Redford Township District Library in Michigan converted 18,000 square feet of unused second-floor storage into a children’s library and expanded teen space. Rather than treating the area as a simple fit-out, the design team organized it as a river journey through forest, meadow, wetlands and urban settings, using interactive elements and custom interiors to make the route feel immersive.
The project shows how an existing library can gain specialized space without adding a new building. It also illustrates the discipline required to combine storytelling, supervision, high-traffic durability and flexible study areas. The dimensions, design team and material descriptions below come from Building Enclosure’s August 17, 2026 project feature; that account is not an independent post-occupancy evaluation.

The project in brief
When Redford Township District Library opened in 2004, the facility measured 65,000 square feet, according to the Building Enclosure feature. About two decades later, an unused second-floor storage area became the setting for a new children’s library and more room for teenagers. The reported conversion covers 18,000 square feet, a substantial intervention inside the existing envelope rather than an addition to the site.

Why reuse storage for children and teens?
Storage often occupies valuable floor area while contributing little to a library’s public program. Reclaiming it can preserve the building’s location, structure and existing utilities while directing capital toward spaces patrons use every day. In Redford Township, the move also allowed two audiences with different needs to gain room: children received a dedicated library environment, and teenagers received an expansion rather than being asked to share a limited corner of the original floor plan.
An internal conversion still requires the rigor of a new project. The design team must verify floor loading, egress, fire protection, accessibility, heating and cooling capacity, daylight, acoustics, plumbing and the path for moving furniture and construction materials. Existing columns, low clearances or mechanical equipment can determine the final layout. None of those technical surveys is described in the feature, so they should be treated as essential planning questions for other libraries, not as documented facts about Redford Township.
The strategic advantage is flexibility. A library can phase work, keep much of the original building operating and test a program against actual community demand before committing to an addition. The trade-off is that an old storage area may need extensive upgrades before it can support occupied rooms, public circulation and technology.
A river journey gives the floor plan a story
The concept described by Building Enclosure is a journey along a river. Visitors move through a sequence of environments—forest, meadow, wetlands and urban settings—rather than entering a neutral room with shelves arranged in rows. That sequence gives the children’s area a recognizable identity and offers designers a way to distinguish zones without relying only on signs.
Forest
A forest setting can establish the beginning of the journey with layered forms, sheltered reading pockets and a sense of discovery. In a library, those qualities can support quieter browsing and imaginative play while maintaining clear sightlines for caregivers and staff. The feature does not provide a material schedule or color palette for this zone; it identifies the environmental sequence as the organizing idea.
Meadow
A meadow suggests openness and gathering. It can accommodate low shelving, group story time, movable seating or floor activities, with circulation routes that remain visible. Because children’s programming changes throughout the day, open areas need furniture that can be moved without blocking exits or creating trip hazards.

Wetlands
Wetlands introduce a different visual and tactile cue and can help mark a transition between active and contemplative uses. Any water imagery or nature installation must be coordinated with cleaning, moisture control and maintenance procedures. The project feature names the wetlands as part of the thematic journey but does not claim that the library installed real water features.
Urban settings
The urban portion can connect the river story to the community beyond the library. It may be a useful place for teen-oriented study, collaborative work or performance, where the visual language shifts from natural forms to streetscape-inspired elements. The Redford Township account describes expanded teen space but does not publish a room-by-room program or capacity.
Interactive elements turn scenery into programming
The design includes more than printed graphics. Building Enclosure describes spinning flowers, a live green wall and a performance stage as interactive features. Each supports a different kind of engagement:
- Spinning flowers: movable elements invite children to touch and manipulate the environment. Their hardware, pinch-point protection and inspection schedule would need to be specified for a public setting.
- Live green wall: a planted feature adds a changing, living component to the river narrative. It also creates obligations for irrigation, lighting, plant care, drainage and staff responsibility. The feature does not report the wall’s plant species, maintenance cost or measured indoor-air effect.
- Performance stage: a stage can support story time, music, demonstrations and youth presentations. Its usefulness depends on power, lighting, acoustics, storage and a layout that lets audiences gather without cutting across the main circulation path.
These elements are most effective when they are tied to library services. A spinning feature can be adjacent to early-literacy displays; a stage can support scheduled programs; and a green wall can become part of a science or stewardship activity. Without that operational connection, an installation risks becoming scenery that is expensive to maintain.
The covered bridge is both theme and work hub
A covered wooden bridge serves as a study and collaboration hub in the transformed space. It is a particularly efficient move because it performs several jobs at once: the bridge reinforces the river narrative, creates a memorable destination and provides a place for teens or small groups to work.
For a bridge-like structure in any public interior, designers must resolve guardrails, edge protection, accessible routes, structural support, lighting and the ability to supervise users. Seating and tables should not narrow the accessible path, and electrical and data outlets should be placed where they can be reached without trailing cords across circulation. The Redford Township feature identifies the bridge’s use but does not publish its dimensions or engineering details.

Custom interiors make the environments coherent
The account says custom furniture, ceiling treatments and lighting were designed as part of the environment. Custom work can carry the river story through the entire room instead of limiting it to wall art. It can also solve awkward conditions left by the existing building, such as columns, irregular bays or a low ceiling.
Custom furniture should be evaluated against library operations as well as appearance. Shelving needs appropriate reach ranges for children, stable anchoring and edges that withstand repeated contact. Tables and seating should support individual reading, caregiver-child interaction and group work. Casters can improve flexibility, but only when brakes, weight limits and storage plans are clear.

