Researchers have made succulent leaves glow by injecting them with light-storing phosphor particles. After a few minutes under sunlight or indoor LED light, the treated leaves produced an afterglow for up to two hours in the reported experiment. This is an experimental material-engineering technique—not a plant that makes light biologically, and not a practical home project.
How does a glowing succulent work?
The 2025 study, “Sunlight-powered multicolor and uniform luminescence in material-engineered living plants,” used inorganic phosphor particles introduced into succulent leaves. External light charges the particles; they then release that stored energy gradually as an afterglow. The plant is not generating light through its own metabolism.
According to Phys.org’s report on the study, the particles were about 7 micrometers across—roughly the width of a red blood cell. They moved through the leaf tissue and produced an even glow. The researchers reported stronger results in succulents than in the other plants they tested, including golden pothos and bok choy, which the report attributes to channels and spaces inside succulent leaves.
What did the experiment achieve?
- Afterglow: The researchers reported that a few minutes of exposure to sunlight or indoor LED light could produce a glow lasting up to two hours. Green particles lasted longest; the report does not establish that every color lasted as long or was equally bright.
- Colors: Treated leaves glowed in multiple colors, including green, red, and blue.
- Plant wall: A wall made with 56 succulents reportedly produced enough light to illuminate nearby objects and allow reading. The report provides no standardized brightness measurement for comparison with a lamp.
- Preparation estimate: First author Shuting Liu reported that each plant took about 10 minutes to prepare and cost a little over 10 yuan (about US $1.40), excluding labor. That is an experimental preparation estimate, not a retail price or consumer-kit cost.
Is this the same as a bioluminescent plant?
No. The phosphor-treated succulent stores energy from external light and releases it afterward. A bioluminescent plant produces light through a biological process. Light Bio describes its Firefly Petunia as bioluminescent; it is a petunia, not a succulent, and it is a separate technology.

There is also a simpler look-alike: a decorative succulent arrangement lit by an LED string. In that case, the lights illuminate the display from outside; the leaves do not glow from within.

Can you make a phosphor-glowing succulent at home?
The published coverage does not establish a validated home-injection method or long-term effects on plant health. The researchers were still studying the materials’ long-term safety. The experimental preparation time and cost do not establish that the process is safe or suitable for home use, so do not treat it as a DIY injection project.

How to make a succulent display that glows tonight
For a safe, accessible decorative version, arrange battery-operated LED fairy lights around a potted succulent. The lights create the glow; they do not transform the plant. A lantern, bowl, or shallow planter can frame the display.
- Choose a small succulent and a lantern, bowl, or planter that leaves room for the light string.
- Arrange battery-operated LED fairy lights around the pot or through the display, keeping the light set’s battery pack accessible.
- If planting directly in a container without drainage holes, use particular care not to overwater. The Celebrated Nest tutorial lists succulent potting soil and lights with timers as project options; check that any light set used outdoors is rated for that location.
