How Much Does a Kitchen Island Remodel Cost? Budget Items to Include (2026 Guide)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A kitchen island remodel has no single national price because an existing island can involve anything from new cabinet fronts and a countertop to relocated plumbing, gas and electrical work. As a 2026 planning reference, Angi data reported by NerdWallet puts the average cost to add a kitchen island at $4,800, while custom builds can cost $10,000 or more. Those figures are not quotes for remodeling your island. Your total depends on the island’s size, utility connections, materials, appliances, labor and local permit requirements.

The safest way to budget is to price every component separately, identify which connections already exist, and obtain an itemized estimate from a local contractor before choosing finishes or appliances.

What does a kitchen island remodel cost?

The most useful published benchmark is the 2026 Angi-attributed average of $4,800 to add a kitchen island, reported by NerdWallet in a guide updated April 15, 2026. The same guide says custom builds can reach $10,000 or more. Because those figures describe adding an island rather than renovating an existing one, treat them as national planning ranges, not a guaranteed remodel price or a local bid.

An existing island may need only replacement doors, drawers, panels and a new top. At the other end of the scope, removing the old construction, enlarging the footprint, moving a sink or cooktop, adding circuits, installing appliances and repairing floors can make the project substantially more complex. Josh Beisley, an estimator and former project manager with Building Specialists Inc. in Virginia’s Roanoke Valley, explains: If you want to include a sink or cooktop, and there are no existing plumbing, gas or electrical connections in the right location, that drives up the cost.

Use the following figures as line-item planning information. They are Angi 2026 data as reported by NerdWallet; they are not independently verified regional quotes.

Budget item Reported 2026 planning range What changes the price
Cabinetry $100–$1,300 per linear foot Stock, semi-custom or custom construction; cabinet depth, doors, drawers, finish, panels and hardware
Countertop $20–$350 per square foot Material, total surface area, fabrication, seams, cutouts and edge profile
Sink $400–$1,500 Fixture type, material, mounting method and required countertop cutout
Faucet $125–$300 Style, finish, features and installation requirements
Plumbing $500–$1,900 Distance to supply and drain lines, floor or slab access, venting and connection changes
Electrical wiring $7–$12 per linear foot Run length, access, circuit requirements and whether existing capacity is adequate
Outlets $150–$400 Number and type of receptacles, box installation and circuit work
Dishwasher $700–$2,000 Appliance selection, cabinet opening, water, drain and electrical connections
Garbage disposal $250–$550 Unit, sink compatibility, plumbing and electrical connection
Oven and cooktop $700–$1,800 Appliance type, ventilation, gas or electrical service and countertop work
Built-in wine cooler $300–$3,000 Capacity, ventilation clearance, cabinet integration and electrical service

Do not add every range mechanically. A sink, for example, may already be part of a cabinet package; plumbing work may be minimal when suitable lines are nearby; and an appliance allowance may include some installation but not floor access, permit work or finish repairs. Ask the contractor to state exactly what each allowance covers.

Budget the cabinets and island structure first

Cabinet type and configuration

Cabinetry often sets the island’s footprint and storage capacity. The reported range of $100–$1,300 per linear foot is broad because it spans basic cabinet components and highly customized work. Before requesting prices, decide whether you need doors, drawers, open shelving, seating overhang, trash storage, specialty inserts or finished panels on every exposed side.

  • Size: Longer or deeper islands require more cabinet boxes, panels, fillers and countertop.
  • Storage layout: Deep drawers, pull-outs and appliance garages generally require more construction than simple doors and shelves.
  • Finish: Paint, stain, specialty colors and matching an existing kitchen can change both material and labor requirements.
  • Hardware: Pulls, knobs and soft-close mechanisms should appear as a separate allowance so you can compare bids fairly.
  • End panels and back panels: An island is visible from multiple directions; finished sides cost more than unfinished cabinet ends.

Reuse versus replacement

If the existing boxes are square, sound and in the right location, reusing them may allow a lower-cost update with new fronts, hardware and a countertop. Reuse is less practical when the island has water damage, poor storage, an unstable base, an unsuitable height or utilities that must be relocated. Have the estimator distinguish salvageable components from items that must be replaced rather than assuming an upcycle will work.

