Building an outdoor living space in the United States can cost anywhere from about $1,500 to $180,000, according to Angi’s 2026 guide, with a broad average of $7,800. That range combines very different projects, however, so it is not a quote for a defined build. A small patio may cost a few thousand dollars, while a covered structure, outdoor kitchen, elevated deck, or enclosed sunroom can push the project into the tens of thousands.
For a useful budget, define the project first: patio, deck, pergola or roof, kitchen, fire feature, or enclosed room. Then price the size, materials, site preparation, utilities, permits, labor, and furnishings separately. The benchmarks below provide planning ranges; only an itemized, local estimate can establish your actual construction cost.

What counts as an outdoor living space?
“Outdoor living space” is an umbrella term rather than a single construction type. It can describe a basic slab or paver patio, a raised deck, a pergola, a roofed outdoor room, a built-in kitchen, or an enclosed sunroom. Each has different foundations, materials, labor, inspections, and utility requirements.

A patio with movable furniture is usually a simpler hardscape project. A deck may require posts, beams, stairs, guardrails, and more demanding structural inspections. A kitchen adds cabinetry, countertops, appliances, gas, water, drainage, and electrical work. An enclosed room introduces walls, windows, insulation, weatherproofing, and potentially heating and cooling. Combining several elements explains why published prices span such a wide range.

2026 cost benchmarks by project type
The following figures are U.S. consumer-guide and contractor-survey benchmarks. They use different methods, locations, project sizes, and inclusions, so they should not be added together as though they were a standardized package.
| Project | Published cost range | Average or median | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outdoor living space overall | $1,500–$180,000 | $7,800 average | Angi’s 2026 broad guide covering unlike project types and scales |
| Patio | $1,900–$5,300; also $5–$50 per square foot | Range rather than one defined package | Angi’s 2026 guide; material, size, and site conditions vary |
| Deck | $4,100–$11,220 | Range | Angi’s 2026 guide for deck projects of differing sizes and specifications |
| Sunroom | $20,800–$72,600 | Range | Angi’s 2026 guide for an enclosed addition |
| 450-square-foot paver patio | $8,500–$27,000 | $17,750 average | Typical installed mid-range residential project in Techo-Bloc’s 2025 U.S. Contractor Survey |
| Mid-size built-in BBQ, kitchen, or bar | $13,000–$36,000 | $24,500 average | Techo-Bloc’s 2025 U.S. Contractor Survey; installed mid-range project benchmark |
| Outdoor kitchen | $6,269–$27,087 | $16,533 average | HomeAdvisor 2026 page data; depends on size, materials, labor, and scope |
| Pergola | $2,118–$6,433 | $4,253 average | HomeAdvisor, June 2026 typical range |
| Prefab outdoor-kitchen product order | $10,330–$33,807 middle 80% | $19,355 median | RTA Outdoor Living 2026 shipped product orders; installation and site work may be separate |
The $17,750 paver-patio average is for a specified 450-square-foot, mid-range installation, while Angi’s patio range covers a much broader set of sizes and materials. The same distinction applies to kitchens: a product-order median is not the installed cost of a completed kitchen.
How much does an outdoor patio cost?
Angi’s 2026 guide places patios at $1,900–$5,300 on average and gives a wider planning figure of $5–$50 per square foot. The lower end may fit a modest, accessible project with economical materials and limited preparation. The upper end can reflect premium pavers, complex patterns, demolition, grading, drainage, retaining work, or difficult access.
For a more specific benchmark, Techo-Bloc’s 2025 U.S. Contractor Survey reports $8,500–$27,000, averaging $17,750, for an approximately 450-square-foot installed mid-range paver patio. That survey benchmark is not interchangeable with a simple concrete pad or a small patio. Ask whether a proposal includes excavation, base aggregate, edge restraints, bedding sand, polymeric joint material, drainage, demolition, delivery, and sealing.
Patio cost questions to settle before signing
- What is the finished square footage, and does it include steps, walkways, or borders?
- Is the price for poured concrete, pavers, natural stone, or another material?
- Are excavation, soil removal, grading, compaction, and drainage included?
- Who handles delivery, disposal, utility locating, and restoration of disturbed lawn or fencing?
- Are lighting, a cover, fire feature, built-in seating, and furniture excluded?
How much does a deck, pergola, or covered structure cost?
Angi lists a $4,100–$11,220 range for decks in its 2026 guide. Deck cost is driven by height, footprint, framing design, stairs, railings, footing depth, material, and access. Pressure-treated wood, composite boards, and premium hardwoods have different material and installation costs. Elevated decks can also require engineering, inspections, and substantial excavation for footings.

