The system is intended to reduce the building’s reliance on grid power—not to make the skyscraper fully solar-powered or energy independent.
What building is the project?
The project is The Residences at 1428 Brickell, a residential tower planned for Brickell Avenue in Miami. Developer Ytech says Arquitectonica designed its exterior, whose sculpted form draws inspiration from wind; that description reflects the project’s own design account. Ytech’s project description identifies it as a 70-story tower.
How does the facade generate electricity?
The planned system integrates photovoltaic glass into the building envelope, especially the west-facing glazing. Photovoltaic material converts sunlight into electricity; placing it in facade glazing lets the building use part of its exterior surface for generation rather than relying only on conventional rooftop panels. The project describes this installation as a “solar backbone” intended to reduce grid-based energy use.
The project site reports that 20,000 square feet (1,858 square metres) of photovoltaic glass is capable of producing 175,000 kilowatt-hours per year for the building. That is a developer-reported design capability, not measured output from an operating tower. The project’s technical description is available in its report on the solar backbone.

Does “powered by the sun” mean the tower runs entirely on solar energy?
No. The project describes solar generation as a way to offset some electricity otherwise drawn from the grid. The published material does not state the tower’s total annual electricity demand, so it is not possible to calculate what share the photovoltaic glass would provide. It also does not establish net-zero operation or energy independence.
The project site’s 2023 page, republishing Modern Luxury Miami, called the development the “first-ever high-rise residential tower partially powered by the sun.” That is a promotional project-side claim, not an independently established ranking. The same page gives a conflicting figure of “up to 170 megawatts of clean energy per year.” Megawatts measure power, while annual energy is ordinarily expressed in units such as kilowatt-hours; the wording and number do not align with the later 175,000-kWh-per-year report. The figures should not be silently converted or treated as consistent. The earlier project page contains that claim.

What is known about the design and construction schedule?
Ytech describes the tower’s exterior as sculpted and fluid, with a green-integrated base. Patricia Viel, CEO of ACPV Architects, characterized the design this way: “The Residences at 1428 Brickell’s architecture is a sculptural expression of fluidity, with shape playing a major role in its makeup.” This is the architect’s description, rather than an independent assessment of the building’s performance.
The project site reported that construction began in November 2024 and that completion was slated for 2028. Those are reported schedule dates and may change; the cited material does not establish a current construction milestone.

What will show whether the solar system delivers as planned?
The published figure describes intended capacity, not verified performance. Once the building is operating, the most useful evidence would be actual annual electricity generated by the facade, compared with the building’s total electricity demand over the same period. No post-completion generation data or independent performance study is established in the cited project material.
