What does the fumigation price include?
“Fumigation” may refer to tenting and treating an entire structure, but a quote may instead cover localized treatment or a different method. Confirm exactly what the provider means before comparing prices: the pest being treated, areas and contents included, and whether the proposal is for whole-structure fumigation.

Building size and construction
Larger structures can require more treatment material and labor. Angi’s broad per-square-foot estimate reflects the relationship between size and cost, but it is not a formula that will reliably predict a particular job. Pest and treatment objective
The pest and the extent of treatment affect the work proposed. Angi reports different estimates by pest and notes that termites and wood-boring beetles can involve more intensive work. For bed bugs, Cornell describes whole-unit or whole-house heat treatment or fumigation as costing several thousand dollars, but that qualitative figure is not a current surveyed rate and should not be treated as a direct comparison with Angi’s whole-house average. Local sources do not establish a dependable formula for adjusting national estimates to a specific property or region. Ask each bidder to inspect the structure or explain the assumptions behind the estimate, and compare proposals for the same pest, treatment method and coverage.

Is fumigation the right treatment?
Drywood termites
For drywood termites, whole-structure fumigation can address hidden infestations throughout a structure. UC IPM also describes localized treatments and heat, a nonchemical whole-structure option with its own technical requirements. The right choice depends on inspection findings, the infestation’s location and the treatment’s coverage. UC IPM notes that tarpaulins can damage roofs and that occupants, pets and plants must leave for several days, depending on the structure and process. Bed bugs
Fumigation is not automatically necessary for every bed bug problem. Ask a qualified provider to explain what the inspection found and why it recommends whole-structure fumigation rather than targeted treatment or another integrated management approach. What should you compare in written quotes?
EPA advises that “cost should not be the only factor that determines the company you pick.” Compare the plan as well as the total. EPA’s provider-selection guidance
- What pest and evidence of infestation is the treatment addressing?
- Is the proposal for whole-structure fumigation, localized treatment, heat or another method?
- Which rooms, attached structures and contents are included or excluded?
- Is the price fixed, or can it change after inspection? What could trigger additional charges?
- What preparation must the household complete, and which supplies are included?
- How long will occupants be away, and who confirms safe re-entry?
- Does the price include gas monitoring, follow-up inspection, retreatment or a warranty? What are the terms?
- Are the company and applicator licensed for this work where the property is located?
- Are there access or property risks, including possible roof or landscaping damage?
A termite-treatment estimate is not necessarily a fumigation estimate: Mississippi State University Extension gives a rough $1,000–$2,000 initial-treatment estimate for most single-family termite homes, but that figure covers termite treatment generally, not fumigation specifically. What does structural fumigation require?
Structural fumigation typically involves sealing the building under a tarp, applying fumigant, then aerating the structure and monitoring it before re-entry. NPIC says sulfuryl fluoride products may be used only by certified applicators because EPA classifies them as restricted-use pesticides. Applicators check that sulfuryl fluoride levels do not exceed the EPA-established limit of 1 part per million before people may return. NPIC’s structural fumigation guidance
People, pets and plants must leave; preparation instructions may also cover fish, reptiles, food, feed, tobacco, medications, drawers and cabinets, pilot lights and heating elements. Follow the treating company’s instructions for your specific structure rather than assuming a general checklist is sufficient. Confirm the full absence and re-entry schedule in advance. State requirements vary; property owners can check their state agriculture department’s rules, such as Florida FDACS’s structural fumigation information.
