How Much Extra Building Material Should You Order for Waste and Breakage?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no universal waste percentage. Measure the project’s net quantity, choose an allowance that matches the material and layout, multiply before package rounding, then round up to whole boxes, sheets, bundles, bags or stock lengths. Secondary estimating references often use about 5–10% for straightforward work, with higher allowances when cuts, patterns, openings, breakage risk or irregular geometry increase losses. Those figures are planning examples, not code requirements; confirm the order with the product manufacturer or supplier.

What the extra material is meant to cover

“Waste” is not one thing. Separating the causes makes an estimate more defensible and prevents you from applying the wrong percentage.

Cut waste

Cut waste is the material left after stock pieces are trimmed to fit walls, floors, roofs, openings and corners. A rectangular room with a straight flooring pattern usually creates fewer offcuts than a diagonal or herringbone installation. Hips, valleys, dormers and multiple roof penetrations create more cut pieces than a simple gable roof.

Breakage and defects

Breakage is material damaged during delivery, handling or installation. Defects can include warped boards, chipped tile, cracked sheets or unusable sections. The risk depends on the product, packaging, handling distance, site conditions and installer practices; it cannot be inferred from floor area alone.

Package rounding

Manufacturers sell many products in whole units: boxes of tile, sheets of drywall, bundles of shingles, bags of concrete or fixed stock lengths. The extra created by buying the next whole unit is package rounding, not installation waste. Apply your allowance first, then round the result up to the product’s actual coverage or order increment.

Compaction and settlement

Fill, soil and aggregate can require additional volume because they compact or settle. That is a material-behavior and specification issue, not cut waste. Use the project’s compaction factor and geotechnical or supplier guidance rather than adding a generic waste percentage.

Future repair stock

A few unopened pieces retained for future repairs are an intentional reserve, not job waste. This can be sensible when replacement batches may vary in color or finish. Ask the supplier how batch matching works and whether unopened material can be returned before deciding how much to keep.

The calculation that works for any material

  1. Measure the net quantity. Use one consistent unit (square feet, linear feet, cubic yards, board feet or pieces). Measure each distinct surface and document openings, slopes and changes in material.
  2. Select an allowance. Base it on geometry, pattern, number of cuts, handling exposure and the material’s package format. Treat published percentages as planning examples unless the manufacturer or contract documents state otherwise.
  3. Multiply before rounding. Use order quantity = net quantity × (1 + allowance ÷ 100).
  4. Convert to orderable units. Divide by the labeled coverage per box, sheet, bundle, bag or stock length.
  5. Round up once. You cannot order a fraction of a package, so round the unit count—not the allowance—to the next whole unit.
  6. Confirm with the supplier. Verify coverage, minimum increments, lot or batch matching, lead time, return rules and any product-specific overage recommendation.

For example, 100 square feet at a 10% allowance is 100 × 1.10 = 110 square feet. CalcBuilt published this arithmetic example on September 9, 2026; it demonstrates the method rather than an industry statistic. If a box covers 18 square feet, 110 ÷ 18 = 6.11, so the order is seven boxes (126 square feet). The 16 square feet above the 110-square-foot estimate is package rounding.

How to choose an allowance

Start with the lowest defensible figure for a simple, well-measured job and move upward when the project adds cuts, fragile handling or uncertainty. Two rooms with the same area can need different quantities because their shapes and patterns differ.

  • EASY-TO-USE: This laser measure features a simple, user-friendly layout with two-button operation: one for measuring, one for rounding
  • CLASS II LASER: Specs for this laser distance measuring tool are 635 nm; <1 mW
  • PORTABLE: This compact laser measurement tool is easy to carry and fits in your pocket
  • DISPLAY: BOSCH Blaze laser measure features a backlit display with large icons that allows measurements to be easily read, even in dark areas. It is brighter than its predecessor, the GLM20
  • Simple geometry: Rectangular surfaces, a straight pattern, few openings and long usable offcuts generally produce less cut waste.
  • Cut-intensive geometry: Diagonal, herringbone, mosaic and irregular layouts consume more material because more pieces are trimmed and fewer offcuts can be reused.
  • Many openings and small rooms: Doors, windows, vents, columns and short wall runs increase the proportion of unusable remnants.
  • Fragile or exposed handling: Tile, glass-like finishes and thin sheets may justify a larger breakage allowance when transport or site storage is difficult.
  • Uncertain dimensions: Incomplete drawings, uneven substrates or unresolved framing changes should be corrected with a better takeoff—not hidden by an arbitrary percentage.