Countertop costs and the details that create allowances

The reported countertop range is $20–$350 per square foot. The material itself is only part of the calculation. Your quote should identify the measured surface area, slab or sheet requirements, fabrication, edge profile, seams, sink cutout, cooktop cutout and installation.

Questions to ask about the top

  • Is the price based on the final field measurement or an early estimate?
  • Are sink and cooktop cutouts included, and who is responsible if appliance dimensions change?
  • Does the edge treatment cover all exposed sides and the seating overhang?
  • Are delivery, templating, seams and disposal of the old top included?
  • What happens if the existing cabinets are not level enough for the new material?

A larger island increases cost twice: it needs more cabinet construction and more countertop area. A smaller footprint or a simpler edge can preserve work surface while reducing the material and fabrication allowance.

Plumbing, sink and faucet: the utility decision that changes the budget

A sink adds more than the fixture purchase. The sink allowance is reported at $400–$1,500 and the faucet at $125–$300, while plumbing work is reported at $500–$1,900. Those numbers can overlap in a contractor’s installed price, so require a written scope instead of treating them as independent charges.

Existing connections

Find out whether hot and cold supplies, a drain and any required venting are already located beneath the island. A remodel that keeps the sink in place may need limited reconnection. Moving it can require opening flooring or a slab, extending lines, adjusting the drain route and repairing finished surfaces. The estimator should identify which access method is assumed.

Sink-related checklist

  • Sink model, dimensions and mounting style
  • Faucet, shutoff valves and any filtration or dispenser connections
  • Drain, trap and venting arrangement
  • Dishwasher connection if that appliance is beside the sink
  • Garbage disposal and its electrical requirements
  • Countertop cutout, support and sealing

Beisley also notes that The cost can vary greatly depending on size, features and existing conditions. That is especially relevant when the island’s location was not originally designed for plumbing.

Electrical, gas and cooking equipment

Electrical work should be priced separately from appliances. The reported planning range is $7–$12 per linear foot for wiring and $150–$400 for outlets. Your scope may also need a dedicated circuit, new boxes, code-required receptacles, lighting or connections for a dishwasher, disposal, wine cooler or cooktop.

Cooktop or oven

The reported allowance for an oven and cooktop is $700–$1,800. Confirm whether that figure covers one appliance or a combination, delivery, installation, electrical or gas connections, ventilation and countertop cutouts. A gas cooktop may require a new gas route and shutoff; an electric or induction unit may require electrical capacity that the existing panel cannot provide. Ventilation requirements can also affect cabinetry and ceiling or wall work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Outlets and lighting

List every intended receptacle and light before framing the island. Include outlet locations, under-counter or over-island lighting, switches, dimmers and appliance connections. A quote that says only “electrical included” is difficult to compare because it may omit circuit upgrades, finish repairs or permit-related work.

Appliances and extras: separate essentials from later upgrades

Optional features can quickly consume the contingency in an island budget. The 2026 reported ranges are $700–$2,000 for a dishwasher, $250–$550 for a garbage disposal, $700–$1,800 for an oven and cooktop, and $300–$3,000 for a built-in wine cooler.

Make a must-have list

  1. Mark appliances required for the kitchen’s daily workflow.
  2. Mark features that can remain elsewhere, such as a second beverage refrigerator.
  3. Decide which upgrades can be roughed in now and installed later.
  4. Confirm cabinet openings and utility locations before ordering appliances.

Phasing is useful only when the first phase includes the concealed work needed for the later feature. For example, omitting a dishwasher now may still require planning for its cabinet width, water, drain and electrical route if you want to add it without rebuilding the island.

