Replace each water-purifier cartridge or membrane according to the exact model’s manual, using the first limit reached when both a gallon rating and a calendar interval are given. There is no dependable universal “every six months” rule: sediment, carbon, post-filter and reverse-osmosis (RO) membrane stages have different capacities, and source-water quality can shorten their service life.
Why a single replacement rule does not work
A purifier is usually a sequence of treatment stages, not one interchangeable filter. A sediment cartridge traps particles; carbon media adsorb chlorine, odors and other compounds; a post-filter polishes water; and an RO membrane separates dissolved material under pressure. Each medium has a different capacity and can fail in a different way.

Manufacturers commonly express service life as either a treated-water volume (gallons or litres), an elapsed time, or a performance trigger. The National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) notes that the recommended change cycle varies from product to product. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) both direct owners to follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Mechanical clogging can make flow slow, but adsorption media may be exhausted while water still flows normally. A cartridge that looks clean or produces acceptable-tasting water is not necessarily within its rated service life. Treat the manual’s limit as a safety and performance requirement, not a suggestion that can automatically be extended because your household uses little water.

Published schedules are examples, not a universal timetable
The following figures come from named product guidance. They illustrate why intervals differ and must not be transferred to another brand or model.
| System guidance | Component | Published interval or trigger | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| GE Appliances reverse-osmosis guidance | Prefilter and postfilter | Typically every 6 months | Consult the owner’s manual for the exact model. |
| GE Appliances reverse-osmosis guidance | RO cartridge or membrane | Check TDS reduction annually; replace below 75% reduction, or at most every 3–5 years as needed | The 3–5-year statement is a maximum interval in that guidance, not a promise of life for every installation. |
| Aquasure Premier Series | Sediment and carbon filters | Every 6–12 months under normal operating conditions | Heavier sediment or lower-quality source water can require earlier service. |
| Aquasure Premier Series | RO membrane | Every 9–12 months under normal operating conditions | Aquasure says to replace the post-carbon or alkaline filter at the same time. |
| EPA WaterSense labeled point-of-use RO criterion | RO membrane | At least one year before replacement is required | This is a minimum product-performance criterion, not a replacement schedule for every RO system. The specification was released in November 2024; EPA issued technical clarifications in August 2026. |
The contrast between a 9–12-month membrane interval in one product line and a 3–5-year maximum in another is exactly why a cross-brand rule is unsafe. Use these numbers only to understand the kinds of schedules a manufacturer may publish.
How to find your purifier’s actual replacement date
- Identify the complete system. Record the manufacturer, model number, revision or series name, and the number of stages. The label may be on the housing, faucet, storage tank or control panel.
- Obtain the model-specific manual. Use the manual supplied with the unit or the manufacturer’s official support documentation. Do not rely on a cartridge listing that merely says “universal.”
- Make a stage-by-stage schedule. For every sediment, carbon, post-filter, membrane or specialty cartridge, write down its rated gallons, calendar limit and any indicator or test requirement.
- Apply the first applicable limit. If the instructions specify both a volume and a time period, change the part when either limit is reached. Low consumption does not automatically authorize exceeding a stated maximum calendar interval.
- Note installation and usage conditions. Record the installation date, household size, approximate daily use and whether the supply is municipal water, a private well or another source. These details help explain why a cartridge may reach its limit sooner than an average-use estimate.
- Set a reminder before the limit. A calendar reminder gives you time to obtain the exact replacement and prevents operation beyond the stated interval.
Use performance checks when the manual requires them
RO membrane TDS testing
Some RO systems use total dissolved solids (TDS) reduction rather than a fixed replacement date. In the GE example, the owner checks reduction annually and replaces the membrane if reduction falls below 75%, subject to the specific model manual.
To calculate reduction, measure feed-water TDS and treated-water TDS with the same correctly calibrated meter and use: (feed TDS − treated TDS) ÷ feed TDS × 100. For example, feed water at 300 mg/L and treated water at 60 mg/L represents 80% reduction. Temperature, pressure, meter accuracy, recently changed prefilters and sampling technique can affect readings, so follow the manufacturer’s test procedure and do not treat a casual single reading as a universal pass/fail test.

Indicators and alarms
A filter-life light, flow meter or alarm is useful only when it is configured for the exact system and reset as the manual directs. An indicator may count time or volume; it does not necessarily measure contaminant breakthrough. Replace or test according to the written instructions even if the light has not yet changed.
Signs that deserve attention before the scheduled date
Unexpected changes should prompt troubleshooting and a manual check, not an assumption that one symptom proves a cartridge is exhausted.
- Reduced flow: sediment loading, low inlet pressure, a closed valve, a kinked tube or a clogged screen can all reduce flow.
- New taste or odor: carbon exhaustion, stagnant water, installation errors or a plumbing issue are possible causes.
- Cloudiness, leakage or unusual noise: stop using the unit if the manual treats the condition as unsafe, inspect connections and obtain service guidance.
- Unexpected TDS or indicator results: verify the test method, membrane seating, prefilter condition and pressure before ordering parts.
Flow and taste alone cannot establish removal of a particular contaminant. Some loss of treatment performance is not obvious to the senses, which is why the rated interval and any specified test take priority.

