How Often to Water Your Blueberries

Keep blueberry roots evenly moist, counting rainfall toward their weekly water. New bushes may need several waterings a week; established plants depend on soil, weather and local guidance.

Water blueberries often enough to keep the shallow root zone evenly moist, but not waterlogged. Newly planted bushes may need water several times a week while roots establish; established bushes should be watered according to rainfall, soil moisture, soil type and weather—not a fixed number of sessions.

How often should you water blueberry bushes?

Check the soil below the surface and water when the rooting area is beginning to dry. Oregon State University Extension advises checking soil to about one foot and wetting it 0.5–1 foot deep with each irrigation. New plants may need watering several times weekly or as needed; established plants should not be allowed to dry completely between waterings. Oregon State’s home-garden guide recommends thorough watering without leaving standing water.

Rain counts toward a bush’s water supply. Weekly amounts published by extension services differ by region and growing conditions, so use them as starting points rather than a universal prescription:

Guidance Context
1.5–3 inches per week Oregon State Extension guidance for established plants; the amount varies with age, vigor, growth stage, soil and weather. Publication date is not stated on the page.
At least 1 inch per week when rainfall is low University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension’s 2025 raised-bed and container guide; it equates this to 65 gallons per 100 square feet.
1–2 inches per week University of Maine Cooperative Extension guidance for highbush blueberries. Publication date is not stated on the page.

These figures describe water received over a week, including rainfall where applicable; they do not tell you how many times to run a hose or irrigation system. That depends on how quickly your soil dries and how much water your setup delivers.

What changes how often blueberries need water?

Plant age and root development

Newly planted bushes have smaller, less-established root systems and may need several waterings per week. As plants establish, use soil moisture and weather to set the cadence rather than keeping to the new-plant schedule. Oregon State Extension recommends watering new plants several times a week or as needed.

Soil, beds and drainage

Sandy soil drains and dries faster than heavier soil, so it generally calls for more frequent watering. Raised beds and containers can also dry quickly. Water the root area thoroughly, but avoid saturated soil and standing water: blueberry roots are shallow, and excess water can move below the root zone along with nutrients.

In Florida pine-bark growing systems, the shallow rooting medium stores little water. The University of Florida recommends frequent, relatively small applications there to reduce water and nutrient movement below the roots. This is specific to that production context, not a general prescription for every garden.

Weather, season and fruit growth

Hot, dry weather increases the need to check soil and water more often; rainy or cool conditions may reduce it. Water demand can also rise with canopy growth and fruit development. In Florida production guidance for southern highbush blueberries, the University of Florida identifies early fruit set through harvest as a critical irrigation period and gives 1–1.5 inches per week during fruit development or high canopy growth. That rate is for Florida production conditions, not a universal home-garden target.

Florida guidance is different by type and season

The University of Florida’s home-garden guide estimates mature blueberry bushes need about 40 inches of water annually, most of it from rain. For its Florida context, it describes about 0.6 inches per week in March and 1.0–1.2 inches per week in late spring and summer, counting rainfall plus irrigation. Frequency depends on weather, soil and blueberry type: established rabbiteye bushes may need irrigation only during prolonged dry periods, while southern highbush bushes in very sandy soil may need three or more irrigations weekly during dry periods. Water use falls during dormancy in deciduous production systems.

These figures are Florida-specific examples, not a schedule to apply in other climates. See the University of Florida IFAS Blueberry Gardener’s Guide for home-garden context and its southern highbush irrigation guidance for Florida production conditions.

How to check whether the root zone needs water

  1. Check below the surface rather than judging by the top layer alone. Dig carefully near the bush and feel the soil down to about one foot, as advised by Oregon State Extension.
  2. If the rooting area is drying, water slowly enough to wet the soil around the roots. Oregon State recommends moistening 0.5–1 foot of soil with each irrigation.
  3. After watering, check the soil again and adjust the next interval to your soil, recent rainfall and weather. Do not leave the area standing in water.

A moisture meter is optional; careful observation and a soil check can guide home watering. The University of Florida discusses volumetric moisture sensors for commercial scheduling and cautions that tension sensors may not work well in Florida pine-bark conditions. That specialized guidance should not be assumed to apply to consumer meters or other soils.

Which watering method works for a small bed or row?

Drip irrigation delivers water near the root zone and keeps foliage drier than overhead sprinklers. Oregon State Extension describes drip as an efficient option that can reduce weed problems and disease; monitored soaker hoses also work. Nebraska Extension lists hand watering, overhead irrigation, drip, micro-irrigation, emitters, bubblers, tubing and micro-sprays for raised beds. Drip or bubbler systems can direct water to the plants, limiting wet foliage and weeds.

For a small garden, choose a method you can observe and adjust. A hose or watering can may suit one or a few bushes; drip or a soaker hose may make regular watering easier across a bed or row. Overhead watering wets leaves, whereas root-zone methods help keep foliage dry. Watering duration varies with the installed system and conditions.

Oregon State’s production setup uses two drip lines, one on each side of a plant or row, with half-gallon emitters spaced 18 inches apart. This is an example from its production guidance, not a required home-garden layout. Nebraska Extension’s raised-bed and container guide recommends mulch to maintain moisture and gives 2–4 inches for bark-based mulches or 6 inches for straw in that context. Follow guidance suited to your planting system rather than treating those mulch depths as universal.
