How Much Can a Home Battery Save by Storing Surplus Solar Electricity?

A home battery's savings depend on the solar surplus it can store, the grid electricity it later replaces, the export credit forgone and the installed cost. See how to estimate the value and interpret Australian Government examples.

A home battery saves money when it stores solar electricity that would otherwise be exported or wasted, then supplies the house when it would otherwise draw—and pay for—grid power. The saving is not the full retail price of the electricity used later: the household also gives up the export credit it could have earned, and some energy is lost in charging and discharging.

There is no universal annual saving. The result depends on the home’s solar surplus, when electricity is used, import and export rates, battery performance, and installed cost. An Australian Government example estimates A$2,100 a year in savings for a combined 6.6 kW solar-and-battery system costing A$22,000, with about 10.5 years’ simple payback. That is an illustrative whole-system case, not a battery-only saving or a promise of what another home will save.

Where the saving comes from

A battery shifts some solar generation from the hours when it is produced to the hours when the home needs it. Without storage, surplus electricity may be exported for a feed-in credit; later, when solar production is low, the household buys electricity from the grid. With a battery, some of that surplus can be held and used on site instead.

The financial gain is the value of grid purchases avoided, less the export credit forfeited on the electricity sent into the battery, and less the effect of energy lost during conversion and storage. A battery does not create additional solar energy or guarantee that the household will avoid all grid imports. It can only shift energy that the solar system generated in excess of immediate household use, within the battery’s operating limits.

This distinction matters when reading a quote or a bill. Export credits show what the utility paid for energy sent out; they do not show the value of solar electricity the home consumed directly or later used from a battery. A useful comparison needs to account for both imports and exports, as well as self-consumption.

How to estimate a home’s battery savings

A practical estimate compares the cost of the grid energy the battery can replace with the credit the household would have earned by exporting the solar energy used to charge it. The calculation must use energy delivered from the battery, not just its rated capacity: charging and discharging losses mean the delivered amount is lower than the amount put in.

For a simplified single-rate example, if a battery takes in C kWh of solar energy, delivers a share η after losses, and that delivered energy displaces grid electricity priced at P per kWh, while the foregone export credit is F per kWh, the approximate value of that energy shift is (η × C × P) − (C × F). This is a calculation framework, not a forecast: real tariffs, usage, battery operation and energy flows vary over time.

Gather the household inputs

  • Solar surplus: how much generation remains after daytime household use, and when it occurs. A large battery has limited value if the solar system rarely produces enough surplus to charge it.
  • Later electricity demand: how much power the household uses after solar output falls, and whether a battery can serve that demand at the times it is needed.
  • Import tariff: the price paid for grid electricity, including time-of-use differences if the plan charges more during some periods.
  • Export tariff: the credit received for solar electricity sent to the grid. This is the opportunity cost of charging the battery with energy that could otherwise have been exported.
  • Battery performance: usable capacity, power output, round-trip efficiency and any assumed degradation over time. Rated capacity alone does not say how much energy will be available for household use.
  • Installed cost and warranty: the price for the proposed configuration, any confirmed incentive, and the period and conditions covered by the warranty.

Account for the tariff and operating pattern

Storing solar is generally more financially attractive when the battery replaces high-priced grid electricity and the alternative export credit is low. A time-of-use tariff may increase the value of battery discharge if it is used during expensive periods. Conversely, a generous export credit raises the value of sending solar to the grid and makes the opportunity cost of storing that energy higher.

Other arrangements can alter the result. Demand charges, payments for participation in a virtual power plant, or solar generation that would otherwise be curtailed may affect household economics. Their value depends on the particular tariff, program and system, so they should be included only when a quote or plan clearly explains the applicable terms.

Turn the estimate into a payback check

Once expected annual bill savings have been estimated, compare them with the battery’s incremental installed cost—not automatically the cost of an entire solar-and-battery project. A simple payback calculation divides that relevant upfront cost by estimated annual savings. It is a rough comparison, not a guarantee of when a household will break even: it does not by itself account for changes in electricity prices, usage, incentives, battery performance or other costs over time.

What the published Australian figures do—and do not—show

The Australian Government’s Solar Consumer Guide provides two illustrative household cases. They show that solar-only and combined solar-and-battery systems can have different costs and savings, but they do not isolate a battery’s contribution. The government cautions: “A battery will not pay back its upfront cost as fast as a solar-only system and may not even pay itself off within its lifetime.” These figures are examples in an Australian consumer guide, not typical results or forecasts for households elsewhere.

