The result was a large outdoor focal point mounted on a garden shed—not a ready-made prop or a documented parts-for-parts kit.
How the display created its effect
The central image appeared on a Gakken WorldEye, a specialty hemispherical display. A Raspberry Pi sent the animated eye to it over HDMI. Around the display, thin-wire LED strands produced the fire effect: one Arduino development board controlled those strands, while a second controlled accent LEDs. A 3D-printed frame looped and supported the wires.
For the surrounding structure, Christian used corbels—architectural supports available at hardware stores—and a moulding accent to build a tower-like surround. The assembly sat on a garden shed, with red floodlights adding atmosphere. The effect depended on the whole composition: the eye, the lighted strands and the dark, tower-shaped setting.
What you would need to adapt the idea
The original Hackster.io feature describes the project, but it does not give a complete build tutorial or detailed bill of materials. It does not establish exact board models, LED specifications, wiring, dimensions or source code for the decoration. Treat these as the documented build categories, not a verified shopping list.
#1 Best Overall
- Features a fiery red eye that glows through a lithophane panel, evoking the presence of a legendary dark force from classic fantasy tales.
- The eye remains invisible in daylight, only revealing its watchful gaze when the room darkens and the light switches on.
- Encased in a golden ring-shaped housing etched with rune-like inscriptions—subtly reminiscent of a powerful artifact from fantasy legend.
- Ideal for Halloween, birthdays, or holidays. A unique piece for fans of mythical realms, dark towers, and iconic villains.
- Animated-eye display: a Raspberry Pi and a screen or projector with HDMI input. The original used a Gakken WorldEye for its distinctive hemispherical presentation; its current retail availability has not been verified.
- Fire and accent lighting: LED strands and Arduino development boards. The feature identifies their roles but not specifications sufficient to select exact replacements.
- Physical support and surround: a frame to hold the LED wires, plus construction details such as corbels and moulding to create a tower-like silhouette.
- Outdoor setting: a suitable mounting location and lighting to shape the scene. The original display was placed on a garden shed and used red floodlights.
Choose a display that fits your build
A conventional HDMI display or projector is the more straightforward adaptation. Adafruit’s animated-eye guide explains that Raspberry Pi video can feed an HDMI monitor or projector, including the Gakken WorldEye. That route can show the animation, but it does not promise the original’s hemispherical, floating-eye appearance.
The Animated Snake Eyes Bonnet is not required for HDMI video output. According to Adafruit’s guide, it is relevant if you want analog inputs such as joystick or light-sensor controls. That distinction can help keep a basic display build simpler: use HDMI for the image, and add input hardware only if you want interactive controls.

Scale the construction to the setting
The original was an outdoor shed-scale installation. A smaller indoor version could use a tabletop screen and a compact frame, while a yard display needs a stable support and a layout that reads clearly from a distance. These are adaptation choices, not dimensions or safety specifications reported for Christian’s build; plan the structure and electrical setup for your own display location.
For a construction-minded approach, treat the tower surround and wire-support frame as separate jobs. The surround supplies the recognizable silhouette; the frame holds the LED strands in position around the display. Keeping those functions distinct makes it easier to alter the tower’s size or shape without changing how the eye is supported.
