Security bollard installation prices range from a few hundred dollars or pounds for a basic fixed post to several thousand for powered or impact-rated systems. The figures available are local examples, not a universal average: the bollard’s purpose and performance, foundation, surface work, site access, and the contractor’s included scope can all change the total. Compare written bids for the same specification and installation work—not just the price per post.

Published installation prices: what the examples show

There is no single installed price that applies across countries or project types. These figures are useful reference points only; they differ in currency, location, tax treatment, security specification, and stated scope.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Example Published price What the figure covers or means
Standard fixed steel-pipe bollard, commercial parking lot in Oregon, US (2026 contractor example) $400–$900 installed per bollard A local contractor example for a standard fixed post. It is not a crash-rated system price or a national average.
Crash-rated K12/M50 installation at a federal facility, US (same contractor’s 2026 example) $8,000–$20,000 or more per bollard A higher-security installation example. The setting and specification differ from the Oregon parking-lot example, so the two figures are not like-for-like.
Steel bollard set in concrete, UK (2026 indicative supplier estimate) £180–£400 total, excluding VAT Supply £80–£200 plus installation labor £100–£200.
Single automatic rising bollard, UK (2026 indicative supplier estimate) £1,300–£4,500 total, excluding VAT Supply £800–£3,000 plus installation labor £500–£1,500.
IWA 14-1 certified concrete-in bollard, UK (2026 indicative supplier estimate) £800–£2,600 total, excluding VAT Supply £500–£2,000 plus installation labor £300–£600.
Typical bollard installation in Southern California, US (2026 concrete-contractor estimate) $900–$3,000 per bollard A local typical range; specification and site conditions affect where a project lands within it.

These are published examples, not independently established market statistics. No representative national or global average is established by these figures. Do not combine US and UK amounts into one range, treat the UK estimates as including VAT, or assume that every source includes the same labor, materials, or site work. Ask each bidder to state the location, currency, tax treatment, and inclusions behind its number.

How to read the price examples

Start by separating a product price from an installed price. The UK examples explicitly break out supply and installation labor, but the Oregon example is stated as installed and the Southern California figure is a local typical range. Those descriptions do not establish that each quote includes identical excavation, foundation, restoration, traffic control, or other work. Even two numbers labeled “installed” may have different assumptions, so use the line-item scope—not the label—to decide whether they can be compared.

The gap between the Oregon fixed-post example and the federal-facility K12/M50 example is not a simple premium for a particular brand or material. It reflects different applications and security specifications, and the examples are not a controlled comparison. Similarly, the UK automatic and certified concrete-in prices illustrate different product types within one country and stated VAT treatment, but they do not establish that one category is a direct substitute for another. Treat each amount as a prompt for a local quote, not as a budget guarantee.

Why the type of bollard changes the price

Fixed posts

A fixed bollard remains in place and is often used to define or protect an area. A standard fixed steel-pipe post is not automatically crash-rated: a general-purpose post and a tested vehicle-impact system do different jobs. If the purpose is to stop a vehicle, specify the required performance rather than asking for a generic “security bollard.”

Removable posts

A removable bollard can allow authorized vehicles through when needed. Its installation may include a receiving socket and a locking arrangement, in addition to the post and foundation work. The available price examples do not give a separate installed figure for this type, so obtain a site-specific, itemized quote rather than inferring a price from a fixed-post estimate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a basic access-control situation, a lockable removable driveway bollard or fold-down surface post may be a relevant product category to investigate. That is not a substitute for a crash-rated system: ordinary consumer driveway products should not be assumed to provide vehicle-impact protection. Ask what the product is designed to do, and keep the specification tied to the actual job.

Automatic rising bollards

A powered rising bollard adds a mechanism to raise and lower the post. Depending on the system and project, the quote may also need to cover electrical work, controls, access control, and commissioning. The UK supplier’s 2026 indicative estimate of £1,300–£4,500 for one automatic rising bollard, excluding VAT, separates supply (£800–£3,000) from installation labor (£500–£1,500); it is a local illustration, not a price for every powered system.