State what your allowance covers. A “10%” that includes cuts and breakage is not comparable with a “10%” intended only for cuts. Keep any repair reserve as a separate line item.

Planning examples by material

The ranges below come from secondary estimating resources and are starting points only. They are not a unified standard, code table or substitute for installation instructions. Profound Estimates’ worksheet was reviewed September 28, 2026; Numbivo’s publication date was not stated in the search result.

Material Illustrative starting point What changes the quantity Order check
Ready-mix concrete Profound Estimates uses 5% as one common worksheet starting point. Uncertain dimensions, irregular excavations, base conditions, delivery increments and the consequences of a short pour. Confirm calculated volume, truck or supplier minimums and whether the specification requires a separate overage or contingency.
Framing lumber and sheathing Profound Estimates suggests 10% for lumber as a worksheet example. Board lengths, openings, defects, splice locations and roof geometry; complex roofs can increase sheet-good offcuts. Complete a piece-by-piece or length-based takeoff where practical, then verify stock lengths and bundle quantities.
Drywall Profound Estimates uses 10%; Numbivo gives 5–10% for simple planning. Short walls, sloped ceilings, small rooms, openings, sheet orientation and handling damage. Check sheet dimensions, labeled coverage and whether specialty moisture- or fire-rated boards are sold separately.
Plank flooring or carpet tile Profound Estimates gives 5–7% for square rooms; Numbivo lists 5–10% for simple layouts and 10–20% for diagonal or herringbone layouts. Pattern direction, room shape, thresholds, closets, transitions and the ability to reuse offcuts. Verify each carton’s coverage and dye lot or batch; keep a deliberate repair reserve separate from installation waste.
Tile Secondary references commonly show about 10% for straight layouts. Numbivo lists 7–12% straight and 10–20% diagonal or herringbone; Profound Estimates gives 10–15% as an illustrative range. Tile size, grout layout, niches, plumbing penetrations, mosaics, diagonal cuts, pattern matching and fragility. Use the installer’s room-by-room takeoff and confirm lot matching, shade variation and box coverage with the supplier.
Roofing shingles Profound Estimates uses 10% for simple shingles on a gable roof and 15% or more for hips and cut-up roofs. Hips, valleys, dormers, multiple penetrations, rake and eave cuts, starter and ridge details. Verify shingle bundles, starter strips, ridge caps, underlayment and accessories separately; do not use shingle waste to estimate accessories.
Paint Profound Estimates lists 5–10% only as a general worksheet example. Labelled coverage, surface texture and porosity, number of coats, color changes, spray versus roller application and touch-up needs. Calculate from the product label and measured surface area. Buy enough from the same batch for touch-ups when color matching matters.

These examples use different definitions and ranges. They should not be combined into a single “standard percentage.” For a special-order product, the supplier’s written recommendation and the manufacturer’s installation guidance take precedence.

Worked examples

Flooring in a straight rectangular room

A room measures 12 by 15 feet, or 180 square feet net. If you choose a 7% planning allowance for a straight plank layout, the adjusted quantity is 180 × 1.07 = 192.6 square feet. With cartons covering 22.5 square feet, 192.6 ÷ 22.5 = 8.56, so order nine cartons. If you want two unopened cartons for future repairs, list those 45 square feet separately rather than calling them waste.

Tile with a diagonal pattern

A 100-square-foot floor with a diagonal pattern may justify a higher planning allowance than a straight layout. At 15%, the adjusted quantity is 115 square feet. If cartons cover 12 square feet, 115 ÷ 12 = 9.58, so order 10 cartons. Confirm the final number against the installer’s cut plan, because tile size, border details and penetrations can move the result.