For a freestanding or attached pergola, HomeAdvisor’s June 2026 guide reports $2,118–$6,433, with an average of $4,253. A pergola may be open to the sky, while a roofed structure has additional framing, roofing, flashing, drainage, and often permit requirements. Confirm whether a quoted “cover” is a decorative pergola, a weatherproof roof, or a screened or enclosed room; those descriptions do not represent the same scope.
What does an outdoor kitchen cost?
HomeAdvisor’s 2026 page data gives an outdoor-kitchen range of $6,269–$27,087, with $16,533 reported as the average for most homeowners. The guide says size, materials, labor, and scope determine the result. A built-in grill with a short counter run is fundamentally different from a kitchen with a refrigerator, sink, storage, multiple burners, lighting, and utility connections.

Techo-Bloc’s 2025 U.S. Contractor Survey reports $13,000–$36,000, averaging $24,500, for a mid-size built-in BBQ, kitchen, or bar. That installed benchmark may include a more substantial masonry or hardscape context than a basic modular unit, so compare inclusions rather than selecting the lowest headline number.
Prefab kitchen order data and layout differences
RTA Outdoor Living reported a $19,355 median product-order amount in 2026, with the middle 80% of shipped orders between $10,330 and $33,807. The data covered orders placed from January 1 through September 21 in each year and represents one supplier’s product orders, not a national installed-construction index. RTA says foundations, site preparation, permits, utility connections, delivery details, and installation may be separate.
| RTA layout | 2026 median product order | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Linear | $14,410 | Product-order amount; construction and installation may be additional |
| L-shaped | $22,521 | Product-order amount; more cabinetry and countertop length typically drive the higher median |
| U-shaped | $33,994 | Product-order amount; largest reported layout in this supplier data |
RTA reported that its median product order rose 17.9%, from $16,409 in 2025 to $19,355 in 2026. The company attributed about 70% of that increase to customer choices such as larger kitchens and additional or upgraded appliances. Because this is supplier-released order data, it should not be treated as evidence that every builder’s installed prices rose by the same percentage.

James King, RTA Outdoor Living’s vice president of design, described the shift this way: “People aren’t just putting an island with a grill and fridge on the patio anymore. They’re planning a real second kitchen, with the prep space, storage and appliances to match.” He also noted that homeowners often add a sink and prep area after walking through how a real meal will be prepared. These are company-released observations, not independent consumer research, but they illustrate why an appliance list can expand after design begins.

HomeAdvisor estimates labor at 20%–40% of an outdoor-kitchen project. Angi’s broad outdoor-room guide says labor can account for 50% or more of total project cost. These are source-specific estimates, not universal rules. A kitchen requiring gas, water, drainage, electrical circuits, concrete footings, masonry, and inspections will have a different labor mix from a freestanding cart placed on an existing slab.
Require the quote to identify the grill, burners, refrigerator, sink, ice maker, storage, countertop material, cabinet construction, electrical outlets, gas regulator, shutoff valves, water lines, drain method, foundation, delivery, assembly, and final connections. If a contractor excludes any of those items, obtain a separate allowance before comparing bids.
What factors change the total budget?
1. Scope and size
Every additional square foot can increase excavation, base material, framing, finish material, labor, and drainage. A roof, raised platform, kitchen, or enclosed room also introduces structural requirements that a ground-level patio does not have.
2. Materials and finish level
Concrete, pavers, natural stone, wood decking, composite decking, masonry, tile, countertops, cabinetry, and appliances occupy different price tiers. Premium finishes can increase both material and installation time. Specify product lines, thicknesses, colors, edge details, and construction methods rather than accepting “standard” as a specification.