When comparing powered options, check whether the figures include only the bollard and labor or also the electrical and control work needed for the intended operation. A quote that excludes those elements may look lower than one that includes them, without representing a less expensive complete installation. Request separate line items or clearly stated exclusions so the eventual total is understandable.

Impact-rated systems

A bollard specified for vehicle-impact protection is a system, not simply a stronger-looking post. Performance claims need to match a documented test or certification and the installation details for that system. In the examples available, the US contractor’s $8,000–$20,000-or-more figure is for a K12/M50 installation at a federal facility, while the UK supplier’s £800–£2,600 figure is for an IWA 14-1 certified concrete-in bollard, excluding VAT. Different locations and specifications mean these amounts should not be compared as equivalent ratings or as direct substitutes.

For a rated option, ask for the specific make and model, the performance evidence, and the foundation and backfill details tied to that evidence. A rating should not be treated as a general property of every bollard in a product family or as something guaranteed by appearance. The complete installed system and its specified construction matter.

What affects the installed price

Required protection and documented performance

Start with the threat the installation must address. A post intended to guide parking or discourage casual access is not the same specification as a system intended to resist a vehicle impact. Higher documented impact performance can mean more substantial equipment and a more demanding foundation, increasing both product and civil-work costs. Require the make and model, the relevant rating or test evidence, and the installation design that goes with it; do not accept an unsupported crash-rating claim.

This first decision affects every later comparison. A low-cost post may be suitable for defining an area or controlling routine access, while an impact-protection requirement calls for a documented system matched to the threat. Comparing the prices before agreeing on that requirement risks treating two different jobs as competing bids.

Foundation, excavation, and reinstatement

Installation can involve excavation, concrete, reinforcement or anchorage, and disposal of removed material. Cutting or core-drilling an existing slab and restoring asphalt, paving, or other finishes may add work as well. The required foundation depth and construction depend on the selected system and the site; a generic footing detail should not be assumed adequate for every bollard, especially a rated system.

The New York State Department of Transportation’s bollard specification says contractors must strictly follow the manufacturer’s written installation instructions unless the contract documents give different instructions that specifically address the bollards. That matters to cost as well as performance: foundation and backfill requirements may be part of what makes a tested system achieve its stated rating.

Ask the contractor to describe the actual civil work rather than compressing it into a vague “installation” charge. The scope should make clear whether excavation, concrete, reinforcement or anchorage, cutting, removal, disposal, and reinstatement are included. For a tested system, check that the proposed foundation and backfill match the manufacturer’s certified installation details; changing those details can undermine the performance the product is meant to provide.

Surface and subsurface conditions

The existing surface may need to be cut, drilled, removed, or repaired. Underground utilities, soil conditions, and obstructions can affect excavation, equipment, labor, and the foundation design. A Southern California concrete contractor identifies the existing surface and underground utilities among the variables in its 2026 local estimate. Have site conditions assessed before treating an early per-unit figure as a firm price.

Make utility and ground assumptions visible in the proposal. Ask how the contractor has accounted for locating or working around utilities and what happens to the price if a conflict or unexpected condition is encountered. The point is not to assume that every site will require redesign; it is to distinguish the work included in the bid from work that might be added after excavation begins.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Access, traffic, and project logistics

Access for workers and equipment, the number and spacing of posts, and whether the area remains active during installation can affect the total. Work in a vehicle or pedestrian area may need traffic control or phased work; the project may also include mobilization, transport, and disposal. Public installation schedules illustrate why inclusions matter: a City of Tshwane 2025/26 tender lists equipment, materials, labor, excavation and backfilling, surplus-soil removal, and transport or collection within specified installation rates. A low headline unit price may not include all comparable tasks.

Ask whether the total assumes a single mobilization or a particular sequence of work, and whether the installation can proceed with the area accessible to workers and equipment. If the site must stay active, confirm what traffic control, pedestrian access arrangements, or phasing are included. These are project-scope questions, not fixed add-ons with one universal price; the quote should state the assumptions used for the particular site.

