At the Pablo Center at the Confluence in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, panel depth does more than add texture. The 1.5-inch ribs on the insulated metal façade catch daylight on their ridges and leave darker bands in their recesses, so the tall stage tower reads as a solid volume instead of a flat skin. That visual effect was a deliberate design decision, while the panels’ insulation and quick installation made them practical for enclosing the theater.
The result shows why a façade profile must be judged from the street, not only from a detail drawing: projection, spacing, color, orientation and the way panels meet adjacent materials determine whether the building has legible mass or merely a patterned surface.

The project: a theater at two rivers
The Pablo Center at the Confluence occupies the meeting point of the Eau Claire and Chippewa rivers in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Its main theater is wrapped in a façade that combines insulated metal panels, copper and stone. The stage tower rises above the lower portions of the building, making its appearance from surrounding streets especially dependent on how the cladding handles changing light.
Building Enclosure’s March 1, 2019 project profile identifies almost 29,900 square feet of Metl-Span 7.2 Insul-Rib insulated metal panels. The profile describes the panels as part of the enclosure for the main theater and emphasizes that the tower needed to be enclosed quickly. Those project facts describe what was installed for this building; they are not a general performance claim for every panel installation.

Why depth makes a flat façade read as a volume
Ridges create highlights
A ribbed panel repeats a small geometric section across its width. When sunlight or overcast sky illuminates the wall, the outward-facing rib edges are oriented differently from the recessed flats. The edges therefore become brighter or visually sharper than the valleys beside them. A viewer does not see one uninterrupted plane; the eye groups the alternating highlights into a continuous form.
Recesses create shadow bands
Every rib also creates a narrow zone that receives less direct light. As the sun moves, those zones lengthen, shorten or darken at different rates from the surrounding metal. The contrast gives the wall a readable rhythm even when its overall color is restrained. At a distance, the repeated dark bands help define the tower’s planes and corners; close up, they reveal the panel’s construction scale.
Street distance changes the effect
The useful question is not simply how deep a rib is on paper. It is whether that depth remains visible at the distances and angles from which people approach the building. A profile that looks pronounced in a mock-up may merge into a flat tone when viewed from across a street. Conversely, a profile that appears busy at arm’s length can settle into a calm mass when the ribs are read as one pattern from farther away.
Malcom Holzman, partner-in-charge at Holzman Moss Bottino Architecture, described the intent directly: “We want the building read as a volume and not as a panel. The shape and shadow deceive the eye so it reads as volume.” The word “deceive” refers to perception, not a hidden structural trick: the wall remains an assembly of panels, but its relief supplies visual cues associated with depth.

What was installed at the Pablo Center
The project profile reports the following panel and adjacent-material specifications. Because these figures come from a 2019 account of one project, they should be used as project documentation rather than as current market benchmarks.
| Element | Reported project detail |
|---|---|
| Insulated metal panel area | Almost 29,900 square feet |
| Panel system identified in the profile | Metl-Span 7.2 Insul-Rib |
| Core | 3-inch urethane |
| Exterior metal | 22-gauge Weathered Zinc |
| Interior metal | 26-gauge Igloo White |
| Rib geometry | 1.5-inch-high ribs on 7.2-inch centers |
| Copper façade | 18,000 square feet of shop-fabricated copper from KME |
| Stone façade | 3.5-inch sawn Aqua Grantique stone from Krukowski Stone Company |
The relationship between rib height and spacing is important to the visual reading. A 1.5-inch projection repeated every 7.2 inches produces enough relief for directional light to register, while the relatively regular spacing keeps the wall from becoming a collection of unrelated bumps. Weathered Zinc gives the exterior a muted metallic field in which the light-dark pattern, rather than a bright color, carries much of the visual work.
Insulation and speed were part of the design decision
Appearance was not the only reason to use insulated metal panels. Gilbert Oh, AIA, LEED AP, of Holzman Moss Bottino Architecture, called the choice pragmatic because of the insulation. He also explained why relief mattered on a high wall: “The depth of the panels helps the appearance because they are high up and we didn’t want that look to get lost from the street.”

An insulated panel combines exterior and interior metal skins with a factory-made insulating core. At the Pablo Center, the reported core was 3-inch urethane. That integrated construction allowed the enclosure team to address the wall’s exterior finish and a major portion of its thermal layer in one panelized operation. The project profile links this practical benefit to the need to close in the tall stage tower quickly; it does not provide an independent energy model or a measured schedule comparison.

