A standard U.S. household outlet is nominally 120 volts AC at 60 Hz. That is the expected supply, not a promise that every outlet will read exactly 120 volts. The answer changes by country, and some U.S. appliance outlets provide 240 volts.
How many volts is a standard U.S. wall outlet?
For an ordinary U.S. household receptacle, expect nominally 120 V AC at 60 Hz. The U.S. Department of Energy describes household electricity as 110–120 V at 60 Hz; Fluke identifies 120 V as the expected voltage for a standard residential outlet. In everyday use, “110” and “120” often refer to this same common U.S. supply, rather than two separate household systems. The Department of Energy summarizes the comparison: “In the United States, we use 110-120V (60 Hz), while in many other countries, 220-240V (50 Hz) is used.”
A voltage reading can vary with electrical-system conditions and where it is measured. Fluke lists 110–125 V AC as an expected troubleshooting range for a standard 120 V outlet, but that is the manufacturer’s reference—not a universal utility limit or legal tolerance for every location and condition. The available guidance does not establish one current acceptable range for all jurisdictions.
Why might a U.S. outlet provide 240 volts?
A typical U.S. home receives service with two 120 V conductors and a neutral. Standard receptacles use one 120 V leg; some larger appliances are served by 240 V circuits. So “household outlets are 120 volts” is a useful description of standard receptacles, not a rule for every receptacle in a home.

How does outlet voltage differ around the world?
There is no single worldwide outlet voltage. Many countries use supplies in the 220–240 V range, often at 50 Hz, while the common U.S. supply is 110–120 V at 60 Hz. As one specific example, Electrical Safety First lists Thailand at 230 V and 50 Hz. Plug and receptacle shapes also vary, so compare the supply voltage, frequency, plug type, and appliance rating rather than relying on plug fit alone.
Will a travel plug adapter make an appliance compatible?
No. A plug adapter changes whether a plug fits a socket; it does not convert voltage or frequency. Read the appliance’s input label and check whether its stated voltage range includes the destination supply. If it does, an adapter may be sufficient, subject to any frequency requirements. If it does not, use a suitable converter or transformer rated for the appliance’s power—or do not use the appliance on that supply. A converter or transformer has a maximum power rating; using the wrong equipment can be dangerous. Electrical Safety First’s guidance on using appliances abroad explains the voltage issue.

- 【Clear LCD Display & Bottom Indicators】- Equipped with a vibrant color LCD display, this tester shows whether an outlet is wired correctly (green for good, orange for faults) and displays real-time voltage. Bottom indicator lights enhance visibility in dark or tight spaces. The intuitive design makes it easy to read wiring status and voltage at a glance.
- 【Electrical Problem Checker】- Designed for North American 3-wire 120V outlets with CAT II 300V safety certification. Quickly test outlet voltage and detect seven common wiring faults: Correct Wiring, Open Ground, Open Neutral, Missing Live, Live & Ground Reversed, and Live & Neutral Reversed etc, ensuring safe and reliable electrical connections.
- 【One-Click GFCI Tester】- Press and hold the built-in button for 2 seconds to test the GFCI breaker. If it trips, the ground fault protection works. Use caution on regular outlets, as testing may cause wiring to trip. Ensure proper wiring and leakage current above 5mA for accurate results.
- 【Auto Hold for Hard-to-Reach Outlets】- The auto hold function captures test results, so you can easily check outlets behind furniture or in tight corners without needing to bend or rush. Perfect for home inspections and routine safety checks in older buildings or renovation projects.
- 【3 Year Warranty】- KAIWEETS provides a 3-year warranty and professional customer support. Package includes: 1× GFCI Outlet Tester, 2× AAA Batteries, and 1× User Manual. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us.
Can you measure an outlet’s voltage?
A digital multimeter set to AC voltage can measure the potential difference at a receptacle, but an outlet contains energized mains electricity. Only attempt a measurement if you know how to use appropriately rated equipment safely and can follow the meter manufacturer’s instructions. Otherwise, ask a qualified electrician. Fluke warns that leads left in the meter’s A or mA current jacks while measuring voltage can create a short circuit; check the instrument setup specified in its manual before any measurement.
Voltage is the electrical potential difference that drives current through a circuit. It is not the same as the current an appliance draws or the power it uses. If an outlet reading seems unexpected, do not diagnose the cause from the number alone; contact a qualified electrician or your utility as appropriate.