Ceiling treatments can help identify zones and improve acoustics, especially in a large open conversion. They must remain compatible with sprinklers, smoke detection, lighting access and future maintenance. Lighting should provide comfortable reading levels, avoid glare on screens and allow staff to see across active areas. The feature credits these elements to the project design but does not provide photometric measurements or acoustic test results.
Material strategy: durable protection with custom graphics
MCD Architects specified Acrovyn by Design custom graphics from Construction Specialties, along with Acrovyn wall coverings and panels, according to the Building Enclosure feature. The article presents the coverings and panels as protection for high-traffic, high-impact interiors while also using them to support the visual story.
| Reported material use | Function described in the feature | How to interpret the claim |
|---|---|---|
| Acrovyn by Design custom graphics | Custom imagery integrated with the themed interior | Attributed to the Building Enclosure project account and the specified product line |
| Acrovyn wall coverings and panels | Protection in high-traffic, high-impact areas | Described by the feature; project-specific performance data is not supplied |
| Acrovyn material content | Reported as PVC-free and containing up to 50% post-consumer recycled content | These are claims reported by the article and/or Construction Specialties; verify current manufacturer documentation for the exact product and specification |
Wall protection is especially relevant in children’s spaces, where carts, toys, backpacks and furniture can strike corners and lower wall surfaces. Panels can reduce damage to the underlying gypsum board and make cleaning routines more predictable. Graphics can then be printed or fabricated to carry the design narrative across those protected surfaces.
“PVC-free” and “up to 50% post-consumer recycled content” should not be generalized to every product in a family. A project team should request the current technical data sheet, recycled-content definition, fire and smoke ratings, cleaning guidance, warranty terms and environmental documentation for the exact color, finish and thickness being considered. The feature is a supplier-associated trade-publication account, not an independent materials test.

How the design team could translate the concept into a buildable project
Libraries considering a similar conversion can use the Redford Township approach as a planning sequence. The steps below are practical guidance, not a claim that the feature documents each step.
- Audit the dormant area. Measure usable floor area and ceiling height, map columns and equipment, and confirm structural capacity, egress, accessibility, fire protection and environmental conditions before developing a theme.
- Define audiences and activities. List children’s browsing, story time, caregiver seating, teen study, collaboration, performances, staff supervision and storage. Give each activity a place and a backup location for peak periods.
- Choose one spatial narrative. A river journey, neighborhood map or another locally meaningful idea can guide colors, forms, graphics and transitions. Limit the palette so that the story remains legible rather than visually noisy.
- Lay out circulation first. Establish an accessible route, emergency paths, staff sightlines and delivery access. Then place shelves, furniture and interactive features around those fixed requirements.
- Prototype touchpoints. Test a sample of wall protection, furniture edges, graphics, lighting and interactive hardware with staff and families. Check cleanability, glare, reach ranges, noise and the possibility of repair.
- Coordinate specialist systems. Integrate structural, electrical, lighting, acoustics, HVAC, irrigation for living installations and life-safety systems before fabrication. Custom ceilings and bridge-like elements should never be treated as decorative add-ons after engineering is complete.
- Write the operations plan. Assign responsibility for green-wall care, interactive inspections, stage scheduling, furniture moves, cleaning products and damage reporting. A durable finish still needs a documented maintenance routine.
- Open in phases and observe use. Track which areas attract children, where teens choose to work, whether caregivers can see play zones and how staff handle programs. Use those observations to adjust furniture and signage rather than assuming the original plan is permanent.
What this project demonstrates—and what remains unreported
The strongest documented lesson is spatial reuse with a clear identity: an 18,000-square-foot storage area became a destination organized around a river journey, with interactive features, a study bridge and custom interiors supporting children and teens. The named design and construction participants are MCD Architects and McCarthy & Smith, Inc.; Merritt McPherson Cieslak is identified as the original architect of the 2004 library.
The feature does not establish how the conversion affected attendance, circulation, program participation, energy use, acoustics, maintenance costs or user satisfaction. It also does not compare Acrovyn with competing wall-protection systems or provide independent verification of recycled content and PVC status. Those questions require project records, manufacturer documentation or a post-occupancy study.
That boundary matters when another library uses the story for budgeting or specifications. The design ideas are transferable, but the final solution must respond to local code, structure, staffing, climate, cleaning practices and procurement rules. A themed environment can be memorable without copying the exact imagery or products used in Redford Township.

Libraries are often asked to add children’s programming, teen services and collaborative learning without moving to a larger site. Redford Township’s reported conversion offers one response: reclaim underused interior volume, give the new area a strong organizing story and make every major feature serve both experience and function. The river sequence helps visitors navigate; the bridge provides a recognizable work hub; interactive elements invite participation; and protective finishes are intended to withstand demanding public use.
Because the account is a project feature rather than a measured evaluation, its value is primarily design precedent. It shows what is possible when architecture, interiors, furniture, lighting and material specification are planned as one environment. Libraries pursuing the same goal should pair that creative ambition with verified technical documents, clear maintenance ownership and post-opening observation.