Concrete where a short pour is costly

Calculate the designed volume from the actual dimensions and specification first. A generic 5% worksheet allowance may be a starting conversation, but it does not account for every excavation irregularity or supplier increment. Ask the ready-mix supplier how orders are sold, what minimum load applies and what quantity they recommend for the measured pour.

Paint using coverage rather than a waste percentage

Measure the paintable surface, subtract openings where appropriate, and divide by the label’s coverage per coat. Multiply by the required number of coats, then select whole containers. Adjust for porous or heavily textured surfaces and retain a small, intentional touch-up quantity if the color must be matched later.

Measurement and takeoff practices that reduce surprises

Keep a room-by-room worksheet

Record length, width, height, openings, pattern direction, material type and net quantity for every surface. A takeoff worksheet keeps distinct areas from being blended into one optimistic average and makes supplier questions easier to answer.

Map reusable offcuts

For flooring, tile, drywall and sheathing, note where long or large remnants can be used. Do not assume every offcut is reusable: grain direction, pattern matching, minimum piece size and damaged edges may make it unusable.

Measure difficult geometry separately

Calculate hips, valleys, alcoves, niches, stair treads, curved walls and other irregular areas as separate line items. This exposes the portions that need a higher allowance instead of inflating an entire project.

Use tools appropriately

A laser distance measurer can speed room measurements, but it does not decide where cuts, joints or openings occur. Check critical dimensions manually and transfer the results to a takeoff that another person can audit.

Before placing the order

  • Confirm the net measurement and units for every surface.
  • Write the allowance percentage and exactly what losses it includes.
  • Check product coverage per box, sheet, bundle, bag, roll or stock length.
  • Round the final package count up once; do not repeatedly add percentages.
  • Separate installation waste, breakage contingency and future repair stock.
  • Verify color, shade, dye lot or batch requirements for visible finishes.
  • Ask about special-order lead times, minimum increments and return conditions; policies vary by supplier.
  • Confirm accessories independently: fasteners, adhesive, underlayment, starter courses, ridge pieces, trim and joint materials are not automatically covered by the main material’s percentage.
  • Keep the takeoff, invoices and unopened reserve units for later repairs or reconciliation.

Common estimating mistakes and fixes

Using one percentage for every trade

Problem: A single number ignores the difference between paint coverage, tile cuts, concrete volume and roof geometry. Fix: choose an allowance by material and layout, and document the reason.

Rounding the net area before applying the allowance

Problem: Early rounding compounds error. Fix: retain measured precision through the multiplication, then round only the final orderable unit.

Confusing package rounding with waste

Problem: A box that leaves extra coverage is reported as installation waste. Fix: show adjusted quantity and package rounding as separate figures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring pattern direction

Problem: A diagonal or herringbone layout is priced like a straight layout. Fix: revise the allowance or obtain an installer’s cut plan before ordering.

Applying cut-waste logic to fill

Problem: Compaction and settlement are not offcuts. Fix: use the project specification, measured in-place volume and supplier or geotechnical guidance.

Ordering a different batch for repairs

Problem: Later production may differ in shade, texture or dimensions. Fix: ask whether a reserve from the current batch is worthwhile and store it in the manufacturer’s recommended conditions.

When supplier confirmation is essential

Get written or documented confirmation for special-order finishes, large concrete pours, roofing systems with complex geometry, products sold only in fixed increments and any job where a shortage would stop the crew. Provide the supplier with your net takeoff, proposed allowance, layout or roof plan and required delivery date. Ask them to verify coverage, accessories, batch matching, minimum order quantities and returns. Secondary estimating guides can help you start the conversation, but they do not replace product-specific instructions or the supplier’s takeoff.

Bottom line

Measure net quantities accurately, choose an allowance that reflects the actual cuts and breakage risk, multiply before package rounding, and verify the result against the product’s order units. Roughly 5–10% can be a planning starting point for simpler work, while diagonal patterns, complex roofs, many openings, fragile materials and irregular geometry may require more. Treat every published percentage as an example until the manufacturer, installer or supplier confirms the order for your specific project.