Manufacturers’ “normal conditions” assume a particular feed-water quality and usage pattern. Aquasure specifically warns that well water, lower-quality source water and heavier sediment can shorten the life of its Premier Series prefilters and membrane. A private well may also have seasonal changes in turbidity or dissolved minerals.

If your source differs from the conditions stated in the manual, look for an earlier-replacement instruction or a required pretreatment step. A sediment prefilter that clogs quickly may indicate the need for better upstream sediment control rather than simply accepting repeated premature cartridge failures. Follow the purifier manufacturer’s limits; do not create a longer interval because a replacement seems inconvenient.
Choose a compatible replacement part
Cartridges are not automatically interchangeable. NSF warns that even a small dimensional mismatch can allow water to bypass the media rather than pass through it. A substitute may also use different materials, seals, flow characteristics or contaminant claims.
- Match the exact model and part number, including suffixes and revision letters.
- Confirm the connection type, dimensions, rated capacity and required flow direction.
- Check whether the part is intended for drinking-water contact and whether the certification applies to that specific cartridge.
- Inspect the replacement and its seals before installation; do not force a part that does not seat correctly.
- After installation, follow the manual’s flushing, leak-checking and reset instructions.
A cartridge that fits physically but is not the specified or certified part may not provide the same verified performance. Keep the old label or photograph the model number before disposal so the next order is easier to verify.
Certification tells you what a filter claims to reduce
Read the label for the contaminant and standard relevant to your household. CDC guidance associates NSF/ANSI 42 with aesthetic effects such as taste and odor, NSF/ANSI 53 with certain health-effect claims, and NSF/ANSI 58 with reverse-osmosis systems. The standard number alone does not mean a device reduces every contaminant.

For PFAS concerns, EPA guidance recommends looking for the applicable NSF/ANSI 53 or 58 certification and checking a certifier’s product directory. As of the cited April 2024 guidance, EPA noted that the referenced PFAS standards had not yet demonstrated reduction down to EPA’s newly established drinking-water levels. Therefore, verify the exact contaminant claim, concentration range and certification status rather than treating “NSF certified” as a blanket guarantee.
Certification and replacement timing answer different questions: certification describes verified reduction claims under specified conditions, while the service schedule describes when the manufacturer expects the component to remain within its rated performance.

EPA describes household treatment maintenance as potentially including filter replacement, disinfection, mineral removal and backwashing. An RO installation may have a membrane, prefilters, post-filters, storage tank and flow-control components, each with its own instructions.

How to compare two purifier schedules
If you are choosing between compatible systems, compare the maintenance burden rather than ranking them by one headline interval.
| Comparison point | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity and calendar limit | Rated gallons plus the maximum months or years for every stage | The first limit reached controls replacement. |
| Water-condition assumptions | Municipal versus well water, sediment limits, pressure and temperature ranges | Actual conditions can shorten service life. |
| Replacement trigger | Time counter, gallon counter, TDS test, pressure drop or other indicator | A measurable trigger can prevent relying on taste or flow alone. |
| Part compatibility | Exact model numbers, dimensions, seals and approved alternatives | A poor fit can create bypass and unfiltered flow. |
| Contaminant certification | Specific NSF/ANSI claim and contaminant, not just a general label | Certification is limited to stated claims and conditions. |
| Other maintenance | Disinfection, mineral removal, backwashing, flushing and professional checks | Cartridge cost and interval do not represent the entire workload. |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Applying “every six months” to every stage: different media and models have different limits.
- Extending a schedule because usage is light: a calendar maximum may still apply.
- Waiting for bad taste: some contaminants have no detectable taste or odor.
- Buying by appearance alone: similar dimensions do not prove compatibility or certification.
- Replacing only the membrane: prefilters and post-filters may be due separately or at the same time, depending on the manual.
- Ignoring source-water changes: a new well, construction work, seasonal turbidity or altered municipal supply can affect loading.
- Assuming certification covers every contaminant: verify the exact reduction claim and standard.
When to call for professional help
Use a qualified water-treatment technician or the manufacturer’s service channel when a housing will not seal, a leak persists, pressure is outside the specified range, TDS results remain abnormal after correctly replacing prefilters, or the manual calls for membrane testing, disinfection or plumbing changes. If the water supply itself may be contaminated, arrange appropriate source-water testing; a purifier cartridge cannot correct a problem it was not designed or certified to address.
Practical record for each replacement
Keep a simple log with the installation date, component and part number, meter reading or estimated gallons, source-water notes, TDS readings when applicable, and the next due date. Record why a part was changed early, such as heavy sediment or a failed seal. This history lets you distinguish a normal schedule from a developing water-quality or equipment problem and gives a service professional the information needed to diagnose it.
The answer for your household
The correct interval is the one specified for your purifier’s exact model and stage, adjusted only as the manufacturer directs for your water conditions and performance tests. Use the earliest stated gallon, time or test limit; fit the specified compatible part; and verify the contaminant certification that matters to your household. Manufacturer examples range from six-month prefilter changes to annual or longer membrane intervals, proving that a generic timetable cannot safely replace the manual.