Illustrative case System and cost Estimated annual savings Simple payback What can be concluded
Sangita’s combined system 6.6 kW rooftop solar plus battery; A$22,000 A$2,100 About 10.5 years Whole-system example. The guide says the battery may not be paid off before its 10-year warranty expires; it does not state battery-only savings.
Solar-only comparison Solar system; A$7,000 A$1,600 About 4.4 years Solar-only example. It is not a like-for-like estimate of adding a battery to the combined system.

The A$500 difference between the annual savings in those examples is not a clean estimate of battery savings. The configurations and costs differ, and the guide does not isolate how much of the combined system’s result comes from the battery. Likewise, dividing the combined system’s A$22,000 cost by A$2,100 gives the approximate simple payback shown, but does not establish the battery’s standalone payback.

A separate regulator figure is useful for understanding modelling, not for predicting a particular product’s performance. In its 2025 residential electricity price trends methodology, the Australian Energy Market Commission used a modelled 15 kWh battery capacity, 85% round-trip efficiency, 1.8% annual degradation and an 85% rated-capacity charge/discharge limit. These are assumptions in a regulatory model, not guaranteed specifications for all batteries or measured results from an individual household.

When a battery is a better fit—and when it may not be

Conditions that can improve the economics

  • The home regularly has surplus solar after daytime use and has demand later when the battery can discharge.
  • Grid imports that can be displaced are expensive relative to the export credit the household would give up.
  • The proposed size fits the home’s solar output, household use and inverter capacity, so the system can charge and discharge usefully rather than being oversized for available energy.
  • The installed price, after any incentive the household is confirmed to qualify for, is reasonable relative to conservative savings estimates.

Conditions that can weaken the economics

  • There is little regular solar surplus to store, or the household uses most solar generation as it is produced.
  • Export compensation is high relative to the price of electricity the battery would replace.
  • The battery is larger than the available surplus or the household’s later demand can use effectively.
  • The savings estimate relies on a tariff, incentive, operating mode or payment arrangement that is uncertain or not documented in the quote.

These checks are especially relevant when a battery is being considered as part of a construction or renovation project. The design conversation should connect the proposed storage size to the planned solar system, inverter capacity and expected household load, rather than treating battery capacity as a standalone target.

How to compare battery proposals

Compare two or more proposals using the same household assumptions. A larger battery is not automatically a better investment: if it cannot be charged with surplus solar or its energy is not used later, extra capacity may not deliver extra savings. The Australian Government’s program guidance says sizing should take account of household use, solar output and inverter capacity.

Compare What to verify
Usable capacity and power output How much energy can actually be charged and discharged, and how much power the system can supply at one time.
Solar surplus and evening load What share of the home’s surplus the battery is expected to capture, and what household demand it is expected to serve later.
Efficiency and degradation The efficiency and degradation assumptions used in the savings estimate, and whether they are product specifications or modelling assumptions.
Tariffs The import prices used, including time-of-use periods, and the export credit forgone when solar is stored.
Installed price and incentive The full quoted installed cost, any confirmed discount or support, and the amount due from the household.
Warranty and configuration Warranty duration and conditions, along with the proposed operating and backup configuration relevant to the quote.
Payback sensitivity Estimated payback under both conservative and favorable assumptions, with the assumptions shown rather than hidden in a single headline figure.

Request more than one quote and ask each installer to state the assumed usage, solar generation, export rate, import tariff, battery operating mode, expected annual savings, installed price, incentive, warranty and payback calculation. A side-by-side comparison is only useful if the proposals use comparable inputs or clearly disclose where those inputs differ.

Check the Australian incentive and location limits

The Australian Government says the Cheaper Home Batteries Program began on 1 July 2025. Its current battery information describes changes effective 1 May 2026 and support of around 30% for a range of system sizes. This is Australia-specific and time-sensitive: check current eligibility and the discount applying to the quoted system before including it in a payback calculation. Do not assume that a program discount is available to every household or configuration.

The worked costs and savings above are Australian examples, and the regulator’s modelling assumptions refer to the Australian residential electricity market. The underlying energy-shifting mechanism applies more broadly, but the Australian costs, tariffs, incentive and payback cannot be transferred directly to another country. A household elsewhere needs local import prices, export compensation, an installed battery quote, system sizing and applicable incentives.

Verify the result after installation

Use the battery or solar monitoring system to review generation, stored energy, imports from the grid, exports and household self-consumption. These flows show whether the battery is being charged from solar and whether its discharge is replacing grid use as expected. A bill’s export credit alone will not reveal the avoided cost of solar electricity consumed directly or from storage.

Compare bills and plan details over representative seasons, since weather and electricity prices can change. If observed imports, exports or self-consumption differ materially from the estimate, check whether the assumed tariff and battery operating mode match the actual plan and system settings before judging annual savings from a short period of data.