Electrical and access-control scope

For an automatic unit, ask whether the quote includes the required electrical supply, controls, access-control interface, and commissioning—or only the bollard and installation labor. These items are project-specific; the published UK figure splits supply and labor but does not establish a universal scope for electrical or control work.

Finish and appearance

Covers, decorative finishes, and lighting can add cost beyond the bollard’s protective function. Ask for optional finishes as separate line items so that an aesthetic upgrade does not obscure the cost of the core system.

Quantity and spacing

Give each bidder the same number of bollards and a marked layout showing their proposed locations and spacing. A total project price can include common work such as mobilization and transport as well as work repeated at each location; therefore, a simple per-unit division may not explain the assumptions behind a bid. The public tender examples also show that some installation rates bundle equipment, labor, excavation, backfilling, removal, or transport. Ask bidders to explain whether their rate is per bollard, for the whole project, or a mix of both.

How to compare contractor quotes

Request a written scope from every bidder. The goal is to compare the same performance level and the same work, with exclusions visible. The New York State DOT specification’s per-unit bid scope includes saw cutting, excavation, disposal, labor, materials, and equipment; it also requires adherence to manufacturer instructions unless the contract documents specify otherwise. That is a useful reminder to check what a “per bollard” rate actually contains.

  1. Define the job. State what the bollards need to control or protect, how many are needed, and where they will go. If impact protection is required, identify the requested performance and ask for the supporting test or certification evidence.
  2. Identify the product. Require the make and model or a sufficiently precise performance specification. Distinguish fixed, removable, and automatic units rather than comparing quotes for different operating types.
  3. Request the foundation and installation design. Ask bidders to identify excavation, concrete, reinforcement or anchorage, and any system-specific foundation or backfill requirements. The proposed installation should match the manufacturer’s written details and any applicable contract requirements.
  4. List surface and restoration work. Ask whether cutting or core drilling, removal of existing material, disposal, and repair of the slab, asphalt, or paving are included.
  5. Clarify site and utility assumptions. Ask how the price handles underground utilities, soil conditions, restricted access, and equipment needs. Identify work that would be treated as an extra if an obstruction or conflict is found.
  6. Make logistics explicit. Confirm the number and spacing assumed, mobilization, transport, traffic control, pedestrian access, phasing, and removal of surplus soil or other waste.
  7. For powered systems, itemize the controls. Separate the bollard, electrical work, access-control components, and commissioning so that an apparent price difference is not simply a difference in included scope.
  8. Separate optional finish and ongoing terms. Request appearance options as separate prices, and record the warranty and any maintenance terms included in the offer.
  9. Compare totals on the same basis. Put supply, labor, civil work, taxes, exclusions, and any options beside each other. Do not rank bidders by a single per-unit amount until those items and the performance specification match.

A practical bid-comparison checklist

A useful comparison sheet can have one column per bidder and rows for product and rating; fixed, removable, or automatic operation; quantity and spacing; supply; labor; excavation and foundation; surface cutting and repair; disposal; utility assumptions; traffic control and access; electrical and controls; tax; optional finish; warranty; maintenance; and exclusions. The aim is not to force every contractor into an identical estimating format. It is to reveal whether one proposal has omitted an item that another has included.

Keep the quoted performance and scope beside the price. For example, a lower number is not a meaningful saving if it prices a standard parking-control post while another bidder has priced a tested impact-protection system. Likewise, a quote for an automatic bollard that omits electrical or access-control work is not directly comparable to a complete proposal. Ask for clarification or a revised price on the same basis before selecting a bid.

Installation and performance: why the details matter

For hostile-vehicle mitigation or another impact-protection application, the selected system must be matched to the threat and installed to the design associated with its tested performance. The UK supplier guide describes IWA 14-1 and notes that a tested product achieves its rated performance only when installed to the manufacturer’s certified details, including foundation and backfill requirements. The New York State DOT specification likewise directs adherence to written manufacturer installation instructions unless contract documents provide specific alternatives.

That is why a rated bollard should be treated as a specialist design and installation project, not as a consumer-product substitution. A product label alone does not establish that an installation will deliver the stated performance if the foundation or other certified details are changed. Confirm the applicable standard, system documentation, site conditions, and installation responsibilities before award.