Labor, demolition and installation: make the scope visible

Labor is not a miscellaneous remainder. Ask the contractor to identify demolition, disposal, cabinet assembly, leveling, countertop templating and installation, plumbing, electrical, gas, appliance setting, floor repairs, drywall or paint touch-up and final cleanup. The cited guide does not provide a comprehensive standalone price for every demolition, disposal, fabrication or permit scenario in an existing-island remodel, so those items must be written into the local estimate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Request a general contractor’s estimate that names subcontracted trades and states who schedules inspections. Compare bids on identical drawings and appliance specifications; a lower total may simply exclude utility work or finish restoration.

Permits and local checks

Permit requirements depend on your jurisdiction and on the island’s construction. The cited guidance says requirements can vary with whether the island is stationary and with its size. Ask the local building official which permits and inspections apply before work starts. A fixed island involving plumbing, gas or electrical changes is more likely to need review than a movable piece of furniture, but only the authority having jurisdiction can confirm your case.

  • Provide the island plan, dimensions and utility changes when asking about permits.
  • Ask whether separate plumbing, electrical or gas permits are required.
  • Confirm inspection stages and whether work must remain accessible.
  • Include permit fees and required corrections in the written estimate.

How to build an accurate kitchen island remodel budget

  1. Document existing conditions. Measure length, width and height; photograph cabinet interiors, flooring, ceiling, nearby walls and every utility connection.
  2. Define the function. Decide whether the island is for prep, seating, storage, cleaning, cooking or a combination.
  3. Choose a preliminary layout. Show cabinet depths, drawers, finished panels, seating overhang, sink, cooktop, outlets and appliance openings.
  4. Separate fixed work from selections. Put demolition, framing, utility relocation and installation in one section; put cabinets, countertop, fixtures and appliances in another.
  5. Identify assumptions. Record which connections remain, where access will occur, who supplies appliances and whether floor or finish repairs are included.
  6. Obtain itemized local bids. Give each contractor the same plan and request labor, materials, permits, allowances and exclusions as separate lines.
  7. Resolve allowances before signing. Replace vague allowances with selected models or clearly stated caps, especially for countertop, sink, faucet and appliances.
  8. Keep a contingency for revealed conditions. The amount should be agreed with your contractor after the scope and access conditions are known; do not assume a national average covers hidden damage or difficult utility routes.

Ways to reduce the cost without losing the island’s purpose

  • Keep the island in its current location when the existing utility routes work.
  • Reduce length or depth to use fewer cabinet boxes and less countertop.
  • Select a simpler cabinet configuration with standard doors and drawers.
  • Use a less expensive countertop material or a straightforward edge.
  • Reuse structurally sound cabinet boxes and replace only fronts, hardware or the top.
  • Install only essential appliances and phase optional equipment.
  • Choose a movable island cart if you need storage or prep surface without fixed utilities.

NerdWallet describes a simple movable kitchen island cart as costing a few hundred dollars. That is a qualitative estimate, not a specific model or retailer price. A cart can be appropriate when you need flexible prep space or storage, but it does not replace integrated cabinetry, plumbing, cooking equipment or fixed electrical service.

Does a kitchen island increase home value?

An island can improve everyday function, storage and circulation, but the material here does not establish a universal return-on-investment percentage or guarantee that a remodel will increase resale value. Value depends on the home’s layout, workmanship, market and whether the island improves rather than obstructs the kitchen. Design the island for safe movement, useful storage and durable installation first; treat any future resale benefit as uncertain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What your contractor’s estimate should include

Before approving a proposal, check that it identifies:

  • Final island dimensions, cabinet materials, finish and hardware
  • Countertop material, measured area, fabrication, cutouts and edge
  • Sink, faucet, disposal and dishwasher specifications, if applicable
  • Electrical circuits, wiring length assumptions, outlets and lighting
  • Gas, plumbing supply, drain and vent work, if applicable
  • Appliance models, installation responsibility and ventilation
  • Demolition, disposal, floor access and finish repairs
  • Labor, trade subcontractors, permits, inspections and cleanup
  • Allowances, exclusions, change-order procedure and payment schedule

Use the $4,800 addition average and $10,000-plus custom-build figure only to understand the broad scale of an island project. The decision that most affects your own remodel is whether utilities stay where they are and whether the proposal captures every component of the finished island.