3. Site preparation and access
Clearing, demolition, grading, tree-root removal, unsuitable soil, drainage correction, retaining walls, and long equipment paths can add significant work. A fenced backyard with no equipment access may require hand excavation, smaller deliveries, temporary fence removal, or additional labor.
4. Labor and trade coordination
Outdoor projects may involve a general contractor, concrete or paver installer, carpenter, electrician, plumber, gas fitter, roofer, landscaper, and inspector. Coordination is part of the project cost. Ask who is responsible for scheduling each trade and correcting conflicts between the hardscape, structure, appliances, and utilities.
5. Permits and utility connections
Angi’s outdoor-room guide suggests budgeting $400–$1,500 for permits and $500–$6,000 for land preparation. HomeAdvisor’s outdoor-kitchen guide gives a different broad permit range of $250–$2,000 and notes that utility connections can add cost. These are guide estimates, not locally verified fees. Your city or county may require permits for footings, decks, roofs, gas, electrical work, plumbing, or enclosed additions.
6. Optional features and furnishings
Lighting, ceiling fans, heaters, fire features, screens, drainage, planting, irrigation, sound systems, and built-in seating should appear as separate line items. Angi lists outdoor chat sets at $350–$5,000 or more; that is a furnishing purchase, not a construction cost. Keep furniture and décor outside the structural budget so the amount reserved for the build is not quietly consumed by accessories.
How to create a realistic outdoor-living budget
- Write a scope statement. State the exact elements: for example, a 450-square-foot paver patio, a pergola, an outdoor kitchen, stairs, lighting, or a sunroom. Include dimensions and whether the structure is attached to the house.
- Document existing conditions. Note grade changes, drainage, soil, trees, utilities, property lines, access width, fences, and demolition. Photos and a basic site plan help contractors identify hidden work.
- Choose performance requirements before finishes. Decide whether the space must provide rain protection, shade, winter use, cooking, refrigeration, hot-water service, or enclosure. Those requirements determine structure and utility work before color and style choices.
- Obtain permit information from the local authority. Ask which permits, inspections, setbacks, engineering documents, and utility approvals apply. Put the responsible party and fee allowance in writing.
- Request itemized bids from qualified contractors. Require quantities, material specifications, labor, demolition, preparation, delivery, installation, taxes, permit handling, utility work, cleanup, schedule, and warranty terms.
- Separate allowances from fixed prices. A provisional amount for rock excavation, electrical service, or countertop selection is not the same as a fixed price. Ask what triggers a change order and how it will be priced.
- Reserve contingency for unknown conditions. The percentage should reflect the site and scope; a constrained site with excavation and multiple utilities needs more protection than a simple patio on prepared ground. Have the contractor identify the specific risks rather than hiding contingency in an unexplained lump sum.
- Approve drawings and appliance specifications before ordering. Confirm clearances, door swings, ventilation, gas and electrical loads, drainage, countertop openings, and access for replacement appliances.
How to compare two outdoor-living bids
The lowest total is not necessarily the least expensive project if it omits preparation, utilities, permits, or finish work. Place competing proposals in a side-by-side comparison using the same scope.

When a sunroom or enclosed room changes the project
Angi’s 2026 sunroom benchmark is $20,800–$72,600. An enclosed room is closer to an addition than to a patio because it may require a foundation, framed walls, windows, insulation, roofing, electrical service, heating or cooling, weatherproofing, and code-compliant egress. Confirm whether the published estimate includes design, engineering, foundation, interior finishes, HVAC, and connection to the existing house. A screened porch or three-season room may have a different specification and price from a fully conditioned room.
Common budgeting mistakes and how to avoid them
Treating the broad average as a quote
The $7,800 overall average combines projects from small patios to major outdoor rooms. Use it only as evidence that projects vary widely; do not multiply it by your home size or assume it represents a typical kitchen.
Comparing a product order with an installed project
Prefab kitchen order data can exclude foundations, site preparation, permits, utility connections, delivery, assembly, and installation. Add those items explicitly before comparing it with a turnkey contractor proposal.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteForgetting the ground beneath the finish
A beautiful paver or deck material cannot compensate for inadequate excavation, compaction, drainage, or footings. Ask for the construction assembly and inspection points, not just the surface finish.
Adding features after construction starts
Moving a sink, adding a gas appliance, or extending a roof can require new trenches, framing, permits, and structural changes. Finalize appliance and utility decisions before excavation and fabrication.
Assuming furniture belongs in the construction allowance
Furniture, décor, and portable heaters are useful additions but should be funded separately. Keeping them outside the construction total makes it easier to protect the budget for foundations, structure, utilities, and durable finishes.
Bottom line
A practical planning answer to “How much does it cost to build an outdoor living space?” is $1,500–$180,000 nationally for the broad range of projects covered by Angi’s 2026 guide, with a $7,800 average that is too general to price a specific home. Expect a patio or pergola to occupy the lower tiers, a deck or substantial paver installation to move higher, and a kitchen, roofed structure, or sunroom to require much more. Define the scope, verify local permits and utilities, and compare itemized bids with identical inclusions before committing.
