Water mums when the soil needs it, not simply because a certain number of days has passed. For an indoor potted mum, check often and water when the soil surface feels dry, letting excess drain from the pot. For garden mums, keep the soil evenly moist but well drained; during dry weather, a thorough watering about every 7 to 14 days is a useful starting point, adjusted for rain, heat and soil.
How often to water mums depends on where they grow
Florist mums in pots and garden mums planted in the ground have different watering needs. A small pot can dry quickly, while an established garden plant can draw moisture from a larger volume of soil. In either setting, use soil moisture as your main cue and make sure extra water can drain away.

Water an indoor potted mum
- Touch the soil surface regularly. When it feels dry, water the plant.
- Pour water over the soil until it begins to flow from the drainage holes.
- If the nursery pot sits inside a decorative cover, take it out to water. Let it drain fully before putting it back, and do not leave it standing in collected runoff.
Iowa State University Extension and Outreach gives this moisture-based guidance for gift mums rather than a schedule by day: check the soil frequently and water when its surface is dry to the touch. Its chrysanthemum growing guide also emphasizes well-drained soil.
Water garden mums during dry weather
Garden mums need steady moisture while actively growing, but soggy soil is not the goal. During a prolonged dry spell, use roughly 7 to 14 days as a prompt to check the ground, not as an automatic watering timer. If rain has kept the soil moist, skip supplemental watering; in hot weather or fast-draining soil, check sooner.

Regional extension recommendations illustrate why conditions matter. Iowa State advises watering garden mums every 7 to 10 days when soil is dry, Virginia Cooperative Extension recommends soaking the ground every week or two, and Missouri Extension gives about 1.5 inches of water per week during the growing season as a regional guideline. The Missouri figure is not a universal prescription and does not apply to indoor pots.
Water deeply and keep leaves dry when practical
When watering outdoor chrysanthemums, aim water at the soil and soak it about 5 to 6 inches deep, as Purdue Extension recommends. Avoid frequent, light sprinklings: they can encourage shallow roots and create conditions more favorable to some diseases, including mildew and leaf spot. Keeping foliage dry, especially overnight, can also help reduce leaf disease problems, according to Virginia Cooperative Extension.

What changes how often mums need water?
- Rainfall: Rain can reduce or eliminate the need for supplemental watering outdoors.
