Installing a generator transfer switch can cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars to several thousand, depending on whether you choose an interlock, a manual transfer switch, or an automatic switch—and what the installation quote includes. Published U.S. estimates range from $400 to $5,500 across these configurations, but they are not directly comparable. Treat them as planning ranges, then get itemized quotes for your home.
Installed cost by transfer-switch type
The figures below come from cost guides and one Maine contractor, not a nationally representative price survey. Each source describes a different scope, so the ranges should not be averaged together or treated as guaranteed local prices.
| Option | How it works | Published installed estimate | Scope and comparison notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Generator interlock kit | A panel-compatible mechanical device that permits a portable generator connection; operation is manual. | $400–$850 in HomeGuide’s 2026 guide; $750–$1,400 in a Maine contractor’s examples. | The Maine contractor says its examples include an inlet box, wiring, breakers, permit, and inspection. Panel compatibility is essential. HomeGuide; Chase Electric. |
| Manual transfer switch | Lets the homeowner transfer selected circuits or loads between utility and generator power. | $400–$1,300 in HomeGuide’s 2026 guide; $1,000–$2,200 for a 6–10 circuit setup in UseCalcPro’s 2026 estimate; $1,200–$1,800 in the Maine contractor’s examples. | Price depends on circuit count, switch rating, wiring, and included materials. The Maine contractor says its examples include an inlet box, wiring, breakers, permit, and inspection. HomeGuide; UseCalcPro; Chase Electric. |
| Automatic transfer switch | Automatically changes the electrical connection between utility and generator power; commonly used with standby-generator systems. | $600–$2,500 in HomeGuide’s 2026 guide; $1,800–$5,500 for a 100–200A switch in UseCalcPro’s 2026 estimate. | Compare amperage, supported loads, generator integration, and what installation work is included. UseCalcPro describes its estimate as bundled, including hardware, applicable connection materials, labor, permit, and inspection. HomeGuide; UseCalcPro. |
UseCalcPro says its page was published June 12, 2026, and updated October 3, 2026; it is a secondary cost estimate, not verified market-survey data. HomeGuide’s page is presented as 2026 guidance but does not expose a specific publication date. The Maine figures are examples from one contractor, not a national benchmark.
Why the price varies
Switch type, rating, and coverage
An interlock, a manual transfer switch, and an automatic transfer switch are different equipment and operating arrangements. A manual installation covering 6–10 circuits is not the same scope as a 100–200A automatic switch. More circuits or broader load coverage can affect equipment selection and the work involved.

Compatibility with the panel and generator
The equipment must suit the electrical panel, generator output, and loads you intend to power. Generac lists its Single Load 100A Manual Transfer Switch, model 6334, for portable generators starting at 5 kW, but that specification does not establish that it fits a particular home or generator setup. Check the product details with an electrician; Generac recommends installation be completed by a certified electrician.
Wiring route and connection materials
Depending on the design, a quote may include an inlet box, wiring, conduit, breakers, and other connection materials. A longer or more difficult route can change the work required, but the cited guides do not establish a universal per-foot adjustment. An inlet box is included in the Maine contractor’s examples; it should not be assumed to be identical or necessary in every installation.

Permits, inspections, labor, and existing conditions
Permit and inspection requirements depend on the local jurisdiction. The Maine contractor says its examples include both; UseCalcPro also includes permit and post-install inspection in its bundled estimate. The sources do not establish one national labor rate or quantify the cost of panel upgrades for a particular property. Ask the electrician to identify any required panel work or repairs after assessing the existing electrical system.
