water-management details, glazing and safety requirements, ventilation or egress implications where relevant, electrical rules for powered features, and inspection responsibilities. Obtain current installation instructions from the selected manufacturer and follow the listed flashing system rather than adapting a generic detail.
Also check the commercial facts that frequently change: delivered product price, labor hours, lead time, availability of matching shades or controls, warranty exclusions, service access and whether a subcontractor is licensed or insured for the work assigned. The 2015 editorial supplies none of those current values, so an honest proposal should say when a figure is an allowance or subject to field verification.

A field checklist for roofing contractors
- Confirm that the homeowner wants to discuss improvements beyond the roof.
- Inspect the attic only within the agreed access and safety procedures.
- Note dark rooms and the homeowner’s stated reason for wanting more light.
- Map framing, utilities, insulation and potential interior shaft locations.
- Explain that roof windows, skylights and tunnel-based systems are different design paths.
- Record the exact product, mounting method and features only after current documentation is available.
- Separate roof work, daylighting work and other-trade work in the estimate.
- State assumptions, exclusions, permits, inspections, protection and cleanup responsibilities.
- Obtain written approval before ordering or cutting.
- Close out with photographs, operating instructions, maintenance information and warranty contacts.
Common mistakes and the fix for each
Pitching every customer
Problem: The conversation feels like a scripted add-on and ignores the homeowner’s priorities.
Fix: Use the dark-space observation and an open question as a qualification step. Stop when there is no stated need.
Treating a historical feature list as a current catalog
Problem: A contractor promises solar operation, rain sensing, tunnel lighting or remote controls that may not fit the selected product or market.
Fix: Present those as examples described in a 2015 article and verify each current feature in manufacturer documentation before quoting it.
Quoting a roof-only price for a whole-room alteration
Problem: Interior framing, drywall, paint, electrical work or repairs to concealed conditions appear after the contract is signed.

How to make the approach useful without overselling
A practical daylighting program can be small. Train estimators and foremen to recognize dark spaces, ask one respectful question and record an interested homeowner. Create a standard feasibility checklist and an option-page template, but keep the final recommendation project-specific. Review completed jobs for water performance, finish quality, customer satisfaction, labor variance and service calls. If the numbers do not support the option, revise the process rather than assuming more volume will solve it.
The central lesson of the 2015 editorial remains a way of framing the conversation: a roofing contractor may be able to help a homeowner think about the roof, attic and interior environment together. The evidence does not prove a conversion rate or a financial return, and it does not replace current technical guidance. Used as a permission-based discovery process—with present-day verification before installation—daylighting can be considered responsibly alongside a reroof instead of being treated as an automatic add-on.