Rapid enclosure can also protect interior work from weather sooner, but the benefit depends on engineering, sequencing, lifting access and available crews. The Pablo Center’s experience shows that a panel system can support an accelerated enclosure objective without making installation simple by default.
How copper and stone reinforce the panel strategy
The ribbed metal is one part of a deliberately mixed façade. The project included 18,000 square feet of shop-fabricated copper supplied by KME. Copper introduces a different kind of change over time: its surface character and reflectance differ from the Weathered Zinc panels, so the eye can distinguish material zones even when both are installed on the same building.
The façade also used 3.5-inch sawn Aqua Grantique stone from Krukowski Stone Company. The profile reports that the stone was mined less than 50 miles from the site. Its sawn thickness and mineral surface provide a more massive, tactile counterpoint to the thin-looking metal skin. The contrast helps the ribbed panels read as an intentional volume rather than as an isolated industrial texture.

Installation in winter and at the upper mezzanine
Bruce Reed, senior project manager at Division V Sheet Metal, identified winter work and material delivery coordination as the principal installation challenges. The panels were packaged by elevation, which allowed crews to receive bundles in an order tied to the portion of the building being enclosed. That approach reduces unnecessary sorting at the site, but it requires accurate packaging, staging and communication among the fabricator, carrier and installers.
At the upper mezzanine and roof area, a tower crane raised panels and a swing crane lowered them into position. Reed’s team developed clamps to hold the vertical panels. These details are reported project methods, not a recommendation to improvise lifting hardware on another job. Any lifting device, attachment point and panel orientation must be designed and approved for the specific panel, crane and site conditions.
Winter adds practical constraints beyond temperature. Snow, ice, wind and shorter work windows can affect staging areas, crane operations and the ability to keep panel joints clean and aligned. A delivery plan organized by elevation can be especially valuable when the enclosure sequence must keep pace with interior construction, but it must be coordinated with crane availability and the installation drawings.
What the current CF 7.2 product information says
The manufacturer’s current CF 7.2 Insul-Rib page, accessed October 13, 2026, describes an insulated ribbed metal wall panel with a nominal 36-inch coverage width. It lists 3- or 4-inch thickness options, a 1.5-inch-high rib profile and installation in either vertical or horizontal orientation. The page also provides technical resources such as data sheets, guide specifications, load-span tables and detail drawings, and notes that specifications may change without notice.

Those are current product-family statements. They should not be substituted for the Pablo Center’s reported 2019 configuration: the project profile specifies a 3-inch urethane core, 22-gauge Weathered Zinc exterior, 26-gauge Igloo White interior and ribs on 7.2-inch centers. A designer working today should obtain the current manufacturer’s documents, then verify structural spans, fastening, fire and thermal requirements, finish availability and details for the actual building.
A practical way to evaluate panel depth on a new façade
The Pablo Center offers a useful design framework without proving that one profile is best for every building. Evaluate the following questions before selecting a ribbed insulated panel:
- Start with the viewing distance. Identify the sidewalks, streets, bridges and neighboring buildings from which the wall will be seen. Check whether the proposed projection and spacing produce a coherent light-dark pattern at those distances.
- Study sun and sky conditions. Review direct sun from the major orientations as well as diffuse light on overcast days. A rib that depends on a narrow sun angle may disappear under other conditions.
- Set the thermal requirement. Choose the panel thickness and core only after the enclosure design establishes insulation, condensation control, fire performance and structural needs. The Pablo Center used a reported 3-inch urethane core, but that project value is not a universal prescription.
- Choose finish and color with the relief. Darker recesses and brighter ridges are affected by color, gloss and weathering. A restrained finish can let geometry carry the expression; a highly reflective finish can make highlights more dominant.
- Decide orientation early. Current CF 7.2 information allows vertical or horizontal installation, but orientation changes joint lines, water management, visual direction and lifting sequence. It also changes how the ribs align with openings and adjacent copper or stone.
- Coordinate the logistics before fabrication. Establish bundle sizes, delivery order, crane reach, staging and temporary protection. At the Pablo Center, packaging by elevation and two crane types were part of the solution.
- Detail transitions as one enclosure. Resolve panel ends, flashings, copper edges, stone supports, corners and penetrations together. The visual success of depth is lost if transitions interrupt the intended mass or produce uncontrolled shadow lines.
What this case study does—and does not—establish
The Pablo Center demonstrates a clear design principle: controlled relief can make a large metal-clad wall legible as a three-dimensional building volume. It also demonstrates why an insulated panel may be selected for both enclosure speed and thermal construction, especially where a tall tower must be closed in quickly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIt does not establish a market-wide ranking of ribbed panel systems, an independently measured energy result, a universal installation schedule or a guaranteed visual outcome on another site. The quantities, gauges, finish names, rib dimensions and crane methods are the project’s reported details. Current product information belongs to the manufacturer’s present offering and may change. A new project still needs its own structural, thermal, fire, moisture, color and logistics review.
For the Pablo Center, the decisive move was to treat panel depth as architecture rather than decoration. The ribs supplied the alternating light and shadow that helped the tower hold its shape from the street, while the insulated panel assembly and coordinated installation addressed the practical demands of enclosing a complex performing-arts building.