Common pricing mistakes to avoid

  • Comparing unlike systems. A standard fixed parking-lot post, an automatic rising bollard, and a certified impact-protection system are different scopes and should not share one assumed price.
  • Assuming an installed price includes everything. Verify whether excavation, foundation work, surface repair, disposal, traffic control, electrical work, and taxes are included.
  • Using a foreign or local estimate as a universal benchmark. The available examples are geographically specific and differ in tax treatment and scope. Obtain current bids for the actual location.
  • Choosing a generic post for a rated-protection need. Require evidence for the exact performance claim and installation details; appearance is not proof of impact resistance.
  • Ignoring the site until after quoting. Surface construction, buried utilities, access, and traffic conditions can change the work needed. Make assumptions and exclusions explicit before comparing totals.
  • Forgetting tax and quote boundaries. The UK estimates are explicitly excluding VAT, while the US examples are not directly comparable with them. Confirm tax treatment and whether the proposal covers supply only, labor, or a defined installed scope.
  • Choosing a product by its label alone. For impact protection, the installation design is part of the tested system. Confirm the foundation and backfill details, not just the product name or stated rating.

How to get a useful project estimate

For an initial estimate, give contractors the site location, a plan or marked-up photo showing proposed locations and spacing, the number of bollards, and the required operating type. State whether the goal is access control, physical protection, or vehicle-impact mitigation. For a rated system, include the required performance documentation or ask the contractor to identify the compliant system and installation design being priced.

Ask for an itemized proposal that distinguishes the bollard supply from labor, excavation, foundation, cutting and reinstatement, disposal, traffic control, electrical or access-control work, and tax. Request explicit assumptions about utilities, access, and site conditions, along with warranty and maintenance terms. A site inspection may be needed to confirm the existing surface and subsurface conditions before a firm quote can account for the work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are seeking a product for basic access control rather than impact mitigation, describe that limitation clearly and compare options designed for that use. For a security installation that requires documented vehicle-impact performance, seek a regional security installer, manufacturer, or civil contractor able to provide a site-specific proposal and the applicable system documentation. No generic consumer post should be presented as crash protection without evidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to install a security bollard?

It depends on the type, performance requirement, location, site conditions, and what the contractor includes. Published examples include $400–$900 installed for a standard fixed steel-pipe post in an Oregon parking lot, $900–$3,000 in a Southern California local estimate, and £180–£400 excluding VAT for a UK steel bollard set in concrete. These are local examples, not a universal average.

Why can crash-rated bollards cost much more than standard posts?

Impact-protection systems require documented performance and an installation design matched to the system, including its foundation and backfill requirements. A US contractor’s 2026 example for a K12/M50 installation at a federal facility is $8,000–$20,000 or more per bollard; that is a different setting and specification from a basic parking-lot post.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are the UK prices inclusive of VAT?

No. The cited UK indicative prices are stated excluding VAT. Check each local quote for tax treatment as well as what is included for supply, labor, and site work.

What should an installation quote include?

Ask for the product and performance specification, quantity and spacing, supply and labor, excavation and foundation, cutting and surface restoration, disposal, utility assumptions, traffic control, and any electrical or access-control work for automatic units. Confirm taxes, exclusions, warranty, and maintenance terms, too.

Does a removable driveway bollard provide crash protection?

Not necessarily. A removable or fold-down post may suit basic access control, but ordinary consumer driveway products should not be assumed to provide vehicle-impact protection. For that purpose, require documented performance evidence and the matching installation design.

Why does the foundation matter for a rated bollard?

A tested system achieves its stated performance only when installed to the applicable manufacturer’s certified details, including foundation and backfill requirements. The New York State DOT specification also directs contractors to follow written manufacturer installation instructions unless the contract documents specifically say otherwise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Security bollard installation has no universal price: a basic fixed post, an automatic unit, and an impact-rated system are different jobs. Use local published figures only as reference points, then compare itemized bids for the same product performance, foundation, site work, taxes, and included services. For a rated system, verify both the performance evidence and the installation details tied to it.
